I have data missing in Google and don't know who to turn to for help
-
Hi everyone,
I know this isn't the 'Google help forum' but I'm stuck and I hope someone here might be able to point me in the right direction.
For a period last month - Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th November Google Analytics reports our site as having 0 visits.
In addition we have two days which were strangely low - Weds 21st 105 visits, Weds 28th Nov 78 visits.
We normally get between 1000 and 1200 visits on a weekday from a global audience (I know that was the Thanksgiving weekend, but the US accounts for ~10% of total traffic).
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you do? The "report a bug" board on the Google help forum has a few entries like this, people with 0 visits shouting "help!" into the void with no response.
Ideas?

Hi Paul,
Despite the fact that it looks like I won't get this back (though I've asked for server logs, so who knows) that was a stellar answer, thank you.
I will definitely add another profile to the site and also set up a notification warning.
I'll also make sure I keep this handy and refer back to it every time I set up a site!
Thanks again.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Steven, but generally if you've lost data in Google Analytics, you'll never get a solution from Google themselves. There's just no support for these kinds of issues unless your a big player.
About all you can do is focus on making certain that nothing was done on your end to compromise the collecting of the data. Once you've confirmed that, you can use alternate sources to estimate the unrecorded traffic to correct for the hole in your data.
You'll want to really dive in to rule out anything that could have compromised the data collection. Any changes whatsoever to the site need to be investigated.
- Any changes that added or changed the order of JavaScripts could have created conflicts with the GA tag.
- Template changes could have resulted in an inadvertent removal of the tags, with later edits reinstating them
- any adjustments of the tags themselves, e.g. adding download or outbound link tracking
Really put on your thinking cap for this one - it can take some serious digging through what was going on on the site during that time period. Also have a look at the characteristics of the little bit of traffic you got on the latter 2 days to see if that point to a culprit. I just had an issue like this on the weekend for a client's site. Traffic dropped to a tenth what it should be. Turned out it was only registering traffic from mobile - which uses a different template. So I had a hint - later confirmed - that the GA tag had been edited on the main template (causing data problems) but not on the mobile template which collected normally.
To confirm you actually did have traffic, (e.g. that you weren't having server outages for example) and to get an estimate of the lost traffic, you can use your server logs. if you're hosted on a system using cPanel, you probably have something like AWStats automatically collecting traffic data in your server logs. These logs collect data differently than GA's JavaScript tags, but they'll still give proof you had traffic, and a good approximation of the volume.
To be better prepared in case this happens in the future, I strongly recommend a couple of steps.
- Create two additional GA profiles for your website - one called RAW which you NEVER touch - no filters at all, no customisations whatsoever. It's your backup if all else fails. And a second called TEST where you try out EVERY customisation before adding it to your working profile. (Note these will only start collecting data from the day created, so do it asap)
- Add another lightweight analytics app to your site, or at least make sure you're satisfied with the data collected by your server logging as a backup for what GA is collecting - and have a plan for archiving it.
- Add a custom Intelligence Alert to GA to email you anytime it detects a drop in traffic. I generally set mine to anything more than a 25% drop compared to same day the previous week. That way you'll know as soon as you have a problem and can investigate immediately.
- Add an Annotation to GA every time you make any kind of an adjustment or change to the site. Makes it much easier to track back to what you did that might have caused traffic changes/problems - or even to understand what led to significant improvement. (Because your memory will never be enough for that
- Set up a site availability monitoring service like Pingdom.com to notify you anytime you site becomes unavailable (if you don't already have something in place). Don't rely on your host for this.
Hope this gives you some next steps to deal with the problem. I know the frustration.
Paul

I forgot to mention - I checked if there were any filters on there and there aren't.

Blocking Standard pages with Robots.txt (t&c's, shipping policy, pricing & privacy policies etc)
Hi I've just had best practice site migration completed for my old e-commerce store into a Shopify environment and I see in GSC that it's reporting my standard pages as blocked by robots.txt, such as these below examples. Surely I don't want these blocked ? is that likely due to my migrators or s defaults setting with Shopify does anyone know? : t&c's shipping policy pricing policy privacy policy etc So in summary: Shall I unblock these? What caused it Shopify default settings or more likely my migration team? All Best Dan

Google Tag Manager Tracking
We have Google Tag Manager set up to track our website https://kontenta.co.uk/ Although we have a blog - https://kontenta.co.uk/designroom/ I'm just wondering if it's better to track the sites separately? If so, how do I add the blog to tag manager? Does it need setting up as a filter to match the regular expression https://kontenta.co.uk/designroom/* We just need to figure out the best way to measure both the website and blog traffic and if users are coming from the blog to the site, and what interactions they are making. Thanks

Google Analytics underreporting
I have a site selling items, I use paypal buttons and get a report using ipn back from paypal telling me when I have sold a item. I also have a Google analytics event setup on the button, and one on the confirmation page.
Reporting & Analytics | | AlanMosley
For example in the last few days I have sold over 10 items from the website, but have only 2 events from the button and none from the confirmation page. The confirmation page depends on the user getting redirected back from PayPal so I can see that being upper reported, but there is no way you can buy without clicking the button.
I have the chrome addon from google to debug your analytics code and it fires every time.
The figures seem to report only about 20% of events over a long period of time. If it was not working at all, I could assume I have not set things up correctly but this is not the case, I get a regular flow of events but at about 205 of sales.
I am very disappointed with GA, seems a waste of time. anyone else had the same expirence?0 -
Re-branding with Google Analytics
GM Mozzers, I apologize in advance if my description of this issue is confusing, but I'm doing my best here. Anyway, due to legal reasons, one of the publications I manage was forced to change their name. We set-up a 301 redirect from the previous domain and have also set-up an analytics profile for the new domain, however, as it stands, visits to the old domain outnumber those to the new domain 12:1. Is there anyway to set-up my analytics profile to the new URL so that this traffic is being attributed to the new domain and the new site, since, after all, it is a redirect. I hope that I explained this sufficiently. Any and all insight will be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Where are google analytics stats for iphone4
hi We were looking at the Google Analytics for one of our sites and noticed that there were NO pageviews from device=iphone and resolution=640x960 in the report. Given that iphone4 is supposed to be 640x960, and would be the most popular device (at least in our offices and everyone I know), it seems wierd. I sorted the Mobile Devices report by device and resolution to see what was available. The first 160 results were all device=not set. Finally got to device=iPhone and there were three entries: resolution 0x0 had 11 views resolution 320x396 had 45 views resolution 320x480 had 3,944 views. Hopefully all iphone4 users havent been classified as not set. Or is it possible that iphone4s claim to be 320x480 in browsers, as per http://www.alistapart.com/articles/a-pixel-identity-crisis/ Even worse, if I look at the Samsung Galaxy S II (myown phone), there are over 30 screen resolution combinations. Does anyone have anything to shed on this? I asked about it on the google analytics twitter account last week but havent had a response. Are there other analytics solutions that would distinguish between the iphones? Warning - this is a link to a large image, with the not set stats at the top. 6Sjji

Google encryption of search results
Hello Is there any definitive information on whether the recent changes to the way Google encrypts search results for people logged into Google affects the traffic present via the Google Adwords Keyword tool? Plus, how does SEOmoz ensure/minimise the affect of personalisation/localisation etc. on the rankings data provided via the pro tool. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Kind regards Neil

How to measure number of visits from Google News coming from Google Universal Search (NOT referral coming directly coming from news.google.com) with google analyitcs
I'm running a news site, and I have a problem of accuratly measuring which traffic is REALLY coming from google news. I analyzed a lot of individual articles and I come to the conclusion, that the visits, that come from the google news section in the universal search results are counted as "normal" search engine traffic in google analytics. So if you do a Google search for a topic that includes links from Google news, you don't get an accurate referral count. As an example, if you do a search for "eBay", incorporated into the page 1 search results you may also see Google news results as well.
Reporting & Analytics | | Mulle
If someone clicks on that Google news link that appears in Google search, it shows up in Google analytics as a referral from Google search, when it was actually from a Google news referral. I was already checking google analytics and google news help forums and searched SEO blogs for this. But I wasn't able to find a working solution. Can anybody help me out with this problem? Thanks so much, Matthias0
