Can you redirect from a 410 server error? I see many 410s that should be directed to an existing page.
-
We have 150,000 410 server errors. Many of them should be redirected to an existing url. This is a result of a complete website redesign, including new navigation and new web platform. I believe IT may have inadvertently marked many 404s as 410s. Can I fix this or is a 410 error permanent?
Thank you for your help.

Oh! Thanks! I will pass that on. As you probably guessed, I am not as well versed in server errors as I would like to be. I am more of an SEO Analyst / Marketing person. I don't actually make changes at the server level. I am learning a lot from the problems that arose out of a website redesign. I am new and trying to get everything fixed.
Again, thank you for your help.

The 410 error isn't generated until the page is loaded. The code in htaccess will redirect the crawler to the new page before it has a chance to load the old one.
It's just like if you have a page that doesn't exist, that generates a 404 error. By adding a redirect in the htaccess file, you can point crawlers & visitors to a new URL and not generate a 404.

I am just trying to figure out if they can be redirected. From what I have read, labeling something a 410 error is the end. You can't go back and change it to a redirect to a webpage. Is that correct or can we redirect them? I have software engineers that can do the redirects. I just want to make sure that I'm asking them to do something that is possible.
Again, thank you for your help.

There must be some kind of logic to your old URLs and your new ones? If you post examples, I can help with the redirect code.
Also, are these pages being linked to from anywhere? If you click on the errors in GWT, it should show you where these pages are being linked from. If the links to these pages no longer exist, they will drop off by themselves eventually.

Thank you for your help.
I am trying to get the 410s that are listed in Google Webmaster Tools (Page Not Found server errors) redirected to an actual existing page. What I think happened is that soft 404s were improperly designated by IT as 410s. Almost all of them can be directed to an actual webpage. I would hate to lose that traffic.
There really isn't a common pattern.
This was as a result of implementation of a new design / layout of a website and pages that were not not properly redirected. Now they come in as soft 404 errors.
Again, thank you for your help.

Is there a common pattern to be found in the URLs that are generating the 410 errors? Then it should be possible to 301 redirect those URLs via your .htaccess file. Also, Google is crawling those URLs because links to them exist somewhere. If you can remove the links to the pages, it should stop them from getting crawled.

Error msg 'Duplicate Page Content', how to fix?
Hey guys, I'm new to SEO and have the following error msg 'Duplicate Page Content'. Of course I know what it means, but my question is how do you delete the old pages that has duplicate content? I use to run my website through Joomla! but have since moved to Shopify. I see that the duplicated site content is still from the old Joomla! site and I would like to learn how to delete this content (or best practice in this situation). Any advice would be very helpful! Cheers, Peter

Should i redirect my lost links to my home page
Hi, as some of you maybe aware, i had a major problem last year that has caused me nothing but trouble. in short, my hosting company lost me over 10,000 pages from my site and i had to rebuild the site from stratch which is still on going. I lost thousands of links to my site and i have been over the past week pointing the pages not found to the sections that is best suited to them. But i am just wondering if it would harm my site if i also point some of those links to my home page. I was a page rank four before disaster happened to my site and now i am a page rank two and i want to build this up. so i am just wondering if i should point some of those good links to my home page i am redirecting the pages using 301 in my htaccess file any advice would be great

Can I format my H1 to be smaller than H2's and H3's on the same page?
I would like to create a web design with 12px H1 and for sub headings on the page to be more like 24px. Will search engines see this and dislike it? The reason for doing it is that I want to put a generic page title in the banner, and more poetic headings above the main body. Example: Small H1: Wholesale coffee, online coffee shop and London roastery Large h2: Respect the bean... Thanks

404 errors on non-existent URLs
Hey guys and gals, First Moz Q&A for me and really looking forward to being part of the community. I hope as my first question this isn't a stupid one but I was just struggling to find any resource that dealt with the issue and am just looking for some general advice. Basically a client has raised a problem with 404 error pages - or the lack thereof- on non-existent URLs on their site; let's say for example: 'greatbeachtowels.com/beach-towels/asdfas' Obviously content never existed on this page so its not like you're saying 'hey, sorry this isn't here anymore'; its more like- 'there was never anything here in the first place'. Currently in this fictitious example typing in 'greatbeachtowels.com/beach-towels/asdfas**'** returns the same content as the 'greatbeachtowels.com/beach-towels' page which I appreciate isn't ideal. What I was wondering is how far do you take this issue- I've seen examples here on the seomoz site where you can edit the URI in a similar manner and it returns the same content as the parent page but with the alternate address. Should 404's be added across all folders on a site in a similar way? How often would this scenario be and issue particularly for internal pages two or three clicks down? I suppose unless someone linked to a page with a misspelled URL... Also would it be worth placing 301 redirects on a small number of common mis-spellings or typos e.g. 'greatbeachtowels.com/beach-towles' to the correct URLs as opposed to just 404s? Many thanks in advance.
