Too many links on product pages
-
Hello,
What do you do if there are too many links on product pages? With 18 products per page, there's 2 links per product for 120 links on many pages. There's 50 products in many categories, categories are at most 1 click from the home page.
Should we use pagination or not?
Thanks

Very helpful Dana,
Sorry you have the flu.

Hi Bob,
You are welcome and I apologize for taking so long to respond here but I have the flu
I don't think you need to worry about Google stopping at 100 and not indexing the rest. As long as you have a sitemap you can always submit that via Google Webmaster Tools and Google should find everything from that. If you're site is gi-normour, you may want to submit two sitemaps, one for categories and one for products.
Also remember that you can use "Fetch as Googlebot" in GWT a certain number of times per month. If you have a new product, or a page that has siginificantly changes, this is a great way to let Google know that it would be a good idea to crawl that page. You can select that Google just looks at that one page, or crawls also all of the pages that page links to.
You can monitor your crawl and index reports in GWT. There you can see exactly how many pages out of your sitemap Google has selected to include in the index. If you are ranging at 80% or better, you are doing well. If it's below that, you might want to research duplicate content issues or other problems causing Google not to select more pages.
Hope that helps!
Dana

What did you think about the indexing issue, Dana?
-
Hi Dana,
Thanks for the clear answer.
To answer your question, here's what's prompting my question:
I'm concerned that if Google only indexes the first 100 links then the products down below the 100th link might not get indexed.
That's the only concern
Also, although most categories have 30-50 products, one of our categories has 1200 products and I'd like to keep them all indexed. They're not broken up into categories and we've found that they're always found (even when we had them broken up) by long-tail searches.
Thank Dana.

Hi BobGW,
Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. Google's own tests have proved that users would rather scroll through large amounts of content than move from one page to another due to latency issues. I assume you are talking about a fairly large e-commerce site. This kind of scenario is common in e-commerce Once you add the links in the header, footer, associated products, recommended products, etc. I honestly wouldn't worry about it. However, in the interests of always improving, and if it's possible, try changing one of your category pages to using pagination, preferably one with decent traffic but lower page authority. Make the change and determine if there is any impact, positive or negative.
IMHO, I think it's better that you've kept your products higher up in the structure.
I s the only thing prompting you to think about making a change a report from Google that there are too many links on a page? Or are you thinking about changing it based on real problems with the site?
Curious to know as I am very interested in pagination issues.
Dana

How do you make product pages unique when there are thousands of products?
When an ecommerce site has 200 product pages, this is fine. It's time consuming, but I can write 200 unique paragraphs describing the product and it's not an insane amount of work for one person. But when there are 10,000+ product pages... what is the best way for one person to go about this? Risk the page being thin and just bullet point a couple of "need-to-know" info bits, or take the time to prioritise what products could benefit the most from the unique content and get cracking with a paragraph for each? Or do you just forego having truly unique copy on each product page and just aim to optimise the category pages for the longtail? Just wondering how you guys deal with thousands of product pages really. Starting to feel as if I should re-evaluate my strategy and wanted to get some idea on what others are doing... Notes: Product pages already have reviews, helps with adding more unique user-generated content to each page. There's dynamic content e.g. "You may be interested in...", "Related products", etc.

Nofollow links to own website pages
To preserve link juice should I "nofollow" links to about us and contact us pages that appear at the top of our navigation? I read this article - but I am not familiar with the authenticity: http://www.eminentseo.com/blog/navigation-menu-optimization-best-practices/ Thanks Mike

Issues with Product Pages Getting Index In Google
I just started working here the other week and one of the big issue is that a lot of the product pages are not getting index in google. We have an xml.gz site map they submitted a long time ago. My guess is it might be something with not enough content on the pages? Here are a few example of pages that are not getting index in google. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/43/-/439/716/-/33097/Alpinestars-Dual-Motorcycle-Gloves http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/47/-/201/803/-/28948/Camelbak-Blowfish-2013 http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/46/-/203/836/-/6996/MSR-Head-Case http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/44/54/208/764/80/1220/Galfer-Brake-Pad-Sintered-Metal There are 100's that are not indexed just trying to figure out what we need to do! We are working on new content to them all but we have over 5000 products so it will take a long time. We also have the reviews on the pages and are looking at starting a Q&A on page to help get more unique content.

Do I really have too many links on my startpage?
My site www.poker-coaching.net is built with Joomla, and I have one main menu that links all articles (app. 120) in one language from the start page. The site has a language selection menu with translations available in 4 other languages, and for each language, there are another 80 articles linked from the main page. The SEOMOZ crawling report now say that I have too many links from the main page. I always thought it was a good thing for SEO to have articles linked from the main page - do I need to restructure my site and start building multi-level menu structures, where I would have a main menu on the start page and the next level menu would only be shown after a user clicks on a main menu item?

Optimise duplicate products or canonical link
We exist in a niche market with a good % of products that sell well at specific times of the year. Lets say for example a red cup can be sold as a christmas red cup and a valentine red cup or just a red cup. Would we be best to optimize each specific product specifically for those seasons/events on different pages or keep google pointed to just one page using a canonical link.
