What can i do to stop my site from dropping in the rankings
-
Hi, we were number one in google for the keyword lifestyle magazine but now our magazine website www.in2town.co.uk is doing very bad in the rankings. One week ago we were around 8 then we went to 12 and now we are on the third page and i am not sure what is happening.
We wanted and needed our home page to rank for the keywords of lifestyle magazine, lifestyle news but none of these keywords are doing very well with google
can anyone please point me in the right direction so i can stop my site falling any further
I am not sure if the home page is properly optimized but i have never had trouble with it before
many thanks

Hi thank you for this. Yes i do need guidance. that is without a doubt.

Hey Diane
I think you need to do a couple of things.
1. Clean up some of the very worst links to ensure you don't end up with a penalty or problems from some of the link building that has been done. Check out linkdetox.com to help with this and then do a manual audit.
2. Look at the biggest and best sites in your industry OR sites where you feel there is a big cross over audience - that is readers of that site would enjoy reading your site and then see if you can pitch them a guest blog post. The idea is to go for exposure here and if you win a link in the bargain then all the better!
With regards to getting links you need to have great content and to really network with other bloggers. Once you get established and people start to talk about what you are doing then people will want to link to it.
There is more to this, obviously, but it starts with great content. I wrote something about this here if it helps:

Really, as I see with most of the people I work with, you lack strategy. Nothing is terribly wrong with what you are doing, you just need some guidance with regards to the content creation winning links and to help you from straying to the dark side.
Cheers!

hi thanks for this. we have never been great at getting links, we have really struggled on this.
can you explain more about this please
do a small amount of triple A guest posts on big sites with the intention of generating exposure with a bonus link (rather than a link with bonus exposure).
What we have been trying to work out, is to get people to link back to us. we have just started allowing guest posts, and we are trying to work out ways of getting the people who write for us to link back, would love to hear your thoughts on this
many thanks for your help

Hey Diane
From a quick look at things I would say the rankings for 'lifestyle magazine' were predominately based on the link building done for the site as we have some heavy usage of 'lifestyle magazine' as the main anchor.
Links on pages like these:
http://brownsvillebankruptcyattorney.com/resources.php?cid=8&page=7
http://brownsvilleaccidentlawyer.com/resources.php?cid=8&page=8
None of which are currently indexed are doing you any good and looking at the general ratio and type of linking sites, it is lucky you have not fell foul of this before now.
On a plus note, you don't seem to have a penalty for these terms (from the briefest of looks) and it seems that you are really just seeing the result of the devaluation of lots of your linking pages / sites.
Ultimately, you can't rely on a single keyword as your traffic strategy for your site and you would be far better focusing on a wide range of lifestyle related keywords with your blog content. It seems you are a magazine with lots of content so I would make this your focus and try to bring traffic in via a wide range of pages.
Ultimately, you need to flip your strategy on it's head.
- focus on content and building a readership
- build traffic via a wide array of content items
- bring people back to the site by generating social sign ups and seeding your content
- Be careful with regards to quality and who you let guest post on the site
- do a small amount of triple A guest posts on big sites with the intention of generating exposure with a bonus link (rather than a link with bonus exposure).
Really, you just need to focus on making your site great, forget about these very general and vague keywords and set some real business related goals and track those rather than rankings and you should be good to go. A well ran content strategy will outperform a well optimised single keyword tenfold with enough time and effort behind it.
Hope that helps!
Marcus

I have 2 E-commerce sites - Can i cross link?
Good Morning Everyone, I have 2 e-commerce websites that are similar and sell the same products. The content (text/descriptions/titles) is different so the content is not duplicate. SITE A has a ton of blog posts with highly relevant information and we frequently update the blog with posts about the types of products we carry and how it can help people in their daily lives... SITE B has no blog posts, but the content on the blog from SITE A is extremely relevant and helpful to anyone using SITE B. My question is, do you think it is frowned upon if i were to add links on SITE B that point to specific posts on SITE A... For example, if you are browsing a category page on SITE B, i was thinking of adding links on the bottom that would say "For More Information, Please Check Out These Posts on our Blog" www.sitea.com/blog/relevantinfo1 www.sitea.com/blog/relevantinfo2 www.sitea.com/blog/relevantinfo3 I think this would seriously help our browsers and potential customers get all of the information that they need, but what do you think Google would think about this cross-linking and if it violates their guidelines? Thanks for any opinions and advice.

Why can no tool crawl this site?
I am trying to perform a crawl analysis on a client's website at https://www.bravosolution.com I have tried to crawl it with IIS for SEO, Sreaming Frog and Xenu and not one of them makes it further than the home page of the site. There is nothing I can see in the robots.txt that is blocking these agents. As far as I can see, Google is able to crawl the site although they have noticed a significant drop in organic traffic. Any advise would be very welcome Regards Danny

Site Ranking Ahead of Us - Why?
I don't want to give details, but a competitor's site ranks ahead of us by a spot or 2 for some of our major keywords, and we can't figure out why. We have more content indexed, we have better content (my opinion), we're better optimized, we have significantly better MozRank and Majestic rankings, we have more links, we have better links. They have a plain Jane Wordpress blog, and their pages don't even have 300 characters. They don't have any awesome links. There are plenty of other sites besides ours that should outrank them. When I am using the various tools at my disposal, I can see why a competitor outranks us. I'm not obsessing, but this one, I just don't understand. Has anyone had this experience?

Can view pages of site, but Google & SEOmoz return 404
I can visit and view every page of a site (can also see source code), but Google, SEOmoz and others say anything other than home page is a 404 and Google won't index the sub-pages. I have check robots.txt and HTAccess and can't find anything wrong. Is this a DNS or server setting problem? Any ideas? Thanks, Fitz

Sudden drop in ranking google.co.uk ranking
Anyone else had any sudden drops in rankings this week? Is there an update going on? One of my primary keywords has dropped from 6th to 49th in the google.co.uk search results. Not in webmaster tools to flag an issue. I have downloaded the links from webmaster and it does look if some content has been scraped and then linked back to us from a large number of sites that we have never sort links from. I have upload the google disavow link tool. Only one keyword appears to be effected not all of them? Any ideas? Thanks

One site per location or all under and umbrella site?
I am working on a project where we are re-branding lots (100+) existing local business under one national brand. I am wondering what we should do with their existing websites, they are generally fairly poor and will need re-designing to match the new brand but may have some residual links? 301 redirect the URL to the national site, e.g. nationalsite.com/localbusinessA? If so what should I look out for? Do I need to specifically redirect any pages that have links to them to the same pages on the new site? Or should I give them a new standalone website that they link back to the national brand site? More than likely this will be hosted on the same server and CMS as the main site just the URL will remain Do I need to make sure that any old URL's that had links to them are 301'd to the new pages? Many thanks for you advice.

Sudden drop in rankings
Hi there, I've been working on this site for three or four months (it was a brand new site), and we were seeing some really great improvements in rankings. I've concentrated on writing lots of good quality content and building a network of links through blogging and social networks. Then, last weekend (6th October), we got completely wiped off of the results. We went from rankings 2,3 and 4 for our target terms to not being in the top 100. I assumed we'd been given a penalty from Google as we'd been SEOing too hard and removed a reciprocal links page we had and asked Google to reconsider. I just got a message back saying there hasn't been any manual penalty, so it's just down to the algorithm. I'm running am SEOMoz analysis, but so far it's just coming up with things like page titles too long and too many links on pages, which I can fix, but don't seem like something that would completely destroy us so abruptly. I think we really have the most and best content on the subject of becoming a model, which has taken a great deal of effort to put tgether, so this is crushing. If anybody can shed any light, I'll be extremely grateful, and I'd be interested to knwo if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Thanks in advance! URL: www.modellingadvice. info Kat

Young site trying hard, but banging head against the wall -- Site Review
Hi All New to PRO but we're seriously committed to getting this working. And firstly thank you to anyone who offers any useful thoughts and insights. We've launched a new site, unfortunately late to the market for the season and are really struggling to get search engine recognition. Site: http://www.ignitehats.co.uk/ We're continuously adding new content, slowly gathering more links and working hard to promote socially. But even on our clearest search terms like "Ignite hats" we're down on page 4. Both GWT and the Seomoz tools highlight no big problems (a few titles that are too long) but otherwise nothing. Maybe wrongly we requested that the Google spam team review our site incase it was being penalised, but got a template response saying the site was not in their spam system (phew, there wasn't a reason it should be we believe). We're wondering if this is just that our site is just too young? It's been live for 6 weeks. But worry maybe this is not the case. We've had success with another site we run much sooner than this. Any help or pointers would be really appreciated. Similar stories and what others have done, at least to give us some confidence to carry on would be great. Thanks for reading.
