Is there any benefit in on-site duplicate content?
-
I have about 50 internal pages on my site that I want to add a "Do it yourself tutorial" to in an effort to build the quality of the pages. Is this going to de-value the content if I put it on all 50 pages? It's difficult to write similar content 50 different ways.

Great information. My understanding was always the same as Steve's .....it depends on the ratio of unique vs. duplicate content. A while back, I had read that this ratio was something like 80/20 (duplicate not to exceed 20%). However, I think I will make each piece unique for best results.

From my understanding, it would depend entirely on the ratio of unique to duplicate content... but it's a common problem if you mean what I think you do. Affiliate sites for example, ones that use data given to them by manufacturers or suppliers they're affiliates for. Some use the same product descriptions without adding enough of their own unique stuff to break it up and separate their pages from the other affiliates using the same content.
The more unique, the better. Personally I would try to make each set of product information as distinctive from the others as possible anyway... it can do nothing except help

Steve, if you have products with multiple color variations and each color variation has it's own page with a unique title, but duplicate product information is that bad as well?
-
Some content (such as sidebars, menus, footers, etc...) will be discounted from being seen as dupe content from the block level analysis that's done by the search engines. So that stuff is fine, but if pages are too similar, without a decent amount of distinguishing content, then no that's bad. Make sure the title tags aren't the same in any case.

I have some information on my site that is seen on thousands of my site pages. For example, I have a sidebar that lists my most popular articles. Or, I have a snippet of text that says what the website is about. I also have a small blurb about me on every page.
I would say that as long as the majority of text on the page is not duplicate you are ok.

As long as there is plenty of unique content on each page, adding some redundant content is not a problem. Especially not if it will improve the experience for the users, thereby improving click behavior.

Stolen Content reposted on other sites. How does this affect ranking?
Visitors often copy and paste my content and post it elsewhere... on Facebook, on Tumblr, on forums and sometimes on competing websites... but they don't link to me. How does Google treat this duplicated content? What is the best way to handle it? File DCMA claims or ask them for a link?

Duplicate content, is it ever ok?
I am building a large site for a client who sells physical products. I am using WordPress as my CMS (as a piece of background information). There are a few products that need to be listed in the sites hierarchy in multiple locations as such: Parent A Child 1 Parent B Child 2 Child 3 Parent C Child 1 I am concerned that having a product exist in multiple instances will cause indexing problems for that product. I can't be the only person to come across this issue, would love some feedback on the best practices for such an issue. Thanks in advance

Issue: Duplicate Page Content
For duplicate page content, how different should pages be? For example, I have seven locations and on each location page, we offer a discount. The discounts are the same currently and open into a pop-up window. So it looks something like this: mysite.com/locationA/dicount mysite.com/locationB/discount mysite.com/locationX/discount The pages are identical. Should I change the verbiage on each page or let it be? I noticed that our organic search rankings have dropped since our site upgrade and this is one item that SEOMOZ has noted. Thanks! DHO

Altering site structure
I work for a business that operates several sites that were developed a very long time ago. We've been making many different changes over the past 12-18 months to improve these sites in several different ways. One area that we've never discussed or attempted is general site structure. Its pretty obvious that when the business was started they had never heard of information architecture or usability design. To make matters worse, the internal linking strategy appears to have been link everything to everything. Well after being told that it couldn't be done - I'm getting our team to say we must focus on this, if for no other reason that to help consumers figure out how to navigate through our site. Today we essentially have a series of category / information pages. In some cases, we hang more detailed topical content related to a category /informational page in a hub and spoke manner. Although remember what I said about linking everything to everything. In reality there are a series of subtopics that should been designed for every category / informational area. Instead, what happened is in some cases the subtopic is integrated into the hub or category page, in other situations is hung off the page as a spoke page and in others the subtopic isn't even covered. The plan is to standardize - each category will have 'n' subtopics (~10-12, we're still working this out). From a navigational standpoint users will be able to easily navigate both across categories as well as subtopics within a category as well as between categories within adjacent/similar subtopics. This is essentially a grid if that makes sense. The question is this - we have some keywords that do well in SEO and many many more that do not and the trend has not been our friend. We're considering keeping the URLs of the pages associated with strong keywords the same within the nav structure, even though this might mean the URL for a spoke page will be inconsistent with the spoke page name from a different category. I don't see any real danger for pages that either are not associated with any ranking keywords or only very weak keywords. Maybe I'm wrong. What things should we consider in this change? We believe that this standardization should help consumers find the information they are looking for in a much more efficient manner, so page views/visit should go up. Additionally, this prepares us for category and subtopic comparison pages and other added functionality being added in a logical manner. We also think that as we add depth about a subtopic, it will be easier for us to acquire links to our site because the subtopics within a category will appeal to different websites. This is by no means a small project. We have hundreds and hundreds of pages. Do folks think this is a worthwhile endeavor? We've spent a lot of time cleaning up H1 tags, structure of our pages, anchor tags, page load order and speed, image caching, etc. Site structure, URL length and internal link structure are essentially what is left. Once these are done we intend to really get going on better and more organized content on our site. Thoughts?

I get quite a lot of Duplicate Page Conntent and Page Titles warnings and trying to find a workaround through the forums and posts. I continuously get this error on most of my pages: URL: http://domain.com/benefits with the same Page but with a WWW in front URL: http://www.domain.com/benefits Any advice will be highly appreciated. Thanks, Athos
