Re-targeting keywords from homepage to category page
-
My website home page ranks well for a keyword lets call it 'Keyword1'. I'd like to create a new category specific to 'Keyword1' and name it 'Keyword1' so the relevant content and products can sit in there.
How can I ensure that my rankings of my current home page are passed on to this new category page?
Many thanks,
-
The question of an internal link from Home Page to New Page would be more of an aesthetic and existing site architecture issue seeing as you are giving all of the metrics from Home Page to New Page through the redirect.
I do not think that the link on the homepage would 'help' in terms of SEO, but it won't hurt either.
A thought that could use some feedback from the community: Would it be better to 301 redirect Home Page to New Page in this example and build a new homepage that you could then use for branding purposes?
I ask because with a redirect in place, all links that are acquired will point to homepage.com but the redirect would pass them along to newpage.com at reduced 'value' regardless of their relevance to that specific product page. It would seem that if you want the ranking metrics from Home to go to New you would have to redirect, but in order to have a functioning home page which can rank for branded terms and acquire general links you should probably 301 Home and build a new page to become a home page.
I hope that question makes sense, and it would be great to get some feedback from the other minds on this board.

Yes I'd like the homepage to remain functional and all ranking data for the keyword which currently ranks there to be transferred to the new category page so the use of rel=canonical is probably the way to go. There will be a link to the new category using this keyword as anchor text in the navigation - would there be any advantage linking internally to this new page from the content on the home page as well to help pass link juice across to the new category?
-
Are you looking to have the ranking metrics and the user redirect from Home Page --> New Page or is the goal to have just the ranking metrics and spiders redirected to New Page while the user stays on Home Page?
Both a 301 and a use of the rel=canonical would accomplish the task of transfereing (most) of the link juice from Home --> New and, in time, you should see New push up in the ranks and Home drop out, for the targeted keyword(s).
I assume you would like Home Page to still be accessible to the user while ensuring New Page claims the good SERP ranking, so my thoughts would be to use the rel=canonical. The user will remain on your homepage if that is where they are attempting to navigate and the spiders/link juice will make its way over to the page you are hoping to rank with.
There may be differing opinions, so make sure you get a full range of responses before you take action.
If I am misunderstanding your question, please let me know and I will attempt to answer your question further.

Noindex child pages (whose content is included on parent pages)?
I'm sorry if there have been questions close to this before... I've using WordPress less like a blogging platform and more like a CMS for years now... For content management purposes we organize a lot of content around Parent/Child page (and custom-post-type) relationships; the Child pages are included as tabbed content on the Parent page. Should I be noindexing these child pages, since their content is already on the site, in full, on their Parent pages (ie. duplicate content)? Or does it not matter, since the crawlers may not go to all of the tabbed content? None of the pages have shown up in Moz's "High Priority Issues" as duplicate content but it still seems like I'm making the Parent pages suffer needlessly... Anything obvious I'm not taking into consideration? By the by, this is my first post here @ Moz, which I'm loving; this site and the forums are such a great resource! Anyways, thanks in advance!

The seomoz on page keyword analysis tool is not showing title or keyword in document
the SEOMOZ onpage analysis tool is not not showing title or keyword for any page in one of my sites. It says there are no title elements on my page and there are, i checked the source code myself and they are there and correct. my title and keywords are in there and show up fine in firefox and internet explorer even after i refresh them. why would this tool show them as missing in one of my sites but not others? I'm worried that google's spider might not see them if the on page analyzer doesn't see them and my rankings might drop. they showed up the other day in the seomoz on page analyzer just fine and i haven't changed anything. Thanks mozzers!

Main Page Gone For Main Keyword
For the past 5-6 months I have consistenly ranked at positions #14-16 for snow guards on snoshield.com. The past 3 days I cannot find the home page anywhere in Google for that keyword. The only thing that has really changed over the past two months is I placed 3 guest blog posts on pretty highly trusted sites that are industry related and created links to the site using suggestions from getlisted. I've read other reports of others seeing similar things happen recently. I don't think this is a penguin thing, because I can still find the site by searching for the company name, I just can't find it when searching the keyword. I did notice that a different page on the site is now ranking in position #21 for this keyword, but this page is optimized for a different keyword phrase. Is it possible that even though the sub page is optimized for a different keyword phrase, I am cannibalizing the site?

Using fathead page keywords for directories and as a red herring to competitors
I'm fairly new to SEO and I have been reading a lot on here and the SEOmoz guides over the last few days, finding it very interesting. I am wondering about page keywords, I read that the engines no longer use them. In this thread they say they still use them because of directories. http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/why-i-still-use-meta-keywords#new-comment So I was wondering, because directories are always smaller scale than search engines would keywords that are normally high competition have more clout in them? If so then using them could be misleading to competition if they think they are the actual keywords? or might this contradict between your actual chosen keywords in the directories backlink anchor text or something?

Nitrous oxide for your Comfort Would it be better to break these services up into individual pages? I was thinking I would because then I could add more pictures and expand on the topic and try to get an "A" grade on each page. I'm not sure how I could rank a page if I have 35 services listed on the page. That would be an awfully big H1! Suggestions?0 -
Does the homepage of GetSatisfaction have very good on-page SEO? please give some critique
Hi Mozzerz, If you have done successful on-page SEO optimization in the past, this may be easy for you to analyze quickly. (especially if you have some tools to help you compare things like keywords vs code weight etc) Does the homepage of www.GetSatisfaction.com constitute a well done on-page SEO? Could you please critique the homepage's SEO value and say why it is very good or why it is OK, or why it is bad.
