Best way to duplicate a wordpress site for staging purposes?
-
I want to make some changes to my Wordpress site, and want to somehow set up a live staging area. Does anyone know of a good way to do this?
I want all of the same content there I just want to be able to make changes to it and try it all out before going live. Any thoughts on this?
Also I want to be sure the staging site doesn't get indexed since it will be a complete duplicate of my existing site.
Thanks!

Howdy,
I've recently become a fan of WPengine for this reason - they've got some neat staging features, including, I believe, being able to stage changes, check them out, and push them live. But, that would probably require you to change hosting.
That said, here's how I tend to move sites from development to production (or production to development). Someone who knows more might have some changes or suggestions, or an easier way, but this is what works for me:
-
Install WordPress somewhere. Make sure its noindexed and/or password protect the directory.
-
Download a copy of your wp-content folder from your existing site (this will pull all of your themes, plugins, etc.)
-
Export a copy of your wordpress database (how to here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database)
-
Open up your database in a text editor (I like Notepad++) and locate the first instance of your old domain name with the new one and then use find and replace to switch out all instances of the old domain name for the new one e.g. if it's noahsdad.com/ and you're moving to dev.noahsdad.com/ use find and replace to switch all occurances of noahsdad.com/ to dev.noahsdad.com/. Be careful to look at trailing slashes etc.
-
Upload your wp-content file to the new wordpress install. Overwrite the old one.
-
Open the database for the fresh WP install using PHPmyadmin (or the equivalent, on your server). Import the database that you conducted the search/replace on.
The advantage of uploading the wp-content folders and then then database is that the Database changes while the files for plugins etc. are already in place. Therefore, it should retain many of the plugin settings so you won't get any serious weirdness due to an important plugin not working.
Here's a guide that I like http://wpmu.org/migrating-wordpress-to-a-new-server/. It doesn't conform exactly to the method I use (they upload the database first), and it has some extra stuff in it like updating your nameservers which you should ignore, but it covers the database part pretty nicely.
Hope this helps.

Thanks so much. I actually don't need any other staff people to see it. I just want some designers in other parts of the U.S. to see it.
The main this is how to duplicate it. Including all of the images, database, etc.
I've never done anything like this before.
Thanks.

OK, then use the subdomain, you can then set up with dreamweaver a check in/out system for your staff which stops people editing the same files etc. On save/put you can set it to upload it to your testing server (subdomain). you would then be able to view this from any machine in your office (i would also still block all IPs on that subdomain except for your office). Once happy you can then either upload the specific files then to the main server, or do a release every evening/other evening after testing etc.

I'm actually on a mac.
If I install it locally on my mac I can't let other people see it unless they are looking at my computer, correct?
I have other domains...would be better to use one of those, or to use a subdomain?
Thanks.

If you're on Windows, you can locally install xampp on your machine, and then install wordpress locally.
Or you can do what columK suggests and install it on a subdomain on your site. Here is info from wordpress about moving domains - you can also install a plugin to do this - I've used Wordpress Move in the past
Once you've set up the new site, go to the settings section, reading, and then click the checkbox to discourage search engines from reading the testing site - that will modify the robots.txt to block search engines.
Good luck!

That's what I need help trying to create. I also want the staging site to be a duplicate of the existing site, but there so much content I can't do a simple import / export through Wodpress's admin panel...

Why not create a subdomain that only your office IP can view? You can then test as much as you like without worrying about other people viewing it or Google.

I need help on how best to do a complicated site migration. Replacing certain pages with all new content and tools, and keeping the same URL's. The rest just need to disappear safely. Somehow.
I'm completely rebranding a website but keeping the same domain. All content will be replaced and it will use a different theme and mostly new plugins. I've been building the new site as a different site in Dev mode on WPEngine. This means it currently has a made-up domain that needs to replace the current site. I know I need to somehow redirect the content from the old version of the site. But I'm never going to use that content again. (I could transfer it to be a Dev site for the current domain and automatically replace it with the click of a button - just as another option.) What's the best way to replace blahblah.com with a completely new blahblah.com if I'm not using any of the old content? There are only about 4 URL'st, such as blahblah.com/contact hat will remain the same - with all content replaced. There are about 100 URL's that will no longer be in use or have any part of them ever used again. Can this be done safely?

Indexed Pages Different when I perform a "site:Google.com" site search - why?
My client has an ecommerce website with approx. 300,000 URLs (a lot of these are parameters blocked by the spiders thru meta robots tag). There are 9,000 "true" URLs being submitted to Google Search Console, Google says they are indexing 8,000 of them. Here's the weird part - When I do a "site:website" function search in Google, it says Google is indexing 2.2 million pages on the URL, but I am unable to view past page 14 of the SERPs. It just stops showing results and I don't even get a "the next results are duplicate results" message." What is happening? Why does Google say they are indexing 2.2 million URLs, but then won't show me more than 140 pages they are indexing? Thank you so much for your help, I tried looking for the answer and I know this is the best place to ask!

Building a product clients will integrate into their sites: What is the best way to utilize my clients' unique domain names?
I'm designing a hosted product my clients will integrate into their websites, their end users would access it via my clients' customer-facing websites. It is a product my clients pay for which provides a service to their end users, who would have to login to my product via a link provided by my clients. Most clients would choose to incorporate this link prominently on their home page and site nav.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | emzeegee
All clients will be in the same vertical market, so their sites will be keyword rich and related to my site.
Many may even be .org and ,edus The way I see it, there are three main ways I could set this up within the product.
I want to know which is most beneficial, or if I'm missing anything. 1: They set up a subdomain at their domain that serves content from my domain product.theirdomain.com would render content from mydomain.com's database.
product.theirdomain.com could have footer and/or other no-follow links to mydomain.com with target keywords The risk I see here is having hundreds of sites with the same target keyword linking back to my domain.
This may be the worst option, as I'm not sure about if the nofollow will help, because I know Google considers this kind of link to be a link scheme: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en 2: They link to a subdomain on mydomain.com from their nav/site
Their nav would include an actual link to product.mydomain.com/theircompanyname
Each client would have a different "theircompanyname" link.
They would decide and/or create their link method (graphic, presence of alt tag, text, what text, etc).
I would have no control aside from requiring them to link to that url on my server. 3: They link to a subdirectory on mydomain.com from their nav/site
Their nav would include an actual link to mydomain.com/product/theircompanyname
Each client would have a different "theircompanyname" link.
They would decide and/or create their link method (graphic, presence of alt tag, text, what text, etc).
I would have no control aside from requiring them to link to that url on my server. In all scenarios, my marketing content would be set up around mydomain.com both as static content and a blog directory, all with SEO attractive url slugs. I'm leaning towards option 3, but would like input!0 -
Hacked Wordpress Site! So many 404s
So I had a site that I worked on get hacked. We eliminated the URLs, found the vulnerability (Bluehost!) and rolled back the site. BUT they got into the Google Search Console and indexed a LOT of pages. These pages are now 404 errors and I asked the robots.txt file to make them noindex. The problem is that Google is placing a "this site may be hacked" on the search listing. I asked Google to reevaluate it and it was approved by there are still 80,000 404 errors being shown and it still believes that the uploaded files that we deleted should be showing. Doing a site search STILL shows the infected pages though and it has been a month. Any insight would definitely be helpful. Thanks!

Legal Client Wants to Change Domain Name... What's the best way to pass authority from old domain?
Hey Mozzers,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | WhiteboardCreations
I received a call on Friday from a 6 attorney law office who have been my client for a long time. They have an established brand/domain in their market which isn't very big, but has a lot of competition. 2 of the attorneys are leaving to start their own firm and they want to remove a letter from their name abbreviation, thus their domain name as well. So, the other partners want to change the domain to reflect this. They want to buy a EMD [city]lawyers.com for about $1,600 along with some others to protect their new brand and name. I have a good idea as to what I need to do, BUT would love to hear advice from the community for this type of drastic change. 301 redirects? New Google Analytics code or same just different profile? Webmasters verifications? Content from old site? Old domain forwarding or keep active for a little bit? Is not the time to get them an SSL? Also, what should I prepare them for in terms of website traffic expectations and Google authority drops or remains the same? I know their Moz DA/PA will drop to 1/1, but anything else to look out for? Thank you in advance!

Best practice for duplicate website content: same root domain name but different extension
Hi there I have a new client who has two websites: http://www.bayofislandsteambuilding.co.nz
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | turnbullholdingsltd
http://www.bayofislandsteambuilding.org.nz They are the same in every regard apart from the domain extension (.co.nz & .org.nz) which is likely to be causing them issues with Google ranking given the huge amount of duplicate content. What is the best practice approach to fixing this? Normally, if I was starting from scratch, I would set one of the extensions as an alias which redirects to the main domain. Thanks in advance. What's the best way to phase in a complete site redesign?
Our client is in the planning stages of a site redesign that includes moving platforms. The new site will be rolled out in different phases throughout a period of a year. They are planning to put the new site redesign on a subdomain (i.e. www2.website.com) during the roll out of the different phases while eventually switching the new site back over to the www domain once all the phases are complete. We’re afraid that having the new site on the www2 domain will hurt SEO. For example, if their first phase is rolling out a new system to customize a product design and this new design system is hosted on www2.website.com/customize, when a customer picks a product to customize they’ll be linked to www2.website.com/customize instead of the original www.website.com/customize. The old website will start to get phased out as more and more of the new website is completed and users will be directed to www2. Once the entire redesign is completed, the old platform can be removed and the new website moved back to the www subdomian. Is there a better way of rolling out a website redesign in phases and not have it hosted on a different subdomain?
