Domain Issue
-
Starting a new local travel guide site. Would like to buy a domain and have found one with decent Domain Authority and Trust, but they want $2500 for the domain which I feel is a bit steep since I will be not using any of the content and it is generating hardly any revenue now. . I would rather not start from scratch with no links and no trust.
I have a few questions....
-Any suggestions on sites to look for domains or strategy for finding and offering to buy?
Any guidelines on how to value domains?
If I but it and change registration do I risk losing all the value? Cold I just change technical contact info?
Any other suggestions are welcome.
Thanks.

Domaining is a huge industry in itself, but yes, there are some good ones out there. dnforum.com and namepros.com have been two sites that interest me a lot.
General guidelines- .com's are by far worth the most based on supply/demand, especially anything with a single dictionary word or 2-4 letters (less always better, no numbers always better). Other TLD's can be worth something, but seem to see much less consensus on their value. Even the above- it does vary. Sometimes you see a fish.com sell for $1 mil. I've seen other dictionary words go for south of $5k (although that's been a little while).
At the end of the day, I would only consider what it's worth to you though. I personally don't think that .com's will ever go anywhere, but the Internet is fast-paced, and there are no guarantees. There are some pros out there that are buying some pretty fancy boats off of buying and selling, but they do it in large volumes, and play the numbers. Personally, I ran a hosting company for 7 years, and had to resist a whole lot of temptation to buy up domains based on the enormous wealth of data of data on other webmasters kept in good faith that I had at my fingertips.
After leaving to start my own inbound marketing agency, I bought the domain of my last name (northcutt.com) for more than you've suggested, but there were real reasons (most of all, that I was left with little else than my personal brand to side-step into a totally different industry, and I had the chance to do it). But that price was built into my startup budget. Whatever you go with, I'd just make sure it's something you're happy with typing thousands of times, and explaining to people how to access. A lot. Anything short and memorable can also work well, and I wouldn't worry too much about weird TLD's for SEO anymore. Personally, I'm a big fan of .io domains as well.

Legal Client Wants to Change Domain Name... What's the best way to pass authority from old domain?
Hey Mozzers,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | WhiteboardCreations
I received a call on Friday from a 6 attorney law office who have been my client for a long time. They have an established brand/domain in their market which isn't very big, but has a lot of competition. 2 of the attorneys are leaving to start their own firm and they want to remove a letter from their name abbreviation, thus their domain name as well. So, the other partners want to change the domain to reflect this. They want to buy a EMD [city]lawyers.com for about $1,600 along with some others to protect their new brand and name. I have a good idea as to what I need to do, BUT would love to hear advice from the community for this type of drastic change. 301 redirects? New Google Analytics code or same just different profile? Webmasters verifications? Content from old site? Old domain forwarding or keep active for a little bit? Is not the time to get them an SSL? Also, what should I prepare them for in terms of website traffic expectations and Google authority drops or remains the same? I know their Moz DA/PA will drop to 1/1, but anything else to look out for? Thank you in advance!

Do links to a domain that re-directs to my domain pass link equity?
Hi guys. We've recently taken control of a third-party site and we're going to set up a domain re-direct so any traffic comes to our site. With any existing links that the third-party site has, will these pass link equity to our main site through the redirect? Thanks, Paul

Replatforming possible issue with Submitting URLS
We are replatforming an ecommerce site and will need to change 90% of the urls. Many current urls contain uppercase characters and the new system forces all lowercase. We are concerned with submitting the urls all at once to google it might look like spam, receive some sort of penalty or negatively affect organic search. In the last month this site received 428k unique visitors, 3.2 mil page views and has about 10k urls. They are a top 3 competitor in their vertical. We are certainly planning to do all 301 redirects. What can we do additionally to reduce the risk of penalties here?

Moving low ranking domain
I have a website, that I rewrote great content for, but I recently found that there are many, many links going to the subdomain that may be pulling it down. Has anyone had experience taking down a site and then moving the content to a new site? Will it be considered duplicate content if you completely take the old site down and use rel="canonical" on new site pages? I don't want to lose the good content, but I cannot have it on the current URL with all the bad backlinking (it's a complicated situation, as I need to keep those backlinks which are affiliates). Thank you.

Complementary Domain
Hi guys, I have the following situation I would like some help. Because my client is in Brazil, I will make up fictional names so it's easier to understand. My client is a shoe store whose domain is mangabeira.com. That is the brand name and will always be the main domain and reference of the website. We were offered the domain shoes.com. There is no intention of changing the brand name or anything, but there would be a redirect that would send the user who to mangabeira.com. My question is how much impact would that complementary domain do to my SEO performance and how that redirect must be handled. Thanks.
