Are there advantages of switching Websites to a private IP from an IP shared on a Webserver?
-
I just did a reverse IP Lookup for both my sites and noticed they were on shared WebServers with 370 and 719 domains respectively. A few domains hosted on each IP looked very suspicious too.
Is there an advantage of switching my websites to a private IP from an IP shared on a Webserver?

Exactly the type of information I was seeking. Thanks so much Cyrus!

Hi Anita,
Great question! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to address it.
98-99% of the time, it should make no difference whether you are on a shared hosting environment with dynamic IPs or if your on a dedicated server with a dedicated IP, or any combination of these.
There are a few, rare exceptions:
-
The shared server is very slow. This isn't a shared issue per se, but more of a general hosting concern. You shouldn't have this with most decent host, but if your server is mis-configured and your content takes a long time to load, this could impact your SEO.

"Search engines don't want to overburden sites when they crawl them. To minimize this, they cluster sites by IP address and, if they detect a problem on one site, they reduce the crawl rate on all sites sharing that IP." Source - http://blog.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-and-seo
Most of the time you don't need to worry about this, but if Google reduces your crawling frequency because of problem sites on your IP, this may give you cause to worry.

Linking to bad neighborhoods. I assume this doesn't apply to you, but when Google finds a bunch of sites on the same IP that all link to each other suspiciously, this isn't good.
I don't mean to over-state these issues. Like I said, 99% of the time it isn't a problem. More important is making sure you're with a quality hosting company. Another alternative that I'm personally a fan of is using Cloudflare. I won't go into the specifics, but his is a free, virtual CDN that both speeds up your site and offers you extra security.
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your website.

Redirecting Old Websites to New Websites
Hi Everyone, We are about to take down a number of websites in favour of a new singular B2B hub and would be looking to redirect all of these sites to the new home. For SEO purposes, what would be the best way to do this? Due to the difference in setups and scale of the site, it would be difficult to correctly match up each page to page between the sites for individual 301 redirects. Could someone advise on the best plan of action? Thanks.

Canonicalized Website
We are new to SEO MOZ, and as we are doing our evaluation, multiple page problems have arisen. Our domain is www.moxicopy.com and www.moxicopy.com/blog. Our blog is wordpress hosted but integrated into our site. As we ran our analytics from MOZ PRO, we got TONS of Duplicate Page Title and Duplicate Page Content warnings, over 90 each. Most seem to come from our blog and our different products (we are an ecommerce website). Would the canonicalization of the pages be the cause? And couuld someone further explain exactly what canonical/canonicalization is>? I am very confused, and have a feeling that this is what has hurt our site so much in the last 2-3 weeks

Google and private networks?
I have one or two competitors (in the UK) in my field who buy expired 1 - 8 year old domains on random subjects (SEO, travel, health you name it) and they are in the printing business and they stick 1 - 2 articles (unrelated to what was on there before) on these and that's it. I think they stick with PA and DA above 30 and most have 10 – 100 links so well used expired domains, hosted in the USA and most have different Ip’s although they now have that many (over 70% of their backlink profile) that some have the same ip. On further investigation none of the blogs have any contact details but it does look like they have been a little smart here and added content to the about us (similar to I use to run xxx but now do xxx) also they have one or two tabs with content on (article length) that is on the same subject they use to do and the titles are all the same content. So basically they are finding expired 1 – 10 year old domains that have only been expired (from what I can see) 6 months max and putting 1 – 2 articles on the home page in relation with print (maybe adding a third on the subject the blog use to cover), add 1 – 3 articles via tabs at the top on subjects the sites use to cover, registering the details via xbybssgcf@whoisprivacyprotect.com and that’s it. They have been ranking via this method for the last couple of years (through all the Google updates) and still do extremely well. Does Google not have any way to combat link networks other than the stupid stuff such as public link networks, it just seems that if you know what you are doing you get away, if your big enough you get away with it but the middle of the ground (mum and pop sites) get F*** over with spam pointing to there site that no spammer would dream of doing anyway?

Separate IP Address for Blog
Our developers are recommending we sign up for a cloud based LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, & PHP) server to install 3rd party software (Wordpress). They said "the blog will be on a separate IP address and potentially can have some impact with SEM/SEO." Can anyone expand on what impact this might have versus having it on the same IP?
