Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain

We have a product that when started was under the domain appnowgo.com. We've since changed the name and the domain is now knackhq.com. The latter domain doesn't rank nearly as well as the former for many of the keywords we are targeting. For example... "online database builder" and "web app builder" are two of those keywords. Obviously having app in the domain is not a bad thing but it is our old name.
The question is, should we 301 the appnowgo.com domain to knackhq.com? Or should we use that better rank and just link users to knackhq.com from the appnowgo.com site until we can increase our ranking for knackhq.com? We don't plan to update the content on appnowgo.com anymore and we obviously don't want to drop off rank if at all possible.

Thanks, that most recent answer helped and confirmed our suspicions. There is in fact a different website for each domain. We will leave the old site in place for the time being and just link folks to the new one from there. Thanks again and sorry about any confusion.

Ok, in a way you are saying you have two different website one is the old one and one is the new one… or both domains open up a single website? If both websites are different then I would advise you to play safe and do not redirect instantly because redirection can cause a dip in conversions…
In that case you should focus on building links for new domain and rank it on keywords where your old keywords are located and then redirect if you want…
If this is two domains open up one website only, then isn’t it redirect already?

Sorry for any confusion. The new domain (knackhq.com) is the one that doesn't rank as well. The old one (appnowgo.com) does rank pretty well for many of our keywords. This is why we are still getting 60%+ of our converts through that site. So, while I know we will have to 301 that domain eventually, we are apprehensive about doing it now if we stand to loose a large amount of that convertible traffic. We are still focusing efforts on the knackhq.com domain but just want to know if we should wait until that domain ranks better before redirecting the old domain, or just switch now.

Now this is confusing again... you said your old domain is not ranking or any phrases....if this is the case then redirecting 301 to new domain is the option and you will not see any dip in traffic or conversions...
but if you are saying that your old domain is ranking then the strategy will be different.

We are getting about 60% of our converted traffic by way of the old domain. How much dropoff should we expect when we do the redirect. I'm assuming that all of the result pages for the old domain will just go away instead of adapt to the new domain, right?

Check the back link profile of your Old domain at step one if it is fine and no junk link is there in the link profile... then go ahead and redirect it 301 to the new URL... It’s always good to get link juice that you are wasting anyways...
But if there is a lot of junk in the link profile of the old URL i will consider dropping that and go for the new URL as a standalone property...
In both the cases your future link building and SEO efforts should be on the new domain.

Hi, I use cloudflare free SSL option. All is fine except it wont work with windows XP . How do you think is it ok in case of old OS/Browser redirect visitors to other domain or subdomain? 301 redirect chains
Hi everyone, I've had my site for a while now and have changed the structure a number of times. I'm confident my 301's work well and am not concerned about dead ends on my site. My question is, is there a way to find 301 redirect chains? i.e. can I export my link data from webmaster tools and run it through some software that tells me how many steps my 301's are taking to get to the final page? I don't know for sure that there are long 301 chains in my link structure, but I have a suspicion and it's very hard to check by going through them manually. Thanks in advance Will

URL redirecting domains
Hi Is there anything wrong/dangerous forwarding a clutch of domains to a sub page (landing page) on a different domain ? Say Brand X buys Brand Z and wants to close down Brand Z site but have Brand Z domain fwd to a landing page (explaining the company acquisition) on Brand X site. In addition Brand Z had a few related but unused domains forwarding to Brand Z doman & now also wants those fwd'd to the new landing page on brand X Since the reasons for doing this forwarding are legitimate company reasons relating to an acquisition i would have thought it should be ok but can anyone think of a reason why could be bad since i remember in the old days peeps used to redirect domains for seo reasons so worried fwd'ing a load of domains could cause some sort of negative flag with big G ? Also do domain redirects transfer the authority/juice from the old site/domain to the new destination page (new landing page on brand x site) similar to how a 301 redirect works ? Many Thanks Dan

301 Redirecting weird URLs with % in them
I've been working on redirecting links reported as 404 in Google webmaster tools. I've stumbled upon 41 URLs that Google is reporting as 404 that include a '%' in the URL, but I don't know how to redirect. What factors matters the most when using a 301 permanent redirect?
Hi SEOmozzers, I have a client that has couple of duplicates but I am debating if i should just kill those pages or use 301 Permanent redirects. I know SEO moz provides 2 important factors to look at which are PA and link root domain. 1.Which one matters the most? or which one should I look at first to make a decision? 2. I have empty pages creating duplicate content with a PA of 14 and 1 linking root domain. my thought is to kill the page by inserting a meta NO INDEX. If you don't agree and think I should 301 to an existing page that needs link juice, let me know. Thank you mozzers 🙂

Hi all, I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with an extermley frustrating problem with 301 redirects in .htaccess. Basically I'm trying to redirect some old pages (from our old website) that stil rank to the new equivilent. 301 Redirect for homepage with language code
In my multilingual Magento store, I want to redirect the hompage URL with an added language code to the base URL. For example, I want to redirect http://www.mysite.com/tw/ to http://www.mysite.com/ which has the exact same content. Using a canonical URL will help with search engines, but I would just rather nip the problem in the butt by not showing http://www.mysite.com/tw/ to visitors in the first place. Problem is that I don't want (can't have) all /tw/ removed from URLs due to Magento limitations, so I just want to know how to redirect this single URL. Since rewrites are on, adding Redirect 301 /tw http://www.88kbbq.com would redirect all URLs with the /tw/ language code to ones without. Not an option. Hope folks can lend a hand here.
