I'm thinking about buying a competitor and 301 redirecting? How much SEO value?
-
I'm thinking about buying a competitor and 301 redirecting their site to mine. The high level stats are as follows. My site has a DA of 46 and the homepage has a PA of 55. 375 root domains, 170,000 links. The site sells millions of dollars worth of product each year. The competitor (who I had never heard of) has a DA of 58 and a homepage PA of 64. They have 634 root domains and 260,000 links. They aren't selling much of anything (less than 100,000 per year). We might be able to operate their site but I'm concerned about maintaining 2 platforms. My question is about the value of buying this site and 301 redirecting it to my site. Would this create long term SEO value or not? Any examples that have been documented are greatly appreciated.

I would buy it and keep it as a separate site. If he's buying links it might get penalized eventually so i would look to see how shady the links are and anchor text percentages before buying and ask to see their GA account so you can see if their traffic has remained strong.
301'ing a site that has been doing grey hat link building to your white hat site, i probably wouldn't do that.

Well in the first case with my competitor that 301'd to a new site, absolutely, that was almost a year ago, and they are still sittin' just fine.
It does sound like a good buy, since your site is less powerful, but then again, it would depend on the link profile of the sites in question.
If you have a really clean profile, and they have a messy one, you might lose some value of having your site completely "virgin" if you will, to any spam.
Also, even though they have a higher DA, do they actually rank higher than you for any phrases?
If so, how many, and how valueable are they?
-
We rank first page for nearly every phrase we want. However, competitors of ours that have been actively buying links are still being rewarded and it has hurt us a little in the last year. We used to be 2-5 for our key phrases. Now we are more like 3-7 for hundreds of phrases. Is there any evidence that buying a domain with a lot of relevant backlinks and redirecting has created long term value?

I have a competitor that bought a site that we had the chance to buy, and they jumped to the top of the search engines (keyword difficulty of 55), and the results were overnight.
In their case they bought a brand new domain, and 301 redirected the site to the new domain.
On the other hand, Another company of mine has a 301 redirect from another site, and we still struggle to rank....
How well are you ranking without the 301?
If it is the difference between average spot 10's for your target keywords, and average spot of 1-5, then you should probably jump all over it...

We're looking at providing SEO for a website that has the majority of its incoming links from websites created solely to provide links. Few have bad spam rankings. How worried should I be about those links?
The majority of incoming links to a prospect's website are from website pages apparently created solely to provide links to the website. Few have high spam scores. The sites linking to the main site have versions of blogs with linked text. They seem to be providing positive SEO value now, but I'm concerned they might get noticed and hurt the main site in the future.

Are Sidebar Backlinks worth for SEO?
Hello! Let's use the following example: I have a blog (let's call it Blog A) and I find another blog in the same niche (this will be Blog B) that has higher DA and PA than mine. Will Google penalize me if the Blog B puts a link to my blog in their sidebar? Remember, the Blog A and Blog B are from the same niche. I ask this because Google says that links on sidebars appears in every page and in some pages the link may be useless. But if both blogs are from the same niche, there won't be pages where the links will be from different themes and with less relevance. So, is my thought correct: we can use sidebar links without caring about penalization ONLY if the blogs are from the same niche? Thanks in advance!

Affiliate Links & SEO
Hi Looking at my backlink profile I noticed that I had 150 links coming from one site. Ahhhh I thought in light if the recent Penguin updates. Upon closer inspection I noticed that my link is only on the homepage of that site but because that site sells its product via clickbank they have got loads of versions of that site because of its affiliates. For example: MAINSITE is www.mainsite.com then there are 150 affiliates using hoplinks via clickbank so its: www.mainsite.com?hopmrbig www.mainsite.com?blablahblah etc etc The question: Will this hurt me? In theory I got 1 link on their homepage but will Google see it as 150 versions of the same site? Your thoughts please? SMP

Negative SEO
It looks like either opensiteexplorer is broken or two of our domains are being spammed via negative seo with very low quality links:

http://winter.bergleben.at is a project pretty new in development. Last time I checked we had 39 linking root domains. Now - couple of weeks later - we have more than 800 linking root domains. Most of them very dubious ones. Problem is: the link anchors look correct of what we or a user would typically link to most of the URLs identified by OSE I cannot even find a link back to us on there If it weren`t for the correct link anchors I would consider something wrong with OSE.
Another URL affected is www.skiinfo.de We are very proud of our quality and organic approach to editorial journalism, but we are in a very competitive field, so I would not be surprised if someone would apply negative SEO against us. Can someone briefly look into it and tell me if they came up with the same issue?0 -
I'm interested in knowing link building strategies for regional businesses.
I'm not just interested in sites to target, but also how to manage anchor text when you are targeting phrases that include a keyword + a geo modifier. Thanks!
