Home Page Not Ranking... Need an EXPERT
-
Hi, for about a year now, our home page seems to have been "removed" from Google (except for our branded keywords). The home page is clearly indexed, but none of the keywords for the home page rank in the top 500 (again, except for our brand, trophycentral). Other pages in the site are fine and we rank in the top 10 positions for hundreds of keywords. We are also okay on Yahoo and Bing. So the issue is the home page from non-branded words. There have been no manual penalties, but since the words, such as trophies and trophies and awards are all but gone, something is going on. It has been almost exactly a year now and I have tried everything from removing backlinks (although I still can't tell which are "bad links", to changing titles, to improving speed and structure. I have had quite a few really nice people try to help, but their suggestions don't seem to work or are too vague. I really need an expert as the impact to the business of not having a home page performing is very damaging. Thank you!!!

Hi Matthew, thanks very much for your reply. I wish I knew where some of the bad backlinks came from - I have hired a couple of seo companies over the past 10 years but thought they were highly reputable. In terms of the dropped links over the last year, this was done after the problems with Google started. We had hundreds of links coming from two sources - our search provider who was saving search pages with our header, etc. and our hosting site where we store our engraving files, etc. I was actually pretty sure these were causing the problem, because there were over a thousand links from these two locations. I thought they might have viewed them as spam even though they were not, but removing them didn't seem to do anything.
Out of curiosilty, how were you able to see the change in links - is there a sw program that you recommend?
In terms of the new backlinks to the site, I "panicked" and started adding more (at the recommendation of someone on this site!) and hired network solutions to add us to more directories. I stopped the service last month. I also have been writing a bunch of articles and press releases.
Is there something that can help tell me which backlinks are "bad"?
Thanks again!

Thanks, Stephen. I will look at the links to see if I can increase the links back to the home page. In terms of the speed, there must have been something off on my site when you looked - it is slow, but using google webmaster tools appears to be much less (under 2 seconds). Thanks also for th referral to Alan...

Hello,
I will do my best to help you, but there are many reasons why you may not be rankings.
After doing a research I started to find links like this to your site http://www.casinoreviewpages.com/?category=Shopping_10
I can tell you that this isn't going to help do anything but hurt your site. I am not a trophy expert, but I know that trophies aren't relevant to casino reviews. I found many questionable links like this.
Not to mention the fact that you lost thousands of backlinks to your site in the past year.
I feel that your building to many backlinks per month to your site, and I don't feel the quality of your backlinks are good enough.
I highly recommend the following. I feel you should take a month or 2 and remove all bad links to your site. Run a detox report as a start. A detox will get some, but not all. Make sure you review all links from a detox report too, some are still good. I would then start to build high quality backlinks to your site.
It looks like your using some kind of software for submissions purposes too. I also seen very low quality writing to your site.
I recommend hiring good writers, find someone that is willing to manually submit, make sure that what is submitted is to relevant sites. I would also make sure that all sites submitted to are high quality and not just a submission to submit.
Did a SEO company do this for you? I know that we have never done anything like this before and am sure that what they did isn't very ethical or white hat, because none of the tactics used are in our playbook here. I would start only submitting to quality sites.
Have a great night and I hope this helps.

After giving it a cursory review, I drew a few conclusions:
you've got a lot of links but need a higher majority of them to go to the home page.
You've also got a really slow site: 13.2 seconds on the load time... that'll hurt you.
But at the end of the day, with all the work you've already done and all the help that you've received, you really don't need more people on forums trying to shoot in the dark... as you said: you need an expert. You need to hire a company to do a thorough and exhaustive site audit. Expect it to run $1k+. You need someone like Alan or any of the other excellent auditors that can help you get back on the right track and fast.

2 pages ranking for same keyword.. Need some advice on what to do.
Here's my question. When I first started my website we started Using keyword anchor building links To my homepage . Over the years Our business has expanded to more than just baby headbands. I now have a baby headband page. When tracking my rankings. I sometimes see Both pages in Google for the same keyword. Other days I do not see both of them. My question is Should I continue building links and keyword anchor text for the home page Or should I switch them and start building keyword-rich anchor text for my baby headband page. I'm just wondering if the Search engine is confused by the two. When searching for the keyword baby headbands. I will sometimes show up for eight and nine. 8 is my home page and 9 is for the baby headband page. I have always shown up for the keyword "baby Headbands" for my home page.

How to make my good sub-page rank ahead of my generic home page?
I have an ecommerce site for the clothes drying racks my family business makes, and it sells a few other laundry items also. It's about 5 years old. We used to rank on the first page for basic phrases like "clothes drying rack" and "umbrella clothesline". About 1.5 years ago we fell hard in the rankings. Since then "umbrella clothesline" has moved back to the first page, but "clothes drying rack" is stuck on the 3rd page and always with the result being the generic homepage instead of the good sub-page (which used to rank on the first page) that really shows-n-tells about our drying rack. Here are the three pages I am talking about. Home page = http://www.bestdryingrack.com/ Drying rack page = http://www.bestdryingrack.com/clothes-drying-rack-main.html and umbrella clothesline page = http://www.bestdryingrack.com/umbrella-clotheslines.html Any ideas on how to get the drying rack page to start ranking well again? (hopefully better than the generic homepage ranks) A little technical background: the Moz campaign on this site says that the home page has a PA = 42 with 190 LRD's and 344 external links. Both the umbrella clothesline page and the clothes drying rack page have almost equal statistics of PA = 35 with 20 LRD's and 23 external links. My anchor text distribution is maybe unbalanced. The drying rack page has 15 external links with the anchor of "Clothes Drying Rack". But the umbrella clothesline page has 14 external links with the anchor of "outdoor umbrella clothesline" and it ranks on the first page for that search. I can't figure out how to get OSE to tell me anchor text stats for just the homepage and not the whole site since www.bestdryingrack.com/index.html 301's to the plain www.bestdryingrack.com (if you know how, please share) What's wrong with my poor neglected clothes drying rack page? The only way I can get it to show up on the first page is to do a real specific search like "round wooden clothes drying rack" Your help could save a faltering family business. Thank you!

Effect of 302 redirects from empty parent page to sub page
A client's website has links to their service pages which then redirect (302 through a php "Location:" header) to that service's first sub-page. For example, our-services/service-x redirects to our-services/service-x/about-service-x I can only think this has been done because there is no actual content for the parent page and to maintain some kind of structure for navigation and URLs. Really there's no reason why the 'about-service-x' page can't be removed and its content transferred to the main 'service-x' page. Then the redirects can be removed also - it's not how a 302 should be used for a start. I'm just wondering what kind of effect this current redirection has on SEO, as I know 302s don't pass any link juice? Thanks for your help.

Does our new home page design look better and better for seo
Hi, i would like to know if our new design for our home www.in2town.co.uk page looks better than it did. We are trying to target the keyword for lifestyle magazine and lifestyle news. We are wondering if we should add more colour or graphics to the home page. we are going through each section of the site to make it a more enjoyable experience for our readers. If anyone can give us advice on keeping people on the page and using different social media techniques then that would be great. Through some excellent advice on here we are going to be starting a facebook page

Should i redirect my lost links to my home page
Hi, as some of you maybe aware, i had a major problem last year that has caused me nothing but trouble. in short, my hosting company lost me over 10,000 pages from my site and i had to rebuild the site from stratch which is still on going. I lost thousands of links to my site and i have been over the past week pointing the pages not found to the sections that is best suited to them. But i am just wondering if it would harm my site if i also point some of those links to my home page. I was a page rank four before disaster happened to my site and now i am a page rank two and i want to build this up. so i am just wondering if i should point some of those good links to my home page i am redirecting the pages using 301 in my htaccess file any advice would be great

Page not Accesible for crawler in on-page report
Hi All, We started using SEOMoz this week and ran into an issue regarding the crawler access in the on-page report module. The attached screen shot shows that the HTTP status is 200 but SEOMoz still says that the page is not accessible for crawlers. What could this be? Page in question
