Best method to measure conversions (Adwords)
-
Hi, I am a new member and fairly new to PPC. I have a service based site (car detailing) and I have been using Adwords for quite sometime now.
My primary question is about tracking conversions. I have dedicated landing pages for each one of my ad groups (and some kw specific landing pages). When a potential customer lands on one of my pages - lets say my "car wash" page, they have the option to:
-
Call from that page to book a service (I have a trackable number on that pages)
-
Book online (its a 3rd party booking app with no tracking functionality)
-
Continue to my main site for find out about our other services (I have a few outbound links set up on the page)
But, I am running into problems when it comes to conversion tracking. I am not doing any call tracking via Adwords, so what would be the most effective way for me to track conversions?
A) Should I set up event tracking in order to count outbound clicks as conversions?
B) Should I remove all outbound links from that landing page and use the custom phone number on that page? My fear with this option is that customers may want to see additional services that are on my primary site. Therefore, I don't want to limit them to that landing page only.
C) Should I use Adwords call tracking? If I go this route, I would have to decrease my campaign budgets in order to offset the call tracking costs.
Or maybe there is another option I should consider that someone with more experience could offer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the feedback, this is the type of information I needed. I saw some sites recommend tracking the outbound clicks, but I didn't think that would give me any real actionable information.

If you're tracking by using different phone numbers, you could set a cookie on these landing pages with which phone number is the default to use, and then have the rest of your pages display that phone number instead of your regular phone number. That way users will ever be exposed to one number, and you'll have tracking for those people who came to your site from a landing page.
All of this wouldn't be too difficult to implement. You could do it with jQuery and a jQuery cookie plugin.

Got the issue - you can add a dynamic number changer to your main site but you would need to add a tag to all urls from site a to site b to make it work .

I have unique numbers per adgroup, but being that I have outbound links on the landing pages that lead to my main site (which has a different phone number), I can't discern whether the calls initially came from organic, direct or ppc traffic.
I know that if I remove all outbound links from the landing pages, they will have to use the unique phone numbers, but that's something I don't really want to do.
I don't know of any definitive way to fix this issue, so, given this situation, i'm just wondering what would be the best way to track conversions. Should I just tag outbound links and assign a value to them and treat those as conversion metrics or is there another way.

What is your main issue with your current tracking? Do you have unique numbers per adgroup that you match to your adwords?

Adwords Expanded Text Ads - How are they working for you?
I think it would be nice to get a consensus from more people. The day expanded text ads came out last week, I immediately jumped on it and created them for all my campaigns. I still left some of the old ads running in each ad group so that I could compare. Looking at the conversion data from the last week, the conversion rates are between 2-7x lower on the expanded text ads, and as a result, the cost per conversion is 2-5x higher as well. Basically, they're performing horribly. The click-through rate is mildly higher, but who cares if they're not converting? I know it's only a week's worth of data, but it seems the difference is enough to be statistically significant. I'm wording what everyone else's experience has been.

AdWords & Iframes?
We have a client that has syndicated content across a variety of domains. They have no access to the domain/hosting for the site that the content is being syndicated on, but would like to run PPC campaigns to these pages. The page is a header, footer and then the main page content is inside of an iframe, and I was wondering if Google will even allow that to be used as a landing page for a PPC campaign? Thanks!

Adwords structure issue
Background: We manufacture and sell our own products to the UK and English speaking world. We rank well for major terms but there is lots more traffic to be had with PPC so we've always used Adwords At present I target keywords in 3 ways. 1. I have an [exact match] campaign that I use to target terms like [acme widget] 2. I have a broad match campaign that I use to target keyword targets I have identified through research like +blue +acme +widget. 3. I have an even broader campaign that I use to target the very long tail terms that it would be too time consuming to create groups and ads for like +camo +rocket +acme +widget The problem: My 3rd category won't show! I use varied bids to make sure the more relevant ads show where they overlap (eg 2nd campaign bid is 50% of 1st campaign, 3rd campaign bid is 50% of 2nd) but 3rd campaign wont show for long tail searches when I test it with the random crap that people search for! I get the error message... Your ad isn't being displayed for this keyword because there may be other ads within your account that are ranked higher and have similar keywords. 2 questions I suppose, is my structure acceptable and if it should work why isn't it?! Thanks so much all! Matthew

Bing Adwords
Hello Moz Community, I am curious to see if anyone else is experiencing the troubles I am having with Bing Adwords. In the past (not even a month ago), my companies campaigns were driving great traffic, with high CTR, Conv. Rate, and low CPC; but recently (start of February) traffic has increased (not the good kind) and CPC has gone through the roof. When I say not the good kind, I mean the traffic we are getting is not relevant at all to our industry our the campaign/ad groups targets at all. These campaigns have been running for a good year with regular maintenance and great results. I keep up to date with all the negative words, constantly am A/B testing copy and landing pages, and keeping up to date with good SEO/SEM habits. Since February has started like I said traffic has increased (not the good kind) and search queries seem to be more and more outrageous by the day. I guess my question is has anyone else experienced this and is it a possibility that Bing (Microsoft) loosened up their algorithm to drive more (I hate to say it) money into their pockets? I haven't heard/read anything publicly that they made such a change but I have read that they have had an increase in profit and a majority of CPC for accounts have increased without actual search share going up. Please feel free to share you thoughts about this and if you have experienced this in anyway. Thanks All, Brian

Why doesn't exact match appear to be working for me in Google AdWords tool?
Hi guys, I recently read Rand's article here and tried out the exact match symbols on my keywords. However, these don't appear to be working for me as the results aren't showing up as they do in the above SEOmoz article (attached screenshot). What am I doing wrong?
