Remove 404 errors
-
I've got a site (www.dikelli.com.au) that has some 404 errors.
I'm using Dreamweaver to manage the site which was built for me by
I can't seem to figure out how to remove the 404 pages as it's not showing up in the directory?
How would I fix this up?

Thanks Dana, much appreciated. A SEO company recently suggested signing up to them as they said "Google hates 404 errors." Which got me researching about it.
On a slightly different topic, I've got several hundred pages on my site and it looks like the original designer had the same title for each page. Should I got through each one and rename it, or is there a faster way? Would it be worth the time?

Hi sterls,
If the 404s are for pages that are gone and really no longer relevant, don't do anything. Just let them 404. This is perfectly normal. If they are 404 errors to pages that should be displaying, it's possible that perhaps you changed the page URLs, made a new page for old content (and then removed the old content page) or perhaps you re-wrote your URLs to be SEO friendly. In this case, all you have to do to rectify the 404s is set up 301 redirects. Depending on what platform you are using for your site there are usually some easy ways to do this. IN WordPress there's several very simple free 301-redirect management add-ons you can upload It usually involved inputting the old URL (which you can get from your Google Webmaster Tools crawl errors report) and then determining where you want that old URL to redirect to.
Let me know if that's helpful and if you need more guidance I'd be happy to help. Just know that not all 404 errors are bad. Sometimes, it's just natural for old pages to go away.
Dana

404 vs 410 vs 301
Hi guys, I am managing a real estate website, and obviously we have a LOT of pages detailing each property. As those properties get sold and removed from the website, I'm wondering how best to handle this - I know 404, 410 and 301's are all valid ways to go, but I want to provide the best UX combined with the best SEO effect. My thinking is to customise a 410 page to show the page has been permanently removed, and has a relevant message (rather than a generic 404 message) and shows a search box - possibly pre-populated according to the page they were looking for.

I think this gives a good UX and helps Google to understand the importance of the 000's of pages on our website.
I'd also like to clear property detail 404's as quick as possible to make it easier to see if we have problems elsewhere on the site. Having explained this to our development/SEO agency, they are strongly pushing for 301 redirects or leave as 404.
I think 301's would be the worst for UX, and as explained earlier, the volume of 404's is massive and makes it difficult to see real errors. They seem to think this is a better UX and better for SEO. Just wondering what you guys would recommend?0 -
Can I remove 301 redirects after some time?
Hello, We have an very large number of 301 redirects on our site and would like to find a way to remove some of them. Is there a time frame after which Google does not need a 301 any more? For example if A is 301 redirected to B, does Google know after a while not to serve A any more, and replaces any requests for A with B? How about any links that go to A? Or: Is the only option to have all links that pointed to A point to B and then the 301 can be removed after some time? Thank you for you you help!
