So, useless link exchange pages still work?!
-
After 3 years out of SEO I thought things might have moved on, but apparently not. Bit of back link research and all the top sites in my niche have tons of reciprocal links to barely relevant sites.
Do I really have to do this? I mean I thought this was so out of date, it's not much better than keyword stuffing.
So, should I just forget my lofty principles asking myself 'is this of any value to my users?' and just take the medicine?

Thanks for the replies. It's kind of what I feel - I can't really bring myself to start swapping links with 'Bulgarian dog widget' sites!
I had just been assuming that the value of a reciprocal link was pretty much null if the two sites were of similar standing - IMHO that's how it should be. I link to sites that I like, that's the way it should work.
Having said all that, I do have some more targeted, less precious sites that I might set up a 'useful links, / resources / our friends or whatever euphemism is favoured these days. But, I draw the line at some of the off-topic junk I see on my competitors.

Thanks for the great answer. Our site has minimal links compared to our competition but our links are quality relevant links. I was always frustrated trying to get good ranking for our site but as you said _your content, and your seo basics, and keep up your principles! _ Well after a year of sticking to our principals we have seen a dramatic increase in traffic and ranking. It's paying off. Thank you moz community.

Hi Chris,
Things like that sure can be frustrating. Since penguin / panda I have seen many users here question the actual benefit to them as their industries are still riddled with black hat seo tricks.
But in some cases Google can't really penalize a site simply for having 30 or 40 of these crappy links when they have 300-400 quality links. The big issue for Google is that many of these website owners did only what the seo industry told them to do, which was get as many links as possible. I think they did a pretty fair job at penalizing the biggest link rings and farms, but there are still many little guys out there that are operating. I would bet in time many more sites are going to get penalized.,
Remember your users, your content, and your seo basics, and keep up your principles!

In my belief, working on quality, expecting to have link on sites that are really big fish in the industry, eventually will pay out.
Yes, there are still a high number of websites which rank well with those links, but time will come when they will regret that.
So don't worry about your principles just keep up the good work.
Greetings,
Istvan

Google search console: 404 and soft 404 without any back-links. Redirect needed?
Hi Moz community, We can see the 404 and soft 404 errors in Google web masters. Usually these are non-existing pages which are found somewhere on internet by Google. I can see some of these reported URLs don't have any back-links (checked on ahrefs tool). Do we need to redirect each and every link reported here or ignore or marked to be fixed? Thanks

Noindex follow on checkout pages in 2017
Hi,
Algorithm Updates | | DGAU
My website really consists of 2 separate sites. Product site:
• Website with product pages.
• These product pages have SEO optimised content. Booking engine & checkout site:
• When a user clicks 'Book' on one of the product pages on the aforementioned product site they go to a seaparate website which is a booking engine and checkout.
• These pages are not quality, SEO optimised content, they only perform the function of booking and buying. Q1) Should I set 'noindex follow' via the meta tag on all pages of the 'Booking engine and checkout' site?
ie. Q2) should i add anything to the book buttons on the product site? I am hoping all this will somehow help concentrate the SEO juice onto the Product Site's pages by declaring the Booking engine and Checkout sites pages to be 'not of any content value'.0 -
Dates appear before home page description in the SERPs- HUGE drop in rankings
We have been on the first page of Google for a number of years for search terms including 'SEO Agency', 'SEO Agency London' etc. A few months ago we made some changes to the design of the home page (added a blog feed), and made changes to the website sitemap. Two days ago (two months after last site changes were made) we dropped subsantially in the SERPs for all home page keywords. Where we are found, a date appears before the description in the SERPs, dating February 2012 (which is when we launched the original website). The site has been through a revamp since then, yet it still shows 2012. This has been followed by a few additional strange things, including the sitelinks that Google is choosing to show (which including author bio pages showing in homepage site links), and googling our brand name no longer brings up sitelinks in the SERPs. The problem only affects the home page. All other pages are performing as standard. When Penguin 4.0 came out we saw a noted improvement in our SERP performance, and our backlinks are good and quality, largely from PR efforts. Of course, I would be interested in additional pairs of eyes on the back links to see if anyone thinks that I have missed anything! We have 3 of our senior SEOs working on trying to figure out what is going on and how to resolve it, but I would be very interested if anyone has any thoughts?

Adding the link masking directory to robots.txt?
Hey guys, Just want to know if you have any experience with this. Is it worthwhile blocking search engines from following the link masking directory.. (what i mean by this is the directory that holds the link redirectors to an affiliate site: example:
Algorithm Updates | | irdeto
mydomain.com/go/thislink goes to
amazon.com/affiliatelink I want to know if blocking the 'go' directory from getting crawled in robots.txt is a good idea or a bad idea? I am not using wordpress but rather a custom built php site where i need to manually decide on these things. i want to specifically know if this in any way violates guidelines for google. it doesn't change the custom experience because they know exactly where they will end up if they click on the link. any advice would be much appreciated.0 -
Sitewide links - nofollow or delete?
Hi, I've just come across a website with 3 sitewide links. I was thinking of adding nofollow but then thought, well, is that the best option? From an SEO perspective is it better to actually delete those links? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Will too many [img no alt-text] links harm a link profile?
Hi everyone. I have a client who has a lot of sponsorships etc and therefore a lot of inbound image links (many of them sitewide). Unfortunately most of these don't have alt text, and [img no alt-text] links now make up over 50% of their link profile. Should I be trying to correct this and requesting updates from the people who are linking? Obviously I wouldn't want loads of keyword stuffed alt texts, but maybe I should request alt texts on the brand name or URL instead. Do you think this would make a significant difference and be worth the time it will take to contact all these webmasters? Thanks in advance.

Why has my homepage been replaced in Google by my Facebook page?
Hi. I was wondering if others have had this happen to them. Lately, I've noticed that on a couple of my sites the homepage no longer appears in the Google SERP. Instead, a Facebook page I've created appears in the position the homepage used to get. My subpages still get listed in Google--just not the homepage. Obviously, I'd prefer that both the homepage and Facebook page appear. Any thoughts on what's going on? Thanks for your help!
