Combining 2 blogs into one. What is quicker, easier and better - rel canonical or an htaccess/ 301?
-
The objective I have is to archive an entire blog (which I no longer have time to keep up) with multiple posts over 4years , into another blog as a a folder. My question: would it be quicker and easier to do a rel canonical, or separately list all pages in htaccess and do a 301 redirect.

Most blogs have some sort of export functionality. I would imagine that should expedite the process for you. As for fixing the internal links... I would take your export file and use something like Notepad++ to find and replace the old URLs.

Is there an easy way to copy all the post page archive /links properly into htaccess for 301? Thanks
-
Thanks eyepaq. I control the domain hosting so pages is only important in relation to time.

301 is all three at once. .htaccess makes it crazy easy to make all your blog posts 301 to their new home.
Canonical is only when you want to keep both URLs. It lets you suggest to Google which duplicate content will will the index race. 301 is always preferable since it removes the old location and points to the new.

Hi,
It's important to know the number of the pages - as for 301 you do have some limits as far as overall numbers per domain.
If the number is irrelevant (small) then 301 is the best solution for sure.
Hope it helps.

To 301 redirect or not to 301 redirect? duplicate content problem www.domain.com and www.domain.com/en/
Hello, If your website is getting flagged for duplicate content from your main domain www.domain.com and your multilingual english domain www.domain.com/en/ is it wise to 301 redirect the english multilingual website to the main site? Please advise. We've recently installed the joomish component to one of our joomla websites in an effort to streamline a spanish translation of the website. The translation was a success and the new spanish webpages were indexed but unfortunately one of the web developers enabled the english part of the component and some english webpages were also indexed under the multilingual english domain www.domain.com/en/ and that flagged us for duplicate content. I added a 301 redirect to redirect all visitors from the www.domain/en/ webpages to the main www.domain.com/ webpages. But is that the proper way of handling this problem? Please advise.

Rel=Canonical, WWW vs non WWW and SEO
Okay so I'm a bit of a loss here. For what ever reason just about every single Wordpress site I has will turn www.mysite.com into mysite.com in the browser bar. I assume this is the rel=canonical tag at work, there are no 301s on my site. When I use the Open Site Explorer and type in www.mysite.com it shows a domain authority of around 40 and a few hundred backlinks... and then I get the message. Oh Hey! It looks like that URL redirects to XXXXXX. Would you like to see data for that URL instead? So if I click to see this data instead I have less than half of that domain authority and about 2 backlinks. *** Does this make a difference SEO wise? Should my non WWW be redirecting to my WWW instead because that's where the domain authority and backlinks are? Why am I getting two different domain authority and backlink counts if they are essentially the same? Or am I wrong and all that link juice and authority passes just the same?
