Shared Hosting Vs VPS Hosting
-
From an SEO perspective what are the advantages of VPS Hosting VS Shared Hosting for a local website that has less that 200 pages and gets max 2000 hits per month?
Is VPS Hosting worth the extra expense for a local Real Estate Website?

What is the site built on? If wordpress, check out wpengine (no affiliation). Just saw this post and wanted to respond as I had tons of downtime when I migrated a site to a shared environment on another host. Site kept having downtime no matter what I tried with support. So you can imagine the frustration and how this can impact the business not just from a search perspective. I think the question here is how stable do you need something. Does shared work? Yea sure. But if you are putting something that is the core of your business on a $4.95mth host, than you get $4.95 worth of insurance.

The 24- 48 hours time frames are highly overstated. There are numerous methods of transferring a site with no downtime. Even if you have downtime, it is typically a couple hour period (locally) where some users will go to the old site, whereas other users will go to the new site. If you have a relatively static site which services a local area, such as a local realty site, the issue is quite minimal.
Here is the bottom line....your current site is hosted on a shared server which is so restrictive you can't even add a 301 redirect. To be candid, a site which has operated under those conditions could not reasonably be so hyper-sensitive to the potential short transition period from a simple server change. If I am mistaken, then you need to hire a professional developer to manage the migration on your behalf.

I was also wondering what is your opinion on Rankings impact from changing Host providers?
If done correctly, there is no negative impact at all. The primary issue is during the switch over itself.
The issues of duplicate content and split links should not be a factor. Those issues can potentially occur when URLs change. That does not happen if you are simply changing hosts. The same applies to the www vs non-www and index.html issue. If these issues are not presently occurring, and you properly move all files associated with your site, and your new server is properly configured, the items you mentioned will not be considerations.

I have reached out to several hosting companies and they stated that my site will be down for 24 to 48 hours if I transfer my site over to their service.
I am sure that this would impact my rankings for having the site down. They said it's because I will need to update the domain servers.
Is there any way to prevent downtime while transferring a site?
-
Thank you for your answer. I was also wondering what is your opinion on Rankings impact from changing Host providers?
I ask this because my current Web Host doesn't allow me to do a 301 redirect.
I have heard that changing providers can negatively impact search rankings because of the change of IP Address.
Note: my concern is duplicate content and split links to my site. From www and non-www version of home page along with the index.html version.

Is VPS Hosting worth the extra expense for a local Real Estate Website?
In short, absolutely. Longer answer below.
Shared hosting typically involves hundreds of websites on a single server. Shared hosting is the lowest form of hosting offered. It is very common to have all types of bad sites (porn sites, mail spammers, etc) on the same server as your real estate site. Server outages are common along with numerous other issues such as having your mail server flagged for spam.
A VPS typically divides a server's resources like a pizza into 8 - 12 "slices". You have dedicated resources assigned to your site along with over a 90% reduction in the user population. If you care at all about SEO, which you apparently do based on your presence at SEOmoz, you should consider using VPS at a minimum for site hosting.
I have worked with clients in the past who have tried shared hosting with quality hosts. I worked with the hosts to move the sites to other shared servers which they deemed as more mature / stable. The sites still experienced monthly outages. Typical site owners are not even aware of these outages. As part of a solid SEO plan, you should use a monitoring service to notify you of any site outages. I use Alertra but there are many similar services available.

For a site of that size and traffic volume I think you'll be fine with shared hosting - as long as you choose a reputable, quality host - which can be difficult when it comes to choosing a shared hosting environment!
I hesitate to recommend specific hosting companies because I've had both good and bad experiences with a number of hosts. Do your research and find a host with great support, reputation and standards.

PDF - host, link, recreate?
I want to get as much SEO juice as possible onto my site. Our partner who is the manufacturer has about 5 pdf's per product listed on their website already. What should I do to create content and drive the most traffic to my reseller site? 1. Should I do a direct outbound link to their PDF and Google will crawl that content to boost my keywords? 2. Should I download the pdf and then upload the exact PDF onto our site? Will Google know this is not my content and copied? 3 Should I copy and paste the PDF content and paste it into our sites product page directly? 4. Should I recreate the PDF by copying most of our content and use our branding/contact details? then upload or copy and paste that content onto our site? (obviously alot more work) We have MANY products and different suppliers but want a way to be better at SEO then our manufactures. Option to any more ideas or ways to cut down on as much work as possible while driving the most traffic. Thank you!

URL Too Long vs. 301 Redirect
We have a small number of content pages where the urls paths were setup before we started looking really hard at SEO. The paths are longer than recommended (but not super crazy IMHO) and some of the pages get a decent amount of traffic. Moz suggests updating the URLs to make them shorter but I wonder if anyone has experience with the tradeoffs here. Is it better to mark those issues to be ignored and just use good URLs going forward or would you suggest updating the URLs to something shorter and implementing a 301 redirect?

YOAST Premium extensions vs Yoast SEO Free?
Considering buying the Yoast Premium extensions (or perhaps whole bundle) but trying to weigh up if its worth it or if the free version is comprehensive enough to do the job? Obviously paid has more features but is it worth the price tag? (I have 4 different websites) If anyone has a paid version of Yoast Premium pack and seen improvements with rankings, mark ups in google etc I would appreciate hearing your story! Thank you in advance

Does 301 vs 302 matter when dealing with "social signal"?
When looking at links and how search engines look at "social signal," does it matter if a link is 301 vs 302? In addition to that, if I build out my own short URL system that gets used for link redirects that include referral attributes, would/could I get penalized if I use 301 instead of 302?

Google bot vs google mobile bot
Hi everyone 🙂 I seriously hope you can come up with an idea to a solution for the problem below, cause I am kinda stuck 😕 Situation: A client of mine has a webshop located on a hosted server. The shop is made in a closed CMS, meaning that I have very limited options for changing the code. Limited access to pagehead and can within the CMS only use JavaScript and HTML. The only place I have access to a server-side language is in the root where a Defualt.asp file redirects the visitor to a specific folder where the webshop is located. The webshop have 2 "languages"/store views. One for normal browsers and google-bot and one for mobile browsers and google-mobile-bot.In the default.asp (asp classic). I do a test for user agent and redirect the user to one domain or the mobile, sub-domain. All good right? unfortunately not. Now we arrive at the core of the problem. Since the mobile shop was added on a later date, Google already had most of the pages from the shop in it's index. and apparently uses them as entrance pages to crawl the site with the mobile bot. Hence it never sees the default.asp (or outright ignores it).. and this causes as you might have guessed a huge pile of "Dub-content" Normally you would just place some user-agent detection in the page head and either throw Google a 301 or a rel-canon. But since I only have access to JavaScript and html in the page head, this cannot be done. I'm kinda running out of options quickly, so if anyone has an idea as to how the BEEP! I get Google to index the right domains for the right devices, please feel free to comment. 🙂 Any and all ideas are more then welcome.

The speed of my site do you agree with my hosting company
Hi my site is www.in2town.co.uk and i have to be honest i am not really happy at the moment. i took a huge gamble because my site was getting around 10,000 visitors per day but because the site was getting really slow as i was using the old joomla my hosting company suggested to me to use the modern version of joomla as i was using joomla 1.0 Now for months i said no but they said the site would remain slow until i updated it. I decided to take a gamble and as i was going to now move it to the new joomla i decided that i would redo the whole site and make it better which i am doing at the moment. But even though i am paying for a dedicated server and have done what they have said and using the new joomla and according to them they have refreshed my database the site is still running slow. If anyone could do a test on the site and let me know what speed they are getting. Below is the email i have sent to my hosting company and below is also the resonce that i am getting from them.- I would love to hear your feedback as i have taken a huge gamble and when i get back from spain i will be continuing the finish the site which will take me another week to complate and get it the way i want it. here is the feedback hi can you please look into my site www.in2town.co.uk as i am getting lots of reports that it is slow. we redone the whole site which i am still working on because of it being slow and you said that you cleared everything in my database so there was nothing there so we can start from scratch. when i started building the new site you said that the database would be like a brand new one but it seems that this is not working. what i mean by this is, we listened to you and got a dedicated server as you said this would make the site faster, this did not work, you said about redoing the site and using the latest joomla as this would make the site faster and after a lot of work we done this although we are still continuing to build it and as a result of this we lost lots of traffic and links and rankings but even though we done this the site is still slow. i have to be very honest with you, i am not happy and feel disapointed as the site is slow and i need this sorting out. i am in spain at the moment meeting clients ref the site and it is embarrassing when they say the site is slow so please can you look into this for me Hello, Thank you for contacting TMDHosting Technical Support Team. We have checked your current server load and it is below 1: top - 11:53:54 up 123 days, 9:47, 1 user, load average: 0.24, 0.12, 0.11 this is shows that the system is running fine. You have close to 1GB RAM free which provides enough resources for your scripts to function. As the server state is healthy the optimization of your website should be applied on its coding and main functions. This is a development related optimization and we do not offer development services at this point. If your developer recommends a server with more resources provide us with his/hers requirements and we will provide you with suitable solution. Should you have any further questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact us. Best regards, Gabriel Reed from me., i will have to have someone look into this as it may be a case that i will have to get rid of my dedicated server and take the sites to another hosting company and see the difference with them and see if the site is faster as no one else using joomla has the problems that i am having. can you let me know what speed the site is then, and then compare this against some other sites. for example, female first, claire hegarty.co.uk etc as when i do speed checks i am getting back over ten seconds and the site which is very small at the moment should not be more than 2 seconds Hello, Please note that even if you move the website to another hosting provider this will not change the reason because of which its speed is not as per your requirements. However it is up to you to explore different options. What we have ensured is that your server is not overloaded and it has resources for the functions on it to run. The optimization of your website coding I am afraid are outside of our technical the scope of our technical support. Additionally note that the loading speed of your website depends on huge number of other factors on certain remote locations which are not under our control. Should you have any further questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact us. Best regards, Gabriel Reed

TMDHosting.com If anyone can please comment on this and look at my site www.in2town.co.uk and test it for me on speed and advise me as i have done everything they have said and it seems that the site is no faster. There is not much content on there at the moment as they managed to lose over 20,000 pages of content while transfering it all which i am not happy about. So there should not be an issue on speed and now i am working through and putting some of the old content back on while writing new content0 -
Wordtracker vs Google Keyword Tool
When I find keyword opportunities in Wordtracker, I'll sometimes run them through Adwords Keyword tool only to find that Google says these keywords have 0 search volume. Would you use these keywords even though Google says users aren't searching for them?

Rankings for Home vs. Internal Pages - Potential 301?
Hi everyone: A site I'm working with until recently was ranking page 1 for its primary keyword. For the last month, they've dropped to page 4. One thing we've noticed is that the page that is ranking is an internal page (http://www.example.com/keyword-string) and at this point, everything ranking above us is ranking based on the root domain (http://www.competitor.com). We've eliminated Panda, penalties, and any other obvious causes for the drop in rankings. We have similar or better page rank, external links, domain trust, etc. in comparison to the sites still ranking page 1. We think this may be part of our problem. Has anyone else dealt with this? What did you do to change it and how did it work? We're considering eliminating the existing internal page and 301'ing to the home page. The keyword in question is the core of the business, so this is a natural change, but we're loath to lose years of investment in promoting the internal page. Also, the site was originally optimized with the primary keyword throughout (appears in META tags, headers on multiple pages). How important is it to clear these out to make Google see the home page as most relevant? Thanks!!
