What might make Bing.bot find a URL that looks like this on our site?
-
I have been doing something Richard Baxter recently suggested and reviewing our server logs.
I have found an oddity that hopefully some of you smart Mozzers can help me figure out.
Here is the line from the server log (there are many more like this):
157.55.32.166 - - [04/Mar/2013:08:00:59 -0800] "GET /StoreFront/category/www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/category/shure-se-earphones HTTP/1.1" 200 94133 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; bingbot/2.0; +http://www.bing.com/bingbot.htm)" "-"
See how the www.ccisolutions.com appears after /StoreFront/category/ ? We used to see weird URLs reported in GWT that looked like this, but ever since we fixed our canonical tags to be absolute instead of relative URLs, they no longer appeared in our Webmaster Tools reports.
However, it seems there is still a problem. Where/how could Bingbot be seeing URLs configured this way? Could it be a server issue, or is it most likely a data problem?
Thanks in advance!
Dana
P.S. Could this be resulting from our massive use of relative URLs all over the site?
-
Hi Streamline,
I thought I would circle back and update everyone as to what I found. You were correct about mal-formed URLs being the culprit of this problem. We have many isolated incidences of URLs for internal links that are missing the "/" at the beginning of a relative URL. There are inconsistencies on the relative URLs all over the site. It's certainly an example of one of many problems that can be caused by using relative rather than absolute URLs.
Since we are in the process of completely re-doing the site and moving to a new platform, it's something we can definitely work to get right during the transition.
Thanks again to you, Daniel and Keri for jumping in with answers.
Dana

Thanks to you both Daniel and Streamline.
I believe the problem may have to do with our .htaccess file. I am obtaining a copy of it now.
-
Thanks Keri. That's very helpful. I will do that.
-
Hi Dana,
I agree with Streamline, there will be a hidden issue in you site that it attempting to connect to an under formed link (a URL missing 'http://'). Given there is a number of them in one day I will guess this is happening in a templated page.
Have a look at;
It renders as a page.
The best course of action would be resolve it at the source. If you can pinpoint when this issue is due to occur next, have your developer get each page to append it's URL into the log at the beginning of the page. Then you should be able to determine where the issue is occurring. I am hoping you well see a discernible pattern.
Worse case scenario, possibly a canonical will work, OR create a REGEX redirect to handle this URL pattern in htaccess...
Hope this helps,
Dan

Dana, you might also want to contact Bing at https://support.discoverbing.com/eform.aspx?productKey=bingwebmaster&ct=eformts&scrx=1. I sent a quick note on Twitter to Duane Forrester and that's the URL he provided.

Can you tell from which page Bing is trying to access these URLs? And it only happened on the 4th and not on any other day? Could it be an issue with the sitemap on that day?
I'm looking at your site now and the page http://www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/category/www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/category/shure-se-earphones is returning a 200 response code to me, not a 404 code. The key is to figure out how Bing discovered the URL in the first place...
-
While this is certainly a possibility, I'm not sure it's the cause of the problem. If this were the case, wouldn't it most likely cause a 404 error, instead of rendering the proper page (albeit with a very funky URL) and a 200 status code?
The other thing making me think it's not just a poorly constructed link on the site is that there are over 100 of these in the server log, from just one day.
Thoughts?
-
I'm willing to bet that on some page of your site, there is a link pointing to www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/category/shure-se-earphones which is missing the "http://" at the beginning. So if Bing or a user tried to click on that link, they would be directed to /StoreFront/category/www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/category/shure-se-earphones instead of the correct link.

Broken URL Links
Hi everyone, I have a question regarding broken URL links on my website. Late last year I move my site from an old platform to Shopify, and now have broken URL links giving out 4xx errors. When I look at Moz Pro>Campaigns>Insights>links, I can see the top broken URL links, however there is a difference if copy & paste URL directly from Moz Pro and by Export CSV file. For example below, If I copy and paste links direct from Moz Pro, it has the “http://” in front as below: http://www.thehairhub.com.au/WebRoot/ecshared01/Shops/thehairhub/57F3/1D8F/D244/C675/E27D/AC10/003F/35AD/manic-panic-colours.jpg But when I export the list of links as an CSV file, the http:// is removed. www.thehairhub.com.au/WebRoot/ecshared01/Shops/thehairhub/57F3/1D8F/D244/C675/E27D/AC10/003F/35AD/manic-panic-colours.jpg Another Example below: By copy & paste URL direct from Moz Pro

http://thehairhub.com.au/Shop-Brands/Vitafive-CPR/CPR-Rescue By export CSV file.
thehairhub.com.au/Shop-Brands/Vitafive-CPR/CPR-Rescue Which one do I use to enter into the “Redirect From” field in Shopify URL Redirects? Do I need to have the http:// in front of the URL? Or is it not required for redirects to work? Kind Regards, John Wall

Partner Sites
Hi All, Within our company we have a media group that publishes magazines and videos, the sites have footers that link to our shopping site, one of them has 118,459 links to one URL, domain authority 23, and the other 17,726 to seven URLs, domain authority 52, (there are some articles which link organically). My question is are these links because they're from identifiable companies with the same ownership worth keeping or are they detrimental? The site being linked to has a DA of 39 Cheers Stew

Marketing URL
Hi, I need a bit of advice on marketing URL's. The destinations URL is http://www.website.com/by-development.php?area=Isle Of Wight&development=developmentname. If we wanted to use www.website.com/developmentname on literature to send people to the ugly URL above, what would we do? Would we need to rewrite the ugly URL to the neat and then 301 the ugly to the neat? Currently, the team are using a new domain of neatandrelevant.info and 301 redirecting it to ugly URL but there are lots of different developments they want to send people to so a new domain is bought for each development which seems a bit unnecessary. They point to different pages on the ugly URL website. Assuming canonical tag would not be needed then because the ugly URL page would be redirected. Also, as the website has ugly URL's anyway, would it not be best practice to use rewrites anyway so that the URL's read www.mywebsite.com/region/development? Would it confuse things to then have extra short marketing URL's missing out /region? Hope that makes sense....

SEOMoz is finding jpegs on my site and reporting them as pages with missing meta titles
SEOMoz has just done a crawl of my site, and found 600 pages with missing meta title errors. When I have checked the list of these pages, they are all jpegs and not pages. Why is SEOMoz reporting that this .jpg files have missing meta titles on my site, which is www.webmakercms.com? SEOMoz has run several crawls of my site and this is the first time it has brought up this list of jpegs as errors and I don't understand why?

301 an old site to a newer site...
Hi First, to be upfront - these are not my websites, I'm asking because they are trying to compete in my niche. Here's the details, then the questions... There is a website that is a few months old with about 200 indexed pages and about 20 links, call this newsite.com There is a website that is a few years old with over 10,000 indexed pages and over 20,000 links, call this oldsite.com newsite.com acquired oldsite.com and set a 301 redirect so every page of oldsite.com is re-directed to the front page of newsite.com newsite.com & oldsite.com are on the same topic, the 301 occurred in the past week. Now, oldsite.com is out of the SERPs and newsite.com is pretty much ranking in the same spot (top 10) for the main term. Here are my questions; 1. The 10,000 pages on oldsite.com had plenty of internal links - they no longer exists, so I imagine when the dust settles - it will be like oldsite.com is a one page site that re-diretcts to newsite.com ... How long will a ranking boost last for? 2. With the re-direct setup to completely forget about the structure and content of oldsite.com, it's clear to me that it was setup to pass the 'Link Juice' from oldsite.com to newsite.com ... Do the major SE's see this as a form of SPAM (manipulating the rankings), or do they see it as a good way to combine two or more websites? 3. Does this work? Is everybody doing it? Should I be doing it? ... or are there better ways for me to combat this type of competition (eg we could make a lot of great content for the money spent buying oldsite.com - but we certainly wouldn't get such an immediate increase to traffic)?
