404 in google webmaster tool
-
I have redesigned my website with new web address over 6 months ago and in the google webmaster tools it still shows my old urls with a reponse code 404 and still crawls those pages.
How do I make sure they don't appear anymore in the webmaster tool and don't get crawled anymore ?
or should I do a re-direct ?
Thank you,
-
Agree with John's response, but to add two points:
1. You can also set redirects manually via a .htaccess file if using Joomla. The format is very simple:
redirect 301 /oldpage.html /newpage.html
It takes some time, but I'm generally of the opinion that it's worth it when these appear in GWMT.
2. There's a feature in Webmaster Tools now to mark the errors as 'resolved'. That can help clean things up for you. If the errors aren't really resolved, Google states in the help documentation that they will eventually reappear for you to find again.

If you have new pages that are similar to your old pages, the old pages no longer need to exist. Usually this involves putting redirects in your conf file. I've never used Joomla, but I think the conf file would live outside of that (e.g. in Apache).

Your 404's should filter out over time as long as you are not linking to them or listing them in your XML sitemap. It can take quite a while. 301 them if you have proper pages to do so, but if you don't - just let it play out.
Google webmaster's stance on this is that 404's are natural, and they are more of an awareness alert, than a huge issue. If you see a spike make sure it is supposed to be happening.

That is what I thought but how do I redirect those knowing that they don't exist on my joomla website anymore ?

You should do redirects for these pages if you can. The probable reason they keep showing up and getting crawled is because people linked to those pages before you redid your site, and Google is continuing to come across those links. If you 301 redirect them to their new counterparts, people will be getting to the content they're looking for when they click those links, and also the link juice from those links will pass to the new pages, so the new pages should also rank better.

Hide Aggregation from Google?
Google isn't a fan of aggregation, but sometimes it is a good way to fill out content when you cannot cover every news story there is. What I'm wondering is if anyone has continued to do any form of aggregation based on a category and hide that url from Google. Example: example.com/industry-news/ -- is where you'd post aggregation stories but you block robots from crawling that. We wouldn't be doing this for search value just value to our readers. Thoughts?

Mystery 404's
I have a large number of 404's that all have a similar structure: www.kempruge.com/example/kemprugelaw. kemprugelaw keeps getting stuck on the end of url's. While I created www.kempruge.com/example/ I never created the www.kempruge.com/example/kemprugelaw page or edited permalinks to have kemprugelaw at the end of the url. Any idea how this happens? And what I can do to make it stop? Thanks, Ruben

Bing Webmaster Tools failed to reach sitemap any suggestions?
My sitemap has been submitted to Bing webmaster tools well over a year ago and I have never had any problems. Starting last week it showed failed, for some reason it can't reach it. I have resubmitted several times and it fails every time. I can go to the url with no problems, and Google Webmaster Tools does not have any problems. We have made no changes in over a year to how the sitemap is made and submitted. Anyone have any ideas?

Multiple Authors Google + Authorship
Hello, I took a look through past questions but can't seem to find a definitive answer on setting up Google + Authorship credit (for multiple authors) using a Wordpress blog. Has anyone had experience setting this up? Or could you recommend solid reading/research? I took a look at a couple of Wordpress plug in's but just found them very confusing (so did our IT contact who will ultimately be setting up code for this.) Any direction or advice is appreciated.

Am I buying links according to Google?
I have the opportunity to sponsor a variety of sections in a variety of .edu sites. Really appealing since they will both provide high quality traffic as well as to help our rankings... (maybe 🙂 )... Anyway this opportunity involves a monetary exchange, no different than advertising in Adwords and/or buying a display ad with the NYT. The links will be both text and banner... With follow links. My questions to you guys are: Is this practice penalize? And will display ads pass link juice also? Thanks for the help...

Managing 404 errors
What is the best way to manage 404 errors for pages that are no longer on the server. For example, client deletes old site from server and replaces it with new site. Webmaster tools is reporting 100 + 404 errors form the old site. I've blocked the 404 pages with robot.text. Requested removal in google webmaster tools. And created a custom 404 page - http://www.tvsphoto.com/missingurlexample Is there anything else I can do?
