Local search results appearing above Organic
-
Hello,
I've just performed a search for the query 'outdoor clothing' using Google Incognito mode and I've added the screenshots below to show my findings. The first attempt at the search only showed local results then when I clicked search again adverts were shown.
I found this very odd, normally I'd see the local results after the 3rd of 4th organic result.Have Google changed their algorithm or is this just random?

I noticed this with one of my clients who is a real estate agent. Our placement stayed the same, but the organic has now blended in with the local result. One big down side right now is that it cuts our Title tag in half because the Local result is shorter.

Hi Dan, My guess from your question is that you may be a virtual business competing against local businesses for your specified search term. As you've probably seen over the past few years, Google is placing increased emphasis on their local results whenever they believe a search may have a local intent. Your search term could definitely have a local intent, so this is Google's reason for showing these local businesses. You are correct that one of Google's displays is to show their local results below 1-3 organic results. But, another quite common display is for the local results to be first on the page. This is what is showing in your first link. If you saw the display for this kw phrase go from one type to the other, that is just a sign of Google's constant changes to their presentation of data. It could stay the way it is today, or change tomorrow. So, for virtual businesses who do not qualify for inclusion due to lack of physical location, results like these can be a huge drag. But for local business owners, they are great. Google's goal is to present the information they believe will be most relevant and helpful to the user. In the case you've cited, Google has decided that more people want local results than organic ones, presumably.

Noticed it too and it absolutely sucks. Don't expect Google to change it any time soon.
Two ways to act on this - make sure that your Google+ local is down to a tee, first of all. Second, start targetting those keywords without those map results.
It may well be that those keywords end up being more long-tail/better converters anyway, like buy outdoor clothing.
Keep an eye on this SERP and analytics - if the map maintains its place, see if that has a reflection on your traffic and conversion (provided you maintain your organic ranking). It may be worth maintaining optimisation for the term if people are as annoyed as you and I by the maps and scroll right past them.

How do I authenticate a script with Search Console API to pull data
In regards to this article, https://moz.com/blog/how-to-get-search-console-data-api-python I've gotten all the way to the part where I need to authenticate the script to run. I give access to GSC and the local host code comes up. In the article, it says to grab the portion between = and #, but that doesnt seem to be the case anymore. This is what comes up in the browser http://localhost/?code=4/igAqIfNQFWkpKyK6c0im0Eop9soZiztnftEcorzcr3vOnad6iyhdo3DnDT1-3YFtvoG3BgHko4n1adndpLqjXEE&scope=https://www.googleapis.com/auth/webmasters.readonly When I put portions of it in, it always comes back with an error. Help!

Google Search Console Not Sending Messages
One of our sites received a Manual Penalty for unnatural links by Google. However, we never received a message in Google Search Console or an email about the manual action. The only reason we knew about the penalty is by the obvious drop in rankings, then signing into search console to look for any manual actions, which we found. Since then, we have submitted a disavow file and a reconsideration request. However, once again we did not receive an email or message in search console that shows confirmation of the disavow or that they received the reconsideration request. The disavow file does show up after I upload it, and it says it was successfully uploaded... but no messages or emails. After many hours of investigating the various canonical versions of our website on Search Console, we found out that there were several “owners” of the various canonical versions of our site that had “could not find the email address” as a site owner. We found out that these were previous employees who no longer worked with the company and their email address was deleted. After unverifying these site owners, (all the ones that had “could not find the email address” as the site owner), the notifications, emails and messages in Search Console started to appear. However, the only place they did not appear, is the main canonical version of our site. Of course, the main canonical version of our site (https://www) is the version that we uploaded the disavow and reconsideration request. This is the canonical version of the site that we need to receive these messages to know if our reconsideration request was granted! We’ve just reuploaded the disavow file and reconsideration request to all of the other canonical versions (2 of the 3 received the message about the penalty)…. and we are currently awaiting a response. Has anybody else had problems with not receiving notifications in search console due to deleted email addresses?

Why is my entire page appearing as a video result (and only a video result)?
A page on my site is appearing as a video result. When you click on the link, it takes you to the page. The page does have a video on it, but it seems weird that the entire page would appear as (and only as) a video...

Product Descriptions for Localized eCommerce Store
Hi, We currently have an eCommerce store that only sells in one country. We are going to open separate stores that will target different countries. As far as product descriptions go my initial plan was to use the same descriptions but then block product pages from being indexed. However this has also ended up blocking us from being able to use Google's product listing ads (it rejects the data feed due to not being able to index the products). Is there a way to copy the descriptions and avoid a delicate content issues without blocking our product pages from being indexed? Thanks for your help!

What I doing wrong when trying to search for links from external websites to my website
This is just the little frustrating question nothing important but I’m sure somebody will know the answer. In the white board Friday this week Rand suggested at one point that when you’re searching for results links to your website if you put a - followed by site followed by your url like –site:yourwebsite.com you get the results of pages with links on other websites but excluding your own webpages but it just doesn’t work I get no results just an error message, any idea why? If I remove the - I get tons of results but there on my own webpages……….

How can i get the Authors photo to show in the Google search result?
I added the rel="author" tags to the blog posts last week and updated the authors page with a link to the Google+ account, but I have yet to see the authors photo surface in the Google Results. Example URL: http://spotlight.vitals.com/2011/10/dr-richelle-cooper-testifies-against-dr-conrad-murray-in-trial/ Can anyone identify what else needs to be done?

Optimising multiple pages for the same search term
We were having a discussion on title tags and optimising multiple pages for the same term. We rank well for the phrase 'chanel glasses' which points to our Chanel brand page. The Chanel brand page is optimised for this term, and has the phrase 'Chanel glasses' at the front of its title tag. Previously, the title tag on our home page had the words 'Chanel glasses' at the start in an attempt to rank twice for the term (as one of our competitors has managed). This never worked (though at the time, our DA/PA was lower than it is now). For this reason I switched the title tag on the homepage to try and rank for 'designer glasses'. My belief is, given we already rank highly for the term on a more relevant landing page, trying to rank for it again on the home page is not the best use of a title tag on our highest PA page. We may as well use it for something more generic like 'designer glasses' (though this term does not convert nearly as well, nor does it currently rank as well for us as we've not been attempting to get 'designer glasses' as anchor text. Plus it's more competitive. Another generic term maybe be preferable). My colleague's view is we should attempt to do what our competitor has done and try and rank twice on page one for this term. I like the idea of dominating the top results, but I feel that since attempting to get double-listed hasn't worked for us so far, we should use the homepage for optimising for a different term ( ideally something that we don't already rank for elsewhere on the site). I see his point of view - if we were ranking nowhere for the search term then, yes we should concentrate on getting one page to rank, not two. But since we already rank well for the term, perhaps his strategy is preferable? Just for clarity, the title tags are not duplicate, but the idea was to share many of the same keywords between the two title tags. What are your thoughts SEOmoz?
