Duplicate content problem
-
Hi, i have a serious problem. I work in joomla and sometimes it can be annoying. When you set up a category, you need to give it a name and maybe this is a huge error on my part as i did not really think about the names beforehand.
The situation i have now is, all my sections are in front page mode, but because you have to name the categories in order to write articles, i am now left with a load of blog sections such as http://www.in2town.co.uk/benidorm/benidorm-news
Now i have a main section called Benidorm news so i have duplicate sections, i want to know if i can redirect the http://www.in2town.co.uk/benidorm/benidorm-news to go to the main benidorm section or if there is a better way of doing it.
i have left this blod layout the way it is to show you, but the others i just have it where it shows the title and then goes to the article.
I work in k2 and would be grateful if anyone can let me know the solution to this as semoz is showing that i have many duplicate titles and content
many thanks

Diane, could you rephrase your statement in your first paragraph? You pressed good answer and it came up that you pressed good answer, I'm not sure what the problem is. But if there is a technical problem I'm happy to look into it.
Is tracking your keywords in your campaign no longer working? On our page about the standalone rank tracking app (which is coming back -- I have helped test it), we do note that you can use the manage keywords section of your campaign to track rankings. If this is not working, please let us know.

cheers for this. i may teach myself a new system to build websites in. thanks for your help. i will go through and read all these.

And, to add to my reply above...Since you are working on Joomla, the link below might be helpful to you:

Since it is difficult for me to diagnose your particular problem without having access to the root of the problem, and since this is more of a Webmaster problem, I would suggest that you explore/search or ask on these particular forums as well:

hi, i have this one here, http://www.in2town.co.uk/Showbiz-Gossip/max-clifford-denies-sex-abuse-allegations the showbiz-gossip use to be celebrity news category, but since trying to have the celebrity news redirect using 301 to this page http://www.in2town.co.uk/Showbiz-Gossip the category has decided to change its name to showbiz gossip and now causes a 404 error
not sure how to solve this, i am reading the info as enclosed but not sure why it has happened and how to sort out the other categories in the correct manner

It seems like you have configured your pages under your new category "Holiday-News" to display a 404. Where as all your pages under "News-Travel" are all alive. I think that instead of 301 re-directing all your old URLs to the new URLs somehow by mistake you 404'd your new URLs.
Anyway here are some links that might help you:
(1) http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php (How to do 301 re-directs)
(2)http://www.blog.web6.org/404-not-found-webmaster-tools-error-how-to-fix/ (Scroll down to the bottom where it says "Tutorial to fix 404")
(3) http://sixrevisions.com/website-management/find-remove-broken-links/ (How to remove broken links)
Hope this helps...let me know.

i tried everything that it said on the info, but i came across a problem. The problem is, i am now getting 404 errors. so for example
http://www.in2town.co.uk/Holiday-News/easyjet-offer-low-cost-flights-from-newcastle-to-amsterdam
the above article, the section it was under was news travel but since i redirected the blog section of news travel to holiday news which is here http://www.in2town.co.uk/Holiday-News it comes up with a 404 error and changes the section to holiday news.
this has happened with many other articles, instead of just trying one section as a 301 redirect in the htaccess file i decided to change four sections, pointing the blogs to the main sections. Now it seems i have hundreds of 404 errors. i have deleted the 301 redirects but they seem to stay redirected.
it is strange this has happened as i have not read it happening to anyone else

keri, yesterday i pressed good answer. now it seems to me there is a problem with your system as i pressed good answer yesterday and it came up that i pressed good answer.
I really think you need to sort out what is going on and while you are there, when is the rank tracker going to be fixed as all members are paying for tools and we should all get a rebate if one of them is not working, just saying.

Hi Diane,
Would you mind giving a "good answer" to answers like these that solve your problem? The person who answers gets a few more MozPoints and encouragement to keep answering questions, and the question gets marked as answered, which helps keep the system clean.
Thanks so much!

Thank you for this, this is amazing help and will solve my problem.

Removing old content
Ahoy! Variously I have heard the opinion that content which does not generate regular search traffic (let's ballpark it at >10 views in any given month) should be noindexed or even removed. Allegedly this would improve the overall quality of the site, rankings and traffic. I remain doubtful. What would you do if the interest in a given matter goes down over time for any (most) given topics of your content and is replaced by "newer" specific interest? Concrete example: I have a website about (book) reviews. Naturally, there will always be new books; old books are not in the media as much and "forgotten". Nevertheless, the reviews (all unique, based on really having read the books, no trace of the standard back cover copy) are obviously still there. Personally I feel that they do not really lose any value - they are still reviews of that one book, even though it is not the most recent one. So, what would you do: Deindex "older" book reviews after a certain time? Even remove them completely? Just let them run? I am looking forward to your opinions - and even your experience if you have done something like this! Nico

Hi, We are planning a full website redesign and rewriting the content of the key pages. The new contents will be ready sooner than the new website, what is the better solution? 1. Replace the content of the old site with the new (better) contents

Duplicate Content behind a Paywall
We have a website that is publicly visible. This website has content. We'd like to take that same content, put it on another website, behind a paywall. Since Google will not be able to crawl those pages behind the paywall is there any risk to ua doing this? Thanks! Mike

Duplicate Content on WordPress Blogs?
We are getting ready to add a WordPress blog to our established website. Our plans are to place it in a subfolder on our website to maximize rank. My question is...Do we need to utilize a Meta Robots WordPress plugin by Yoast or similar so that noindex, follow robots meta tags will prevent search engine indexing of search result pages, subpages and category archives? We want to avoid the dreaded Duplicate Content Error and penalty. Any other great SEO WordPress plugins? Thank you for your time. Brian

Is this Duplicate Content?
I searched a snippet of one of our Articles (in quotes) and got two results back in Google, one for the article on our site and one for our development/staging site. Does that mean that our development site is getting indexed by Google, even thought we "Disallow:/" in the robots.txt file? Is this a big duplicate content issue? Thanks
