Domain name selection + Branding
-
Hello All, Would like to understand the relation between selecting a domain name and the branding of ones organization.
Recently a friend came upto me and asked as to how he could select his domain name so that factors like seo visibility and uniqueness fall into place correctly. Is there some website which could permutate / combine few keywords and suggest domain names. Also help in deciding whether selecting that domain name would be advantegous over other or not.
Common names like cart , food, vacation etc if names formed keeping these in between as domain names could cause issues where in a lot of influential names could pop up on the searches and make your domain irrelavant.
Any ideas how to overcome this problem

Hello Aditya,
I want to recap your question to make sure I understand it correctly.
You're asking for a tool that suggest domain names based off of keywords, but you also are worried about selecting a keyword based domain because you are going to compete with other industry domains.
If this is correct.. I'm not sure of a tool that does this specifically that, but you could use a combination of tools to get the results. First I would use Google's Keyword Suggestion Tool (it is a tool in Adwords) to find industry keywords, and then use a web hosting services signup page like BlueHost.com type in a domain and let it suggest available domains.
That being said, Google has devalued some of the benefits of keyword named domains (EMD, PMD) we have a good post about that here on Seomoz.org about the recent Exact Match, and Partial Match domains.
The last part of your question was about how you deal with similar companies with the same name, I would suggest going unique by using a unique brand name, or brand name and a keyword like examples...
Brand
Zuppys.com
Partial Match
ZuppysFood.comI hope that helps

Domain keyword ranking
I used to use Searchmetrics (years ago) which enabled me to add in the domain name into their website, and it would provide all the keywords that rank for it. Does Moz do that do you know? Thanks

How do you create landing pages with different domains?
I am wondering how do I create landing pages with differing domains? We recently acquired some other domains that will hopefully help with our SEO, Key Word targeting. I understand how to create the landing page but I don't know how to link it to our other domain. I was thinking about a rel canonical but will that defeat the purpose of the landing page, in terms of ranking? I guess the issue that I am facing is when we start up these new domains they will not have the Domain Authority or the Page Authority of our main site. I would like to try and get them ranked organically as well as PPC. Thanks.

When is it wrong to use a competitors brand name?
I recently started with a company who've benefited from using a competitors brand name to explain why theirs is superior. They're not wrong and neither have they been derogatory, however they have had significant traffic to their website using the competitors branded search terms. I'm concerned Google will penalise us for this (if so can you point me to case studies/similar examples), or am I worrying unnecessarily?

Domain Change, Lost ranking on 1 keyword
Hey guys, Long time follower of the Q&A forum, but don't post too often. I'm having an issue I never came across. We changed a domain from mpbuilderscincy.com to mpcincinnati.com. We did the 301 redirect and all the SEO flowed through pretty well. Most pages didn't even change in file structure so we didn't need to do page redirects for the most part. Anyway, long story short, we are seeing the same rankings as we had before now (it's been about 2 months) except for 1 and only 1 keyword. It's "Home Remodeling Cincinnati". We dropped from page 2, to page 11 on Google and it won't budge. Now on Yahoo and Bing, we are right back where we were before already with that keyword. But Google just refuses to bump us back to where we were before the change. The Home Remodeling page: http://www.mpcincinnati.com/Residential-Services/Home-Remodeling.aspx has an on page grade of A for that keyword and we have it as one of our main keywords on the home page of the site (title, h1, alt tags, etc). No errors on the page. I mean it looks pretty clean for this page as far as SEO except for 1 notice that mentions the 301 canonical redirect. We uploaded the new sitemap right away. I just can't put a thumb on it and wondering if you guys had any tips. Thanks, Chris

Hey All, Quick question regarding have your brand in your title 2+ times unnaturally; is this not keyword stuffing? Example: BRAND product this that | BRAND - for almost every product? Other titles are BRAND product | BRAND Keyword | Brand. - looks like a CMS issue. Going through all of a clients titles and want your opinion!! Thanks !

Is the order placement of a city name in title tag very important?
Is "Austin Plumbers" much different than "Plumbers Austin" in the eyes of the search engine and best practices? I would think that Plumbers Austin would have more search volume. But Austin Plumbers is easier to work in to sentences in the body. Does Google sees them as the same? Is it ok to use Plumbers Austin in the title tag and use Austin Plumbers in the body or should I choose one target phrase and stick with just that? If so should the city name come first or last?

Keyword domain names
My two best key words are "gps tracking" and "vehicle tracking". For the Irish market I have got the two domain names: www.vehicletracking.ie www.gpstracking.ie Have a very poor landing page on www.vehicletracking.ie and just redirecting www.gpstracking.ie to our site. I am wondering what I should do thie these two assets? Should I be running them as micro sites? re directing them? Or something else? Let me know what you think. Andrew
