No-follow value
-
While conducting competitive analysis and examining link profiles via OSE, one will generally see a portion of external inbound links possessing the "no follow" attribute.
I am wondering what the latest general consensus is regarding whether or not these links contribute any link juice or page authority - enough to influence SERP positioning? Or contribute to domain authority?
One of my client's competitors has several hundred more inbound links from external domains than we do. The majority of these are "no follow" links from pages of relatively low page authority, but the domain subject matter is quite relevant. The competitor's site generally ranks higher for similar key phrases. And so far, this is the only reason I can see ( I have examined and compared numerous factors ) which is allowing the competitor to outrank us.
There is no doubt in my mind we have superior content and on-page SEO structure, so now I am looking at this purely from an off-page perspective to identify ranking factors.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think you are right on the money with that assessment. They were ranking higher from the beginning. Domains are very close in age. It's kind of ironic, in that, the no follow supposedly passes no juice, yet I also read a mix should be present. Uhh... why? LOL
Our competitor's site does indeed have a healthy mix of follow and no follow links. At this point, I am wondering if the no follow links are considered or weighted in other ways (e.g. as a measure of trust or relevancy)?
Anyway, I am with you on this, I suspect the no follow links do lend "something" - just not sure what...

The rule of thumb is that the no follow attribute doesn't pass any link juice but in my humble opinion I have personally seen sites that would not get discovered otherwise with no other links pointing to it and on page seo not so great get discovered and started to rank well relatively quick because a link does exist. Also it has been mentioned in the past that a good link profile should incorporate both followed and no followed links.
Your clients opposition might have a healthy mix of followed and no followed links. Also Domain age plays a factor as well. Were they ranking higher than you from the beginning or did they all of a sudden shout up in the serps?

Sudden and dramatic decrease in External Followed Links and Total External Links
I'm not sure how or why this has happened but from a span of a week my client's site went from 518 total external links to 97. I also saw a dramatic decrease in traffic for that week as well. I'm new to the SEO game but I have not made any changes to their content other than importing old blog posts that did not get migrated to their new host. Any thoughts? www.cobbcountyattorneys.com Thanks! JC

What's the value of Exact Match Keyword Domains vs. Company Name Domains?
Hey Mozers, I was in a discussion this morning about the value of Exact Match Keyword domains vs. a company name domain and wanted to get a little more clarification. Let's say we are doing a site for a company called Favored Dental, and they have had the domain favoredental.com for quite a while and have their authority built up in it. Is it better to have favored-dental.com or favoreddental.co or keep its current form? The reasoning behind the alternate domains would be they have the exact match keyterm, in this case lets say "Favored Dental" is the keyterm we were going after. To my knowledge EMDs aren't as relevant as they'd use to be as Google would rather branding of companies instead of keyterm domains? Is this correct, or do EMDs of keywords you're going after hold higher authority? Thanks for the clarification!

Why such a difference in external followed links details?
I love using seomoz and have done for a few years. I am no SEO expert, but like to think I can get away with making out I know what I'm on about! I use opensiteexplorer regualrly and usually enjoy delving deeper into it's metrics, but one thing is bothering me (before I start with this, please forgive me if I am missing something obvious - you may have to point it out in your answer!) So I run a comparison of a few sites and pay attention to the external followed links section. On checking this number at root domain level, company A has 12,666 external followed links. So I want to dig a little deeper as to the qulaity of those links and click along to the inbound links tab, here I select the following: "followed & 301" > "only external" > "all links to this root domain" > leaving the results ungrouped Downloading this table I only have results for 3,416 links - why such a big difference to the previous 12,666 or am I missing something here? Would just like a bit of clarification 🙂

Competitor's Ranking's Reports are Showing Blank Values for Rankings
When selecting competitors to see how they rank for specific terms in the ranking's report page here, it loads the page normally, but without any actual rankings. Where values should be, it lists all values as our competition not ranking whatsoever (for all competitors). I'm not sure if there is something we're doing wrong, or perhaps we just need to wait for a refresh, but if anybody could help out, that would be wonderful!
