Any recommendations for small businesses
-
I'm currently helping a bunch of small business owners with using internet marketing SEO etc. A couple of them are just starting out and cant afford to pay for someone to build the site for them etc.
If someone wants to use one of these Free / cheap websites (live vistaprint, 123 reg, Moonfruit, etc), which one would you recommend? Are any any better and giving the foundations to build some decent rankings on?I
Do the ones where you drag and drop to build the site normally create a flash site?
Has anyone done a study on which ones work best?
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

If they have a little bit more to spend, I'd recommend EGOL's suggestion above, and then to look at something like page.ly for hosting. The basic WP hosting there is about $25 a month, and they take care of all of the upgrades for you. I worked with it once a couple of years ago, and it was the easiest WP install I've ever done.

I have not looked at vistaprint or moonfruit but those types of systems are generally awful for SEO.
If I knew a person who had a tiny business and needed a website I would point them towards a wordpress site using a template. Then they can focus 100% on the content and easily change or improve the design in the future.
They might need some help getting started, so there could be a small expense and a learning curve - but you will have that with anything.
I would also register a domain and have the wordpress on my own hosting. This cost is very small - probably under $100/year.
In the end you have your website on a platform that is very versatile, functional, well supported, and can easily get experts to improve it when you are ready.

Does Marking a Business as Permanently Closed in GMB Impact Website Rankings?
I recently acquired a business that had a website with great rankings and traffic but also had a few physical locations listed in Google. The physical locations closed and are marked as "Permanently Closed" in Google. The website also expired for several months before I picked it up. The site had amazing rankings and traffic previously but is really struggling to regain rankings now. I'm concerned that the site is not performing well due to the business marked as "permanently closed" in GMB. I'm unable to do anything about that because the website doesn't have any physical locations. Any tips on what to do here?

JSON-LD meta data: Do you have any rules/recommendations for using BlogPosting vs Article?
Dear Moz Community. I'm looking at moving from in-line Microdata in the HTML to JSON-LD on the web pages that I manage. Seems a far simpler solution having all the meta data in one place - especially for trouble shooting! With this in mind I've started to change the page templates on my personal site before I tackle the ones for my eCommerce site. I've made a start, and I'm still working on the templates producing some default values (like if a page doesn't have an associated image) but have been wondering if any of you have any rules/recommendations for using BlogPosting vs Article? I'd call this type of page an Article:

SEO implications when changing the business function however using the same domain name
Hi Everyone, Request some advice on the following situation please: If a client wishes to start a new business (advertising agency) using a domain name that they previously used for a completely different business function (selling hats & t-shirts) Is there anything you can do to "clean" the domain so that the previous indexing of the domain does not effect the new business and give the client a fresh start. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards and thanks.

Business/Personal Blog Duplicate Content
Quick Question. I am in the process of launching a new website for my IT business which will include a blog. I also want to start up my personal blog again. I want to publish some blog posts to both my business and personal blogs but I don't want to have any duplicate content issues. I am not concerned with building the SERPs of my personal blog but I am very focused on the business blog/site. I am looking for some ideas of how I can publish content to both sites without getting hurt by duplicate content. Again, I am not concerned with building up the placement of my personal site but I do want to have a strong personal site that helps build my name. Any help on this would be great. Thanks!

Competiting In the Small Business SEO Market
I deal with primarily small businesses in the construction and maintenance industries and I'm looking for some advice. Traditionally in these categories you find absolutely awful websites with the below attributes, all ranking 1-5 in the SERPs. Weak/Limited content No blog Awful title tags Minimal backlinks Poor on-site optimization Ect. In most cases I am going to assume that these sites have been indexed for the last ten years, and that is why they are retaining such high rankings. My issue is trying to compete with them! So far I have worked to have my client's website submitted to and accepted by all of their competitor's backlinking site (which didn't take as long as you might think). I've also listed my client in several of the top paying and free directories (dmoz, joe ant, ect.) and still I see limited results. Lastly and most annoyingly my clients website, according to SEOmoz is currently leading the domain authority race in every category. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what is going on.
