Google is ranking the wrong page for the targeted keyword
-
I have two examples below where we want it to rank for the targeted page but google picked another page to rank instead. This is happening a lot on this site I just recently started to work on.
Example 1
Googles Choice for key word Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/cl/50/Tires-and-Wheels
What we want Google to choice for Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/49/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires
Other pages about Motorcycle tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/d/12/Motorcycle-Tires
We even used the rel="canonical" for this url to point to our target page. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/50/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires
Example 2
ATV Tires We want this page to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/43/81/165/ATV-Tires however google has decided to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/43/81/165/723/ATV-Tires-All that is acutally one folder under where we want it.

Thanks that was good detailed info. We are starting to do most of those things over the next 1-2 months and hope to see the outcome we want!

This is a common problem for site owners. Some guidelines to avoid this problem:
1. Pick a single keyword for each webpage. If you choose a second keyword, have it be a close variation of the main keyword such as Motorcycle Tire and Motorcycle Tires.
2. Offer your website content in as flat of a structure as possible. Think Wikipedia. Ideally all your main content will be a maximum of 3 clicks from the home page.
3. Enforce your keyword choice in every manner possible:
a. the url /motorcycle-tires
b. The page title "Motorcycle Tires"
c. The first words of the first sentence (again, think Wikipedia): Motorcycle tires are a critical piece of your bike's performance. Speed, traction, gas mileage, safety and more are impacted by your tire selection.....
d. Throughout your site use anchor text to direct "motorcycle tire" traffic to your chosen page
e. Earn links to the page. Even if the links do not use anchor text, your URL will serve as natural anchor text for your chosen term. ** Please note I mentioned earn links. That does not mean build directory links, paying for links or using link exchanges.
4. If your site has 100+ pages, you need to have some form of content map. New pages should not be whimsically added but rather carefully planned. Be careful not to cannibalize your chosen key term on other pages.
-
Thanks for your help, we are aware of the text and when I was hired they hired a copy writer as well to start writing quality content for the site that will be useful to humans. If you look at the second example it is the one we want to rank for is actually higher up in the site but the page google chose to rank is one folder lower.
Also what do you think about this. They also built a page targeting motorcycle parts you can see here http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/s/49/61/Motorcycle-Parts; however google still just pulls up their home page.
My best guess so far has been site structure and that they do not really have any good anchor text/ internal links showing google what pages are important. What are your thoughts?
-
The primary cause of this issue is related to a lack of proper optimization along with site structure challenges.
If you look at the Tires and Wheels page, the first block of text at the bottom has a headline "Motorcycle Tires, ATV Tires, Dirt Bike Tires...." Elsewhere on the page you have a headline "Top Selling Motorcycle Tires". Under the Dual Sport Tires image you have a listing for Motorcycle Tires. There are other references as well. It is clear this page is highly relevant to Motorcycle Tires.
I have not examined your site structure but I notice the Tires and Wheels URL has fewer layers then the Motorcycle Tires page. /cl/50 versus /c/49/-/181. If that structure means the Motorcycle Tires page is buried deeper on the site, that is another concern as well.
In summary, you are cannibalizing your own keywords and the site lacks focus. It seems low quality SEO was performed as the text at the bottom of the page is what I refer to as "SEO text". In other words, it was not added for users but rather to throw some content on the page for search engines.

Why Would My Page Have a Higher PA and DA, Links & On-Page Grade & Still Not Rank?
The Search Term is "Alcohol Ink" and our client has a better page authority, domain authority, links to the page, and on-page grade than those in the SERP for spaces 5-10 and we're not even ranked in the top 51+ according to Moz's tracker. The only difference I can see is that our URL doesn't use the exact text like some of the 5-10 do. However, regardless of this, our on-page grade is significantly higher than the rest of them. The one thing I found was that there were two links to the page (that we never asked for) that had a spam score in the low 20's and another in the low 30's. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to maybe get around this? Certainly, a content campaign and linking campaign around this could also help but I'm kind of scratching my head. The client is reputable, with a solid domain age and well recognized in the space so it's not like it's a noob trying to get in out of nowhere.

Page Rank Worse After Optimization
For a long time, we had terrible on page SEO. No keyword targeting, no meta titles or descriptions. Just a brief 2-4 sentence product description and shipping information. Strangely, we weren't ranking too bad. For one product, we were ranking on page 1 of Google for a certain keyword. My goal to reach the top of page 1 would be easy (or so I thought). I have now optimized this page to rank better for the same keyword. I have a 276 word description with detailed specifications and shipping information. I have a strong title and meta description with keywords and modifers. I have also included a video demonstration, additional photos and an PDF of the owners manual. In my eyes, the page is 100% better than it ever was. In the eyes of MOZ, it's better also. I've got an A with the On-Page Grader. Why is this page now ranking on page 8 of Google? What have I done wrong? What can I do to correct it?

Rank Tracker Result Not Reflected In Google
I'm tracking keyword results in Rank Tracker, but I can't confirm the positions when I do a Google search for the tracked keywords. Does anybody know why RT says the site should be #23, but is not actually in Google? Is there a way to check Google results from different data centers? If I recall, Google allowed the option to view results from different cities, though I don't know if they still allow this.

Consistent Ranking Jumps Page 1 to Page 5 for months - help needed
Hi guys and gals, I have a really tricky client who I just can't seem to gain consistency with in their SERP results. The keywords are competitive but what the main issue I have is the big page jumps that happen pretty much on a weekly basis. We go up and down 40 positions and this behaviour has been going on for nearly 6 months.

I felt it would resolve itself in time but it has not. The website is a large ecommerce website. Their link profile is OK in regards to several high quality newspaper publication links, majority brand related anchor texts and the link building we have engaged in has all been very good i.e. content relevant / high quality places. See below for some potential causes I think could be the reason: The on page SEO is good however the way their ecommerce website is setup they have formed a substantial amount of duplicate title tags. So in my opinion this is a potential cause. The previous web developer set-up 301 redirects all to their home page for any 404 errors. I know best practice is to go to the most relevant pages, however could this be a potential issue? We had some server connectivity issues show up in webmasters tools but that was for 1 day about 4 months ago. Since then no issues. they have quite a few 'blocked URLs' in their robots.txt file, e.g. Disallow: /login, Disallow: /checkout/ but to me these seem normal and not a big issue. We have seen a decrease over the last 12 months in Webmasters Tools of 'total indexed web pages' from 5000 to 2000 which is quite an odd statistic. Summary So all in all I am a tad stumped. We have some duplicate content issues in title tags, perhaps not following best practice in the 301 redirects but other than that I dont see any major on page issues, unless I am missing something in the seriousness of what I have listed.
Finally we have also do a bit of a cull of poor quality links, requesting links to be removed and also submitting a 'disavow' of some really bad links. We do not have a manual penalty though. Thoughts, feedback or comments VERY welcome.0 -
Incorrect cached page indexing in Google while correct page indexes intermittently
Hi, we are a South African insurance company. We have a page http://www.miway.co.za/midrivestyle which has a 301 redirect to http://www.miway.co.za/car-insurance. Problem is that the former page is ranking in the index rather than the latter. The latter page does index occasionally in the same position, but rarely. This is primarily for search phrases like "car insurance" and "car insurance quotes". The ranking was knocked down the index with Penquin 2.0. It was not ranking at all but we have managed to recover to 12/13. This abnormally has only been occurring since the recovery. The correct page does index for other search terms like "insurance for car". Your help would be appreciated, thanks!

Why? Keyword ranking on Google go under and down regularly
I have a group of keyword that constantly move within the Google SERP. One week they are in the top 3 spots the next they fall down to position 7+ (in some cases they even fall 20 places) then after this they eventually go back to their most regular position within the top 3 spots. Can anyone please explain why this keep happening?
