Rel canonical question
-
Hi,
I have an e-commerce site hosted on Volusion currently the rel canonical link for the homepage points to www.store.com/default.asp. I spoke with the Volusion support people and they told me that whether the canonical link points to store.com/default.asp or store.com does not really matter as long as there is a canonical version. I thought this sounded odd, so looked at other websites hosted on volusion and some sites canonicalize to default.asp and others .com. (volusion.com canonicalizes to .com fwiw).
The question is...I have a majority of my external links going to www.store.com , and since that page has default.asp as it canonical version, am I losing link juice from those incoming links? If so, should I change the canonical link? If I do what are the potential issues/penalties?
Hopefully this question makes sense and thanks in advance.

Hi Dana
How do I change such rel canonical for Volusion store?
Thanks in advance.

Dana,
Did you ever run into this issue with one of those volusion stores?
-
Thanks for the responses
That was my hunch...appreciate the help

I agree with Anthony. I managed 6 Volusion stores for one company for several years. It's a decent platform, but don't rely on them for your technical SEO advice. Some of their tech reps are very green.

Technically, it doesn't necessarily matter. However, it matters to you for these two reasons.
- The majority of your external links point to the regular store.com website
- You want your store.com URL to rank for branding and CT purposes
Losing link juice: probably negligible but why risk it
I would change the canonical link. It should not be a difficult switch.

Implementation of rel="next" & rel="prev"
Hi All, I'm looking to implement rel="next" & rel="prev", so I've been looking for examples. I looked at the source code for the MOZ.com forum, if anyone one is going to do it properly MOZ are. I noticed that the rel="next" & rel="prev" tags have been implemented in the a href tags that link to the previous and next pages rather than in the head. I'm assuming this is fine with Google but in their documentation they state to put the tags in the . Does it matter? Neil.

Domains and Hosting Question
I bought hosting for unlimited domains on Godaddy. It's not a dedicated server. It was just $85 a year. I have unlimited latency but a limited amount of "space." I don't know a lot about hosting servers etc... My question is relatively simple. When I go in GoDaddy to my hosting. There is a site that shows up as hosted, and all of the other sites show up under that site in it's directory. If you type the name of the site I bought the hosted package on, then type a forward slash and the name of one of the other sites on the hosting package, you will actually go to the other website. What is this relationship? Is it normal? Does that make all of my websites subdomains of the main site (that I bought the hosting package on)? I don't fully comprehend how this effects everything...

Drupal Question
So on our site we have a plugin for our fan gallery. The issue is that I am getting a lot of duplication errors and it's saying the URL is too long and all the errors are coming from the Fan Gallery, which has over 8,000 errors. It seems to be pulling a long form query URL that has over 100 characters. You can't physically see it on the site, but the crawlers can. Anyway I'm trying to figure out a fix for this. One method would be to just stop those pages from being crawled, but I would hate to do that as the fan gallery for us would be a great source of links and content. So I'm wondering if anyone else has had an issue with these types of plugins before where the user can upload a photo or do a video embed and then it submits to the site. If you have a better method please let me know. I usually work on E-comm platforms so my experience with drupal is limited.

301 Redirect Questions
I have a site I built on a wisiwig editing platform that will not allow a 301 redirect. The site has already been remade and I need to point it to another domain. To do the redirect, can I change it to another domain host that will allow a 301 or will that make me loose the authority of the site? I may not be able to move the content of the site. Please help.

URL Structure Question
Hey folks, I have a weird problem and currently no idea how to fix it. We have a lot of pages showing up as duplicates although they are the same page, the only difference is the url structure. They seem to show up like: http://www.example.com/page/ and http://www.example.com/page What would I need to do to force the URLs into one format or the other to avoid having that one page counting as two? The same issue pops up with upper and lower case: http://www.example.com/Page and http://www.example.com/page Is there any solution to this or would I need to forward them with 301s or similar? Thanks, Mike
