Crawl rate
-
Hello,
In google WMT my site has the following message.
<form class="form" action="/webmasters/tools/settings-ac?hl=en&siteUrl=http://www.prom-hairstyles.org/&siteUrl=http://www.prom-hairstyles.org/&hl=en" method="POST">Your site has been assigned special crawl rate settings. You will not be able to change the crawl rate. Why would this be?A bit of backgound - this site was hammered by Penguin or maybe panda but seems to be dragging itself back up (maybe) but has dropped from several thousand visitors/day to 100 or so.Cheers,Ian</form>

OK thanks.

There is nothing negative about the message. It is common and expected for sites which use CDNs.

Thanks for replying, I have been using a CDN (up until a week ago) and no there haven't been any issues that I can put down to this, I just hadn't seen a message like that before and wondered if it was significant.

What is your hosting setup? Are you using some form of cloud hosting such as Amazon or have a CDN set up?
Generally speaking, that message from Google is a good thing. It means they have optimized your crawl rate based on your setup. If you feel there is a need to adjust the rate, it can be done. Are you experiencing any issue?
The Panda/Penguin issue would have no relation to your crawl rate settings.

Aggregate rating for products
hello Currently I'm working with a retail customer to optimize his search experience. There's some odd behaviour about aggregate ratings for products. Products without a price (price based on daily demand) are shown with proper delivering the 'rich snippet' search result. On the other hand, products with a price are shown normally without any mark up. Here's what I did for now checked mark ups code wise (used the markup validator) re-submitted xml sitemaps search query is (for test purposes): [product name] + [retailer brand name] the question is: why aren't just these specific aggregated ratings (with a price) shown and the other ones are shown properly? Furthermore, is it a question of relevancy (can't imagine that cause the search query is really specific to the needed result)? thank you!

Log files vs. GWT: major discrepancy in number of pages crawled
Following up on this post, I did a pretty deep dive on our log files using Web Log Explorer. Several things have come to light, but one of the issues I've spotted is the vast difference between the number of pages crawled by the Googlebot according to our log files versus the number of pages indexed in GWT. Consider: Number of pages crawled per log files: 2993 Crawl frequency (i.e. number of times those pages were crawled): 61438 Number of pages indexed by GWT: 17,182,818 (yes, that's right - more than 17 million pages) We have a bunch of XML sitemaps (around 350) that are linked on the main sitemap.xml page; these pages have been crawled fairly frequently, and I think this is where a lot of links have been indexed. Even so, would that explain why we have relatively few pages crawled according to the logs but so many more indexed by Google?

Robots.txt crawling URL's we dont want it to
Hello We run a number of websites and underneath them we have testing websites (sub-domains), on those sites we have robots.txt disallowing everything. When I logged into MOZ this morning I could see the MOZ spider had crawled our test sites even though we have said not to. Does anyone have an ideas how we can stop this happening?

Javascript to manipulate Google's bounce rate and time on site?
I was referred to this "awesome" solution to high bounce rates. It is suppose to "fix" bounce rates and lower them through this simple script. When the bounce rate goes way down then rankings dramatically increase (interesting study but not my question). I don't know javascript but simply adding a script to the footer and watch everything fall into place seems a bit iffy to me. Can someone with experience in JS help me by explaining what this script does? I think it manipulates the reporting it does to GA but I'm not sure. It was supposed to be placed in the footer of the page and then sit back and watch the dollars fly in. 🙂
