Why does my site rank so badly
-
its my turn to ask the interminable question why does my site rank so badly?
site is: marriagerecords.org.uk.
it was #1 for 'marriage records' on google for about 6 months.
then it was 5th to 10th for about 2 months.
now it is nowhere for this phrase and anything else, none of the pages I have written rank for anything.
I have spent hours upon hours researching original content and I have got some great backlinks from sites like wrexham.gov.uk and somerset.gov.uk (some dont show in opensiteexplorer yet).
im guessing im over-optimizing something but i'd love some concrete fixes if anyone could suggest any.
thanks,
tom

thank you for the responses. i'll start with reducing the number of instances of marriage.
bounce rate is 40 to 45% which seems OK to me.

I agree with bstone81 as a starting point - i.e. reduce the number of instances of 'marriage' for example. We recently did some clean up on one of our primary terms which we'd been link building for but not seen must change. When we reduced the number of instances of our target term we say a huge jump.

Spammy keywords might be something to look at. Although you they are not high for "marriage records" it is used twice in your title tag, and the word marriage is used 49 times. I recently did some clean up on some of my pages that were kind of spammy with some keywords and saw an improvement.
So something to consider.

Since you just picked up the domain in 02/2012, remember that you picked it up and then all the big algorithm updates hit.
Since you went after an EMD (exact match domain), remember that Google has been decreasing its relevance recently: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/googles-emd-algo-update-early-data
Also, when I visit your site, the colors make it really hard for me to stay on the page. What is your bounce rate? There is a lot of speculation that you'll lose rankings for high bounce rates.
Additionally, the site really functions as a directory. And directories have been getting less and less good rankings (even DMOZ).

Hi Tom,
Just had a quick look over your site using the process we'd normally use at my work to assess why a site might be struggling and I think the link building portion of your SEO efforts is where you should start looking.
You're right in thinking you've got some great links on there such as the one you mentioned from wrexham.gov.uk but you're competing against some much stronger sites, the National Archives for example has a DA of 100. With other sites in the top 3 having DA's of 67 & 69 respectively. This is going to make it difficult for one great link to boost you to the top, you need to have several strong links to bolster your current profile. I would suggest breaking it down into targets of linking domains, from OTE i can see you're on 11 so make your first target 50 and so on.
Technically, i can't see any huge errors with your site. Are there any of the Google Algorithim updates which coincide with the drop you've seen in position?

How to create site map for large site (ecommerce type) that has 1000's if not 100,000 of pages.
I know this is kind of a newbie question but I am having an amazing amount of trouble creating a sitemap for our site Bestride.com. We just did a complete redesign (look and feel, functionality, the works) and now I am trying to create a site map. Most of the generators I have used "break" after reaching some number of pages. I am at a loss as to how to create the sitemap. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

My beta site (beta.website.com) has been inadvertently indexed. Its cached pages are taking traffic away from our real website (website.com). Should I just "NO INDEX" the entire beta site and if so, what's the best way to do this? Please advise.

Site verification in WMT
Hello all, I have a site and I want to set a preferred domain but when I do it says I need to verify my site but it gives me no ideas how to do that. I know that normally you have to do it when you set the account up but I had an analytics account for this domain first then just logged on with those details and I was in with no verification process. Cheers

Why is my site going from bad to worse in the SERPS?
I've been having issues ranking for the key word kayak fishing. At one point a few months ago I managed to get my site www.yakangler.com to page 2 but have since fallen back to page 20+. I thought it was because of keyword stuffing or over optimization so I made some tweaks to my home page and started to see a small daily rise but stopped at page 19. I have since slipped back to the top of page 24... What am I doing wrong? I don't employ any blackhat linking, I know I have some W3C validation errors on my home page "many caused by the facebook like button". Any ideas on how to improve my SERPS would be greatly appreciated. The most frustrating thing is comparing my site to the top Google searches for that key word... I should be doing fine definitely not page 24! Much gratitude in advance for any help you can offer!

Googlebot cannot access your site
"At the end of July I received a message in my Google webmaster tools saying "Googlebot can't access your site" We checked our robots.txt file and removed a line break in it, and then I had Google Fetch the file again. I have not received any more messages since then. When we created the website I wrote all of the content and optimized each page for about 1 local keyword. A few weeks after I checked my keywords and did have a few on the first page of google. Since then almost all of them have completely disappeared. Because we had not link building effort I would not expect to still be on the first page, but I should definitely be seeing them before the 5th or even 10th page of Google. The address is http://www.tile-pompanobeach.com I'm not sure if these horrible results have something to do with the message from Google or something else. The problem is this client now wants to sign a contract with us for SEO and I really have no Idea what happened and if I will be able to figure it out. The main keyword for my home page is tile pompano beach and I aslo was using Pompano Beach Tile store for the About page which was previously on the first page of Google. Does anyone have some input?

Time on site
From what I understand, if you search for a keyword say "blue widgets" and you click on a result, and then spend 10 seconds there, and go back to google and click on a different result google will track that first result as being not very relevant. What I don't understand is what happens when (and this happens all the time, i did it today) you click on a result go to that page, find it (not?) relevant and then get distracted, phone call, or someone calls you into another room in the office. You end up accidentally leaving the tab open all day long, and never go back to the google search. So your time on site to google is what? infinity? there must be an upper cap here? at some point they must say, ok, the user is gone, time on site = our maximum = 5 minutes?!? Get me? any insight?

Impact of 401s on Site Rankings
Will having 401s on a site negatively impact rankings? (e.g. 401s thrown from a social media sharing icon)
