Counting over-optimised links - do internal links count too?
-
To whit:
In working out whether I've too many over-optimised links pointing to my homepage, do I look at just external links -- or also the links from my internal pages to my homepage?
In other words, can a natural link profile from internal pages help dilute overoptimisation from external links?
-
Over-optimized internal links can only harm you, you are in direct control of those, external links you are not. So I would do everything you can on your site to show Google that you are not trying to game the system and that includes well but not over optimized internal linking. Paul answered your question well though.

Paul is definitely on the money with that answer. However I would not worry at all about internal links being over optimized you're speaking your internal links linking to each other inside your page home to about for more L juice. Talking about just having the correct anchor text on I believe it's one of the last places you can actually use anchor text your advantage. However
I would not start destroying the inside of your website for changing the photographs that you may have put the correct Alt. text and names for that you could still rank for in order to alleviate penalty brought on by inbound external links.
My suggestion is that you keep your page internally optimized because you need kugels meal to crawl it correctly. And those things still do matter it's pretty easy Rangifer photos videos things like that I would not tear apart. I would however show Google that you're doing good by creating substance and really working hard at it.
I know everybody says that and listen man I know it's easier said than done so I'm not trying to tell you there's an easy way out if you're interested of this. However my belief is if you start creating quality content you can only do the best you can do and without that you're not going to trick Google for a living so Call the rules and don't worry so much about over optimization and things like that unless it is really something that has been brought to your attention by Google because people get paranoid that category but what Paul said is true I am certain Google's algorithm keeps everything into account that you've done inside your site and off.
My belief is that Google is getting more into who we are personally and the point of regarding of Trying to figure out just who we actually are what our intentions are thery read your email Google apps for Gmail. But they have everything they have all the information so I think that might start playing a hand in the algorithms.

In my experience, this is a "worst of both worlds" situation, Jeepster.
Over-optimised internal linking can definitely cause harm, but well-optimized internal links can't make up for over-optimised externals.
If you think of this from the search engines' perspective, it wouldn't really make sense to allow you to alleviate spammy external tactics by being a "good boy" on your own site. Especially when external incoming links are likely a much more important ranking factor than internal links.
That's my .02.
Paul

Internal links to landing pages
Hi, we are in the process of building a new website and we have 12 different locations and for theses 12 locations we have landing pages with unique copy on the following: 1. Marketing...2 SEO....3. PPC....4. Web Design Therefor there are 48 landing pages. The marketing pages are the most important ones to us in terms of traffic and priority. My question is: 1. Should we put a dropdown of the are pages in the main header under locations that link to the area marketing pages? 2. What is the best way to link all the sub pages such as London Web Design? Should these links just be coming off the London marketing page? or should we have a sitemap in the footer that lists every page? Thanks

If I deindex a page then will Google stop counting those links pointing to it?
Hey everyone, I am deindexing some posts of my website as I think they are not providing any value to the users. My question is that if I deindex a post and it has some good quality links pointing to it, will google stop those links counting for my website?

How would you build links to this page?
Hi i have ecommerce store and currently we are looking to build links to category pages like: http://www.theiconic.com.au/womens-clothing-dresses-party-dresses/ What are some natural ways to build links to a page like this? Our SEO agency has done guest posting and forums but these are not natural link building methods and against Google policy. Any suggestions on how to build natural links to these pages? Cheers.

Disavow Links Notification
No manual actions on our sites, just Penguin related. I put in a disavow for one site in October and Webmaster Tools kept a message up for some time saying the disavow links file for that site had been updated. I put in a disavow for another site of ours last week and I've had no such message. I checked and the file is there. Was this an intentional change on Google's part? Just want to make sure something's not messed up here.

Do image "lightbox" photo gallery links on a page count as links and dilute PageRank?
Hi everyone, On my site I have about 1,000 hotel listing pages, each which uses a lightbox photo gallery that displays 10-50 photos when you click on it. In the code, these photos are each surrounded with an "a href", as they rotate when you click on them. Going through my Moz analytics I see that these photos are being counted by Moz as internal links (they point to an image on the site), and Moz suggests that I reduce the number of links on these pages. I also just watched Matt Cutt's new video where he says to disregard the old "100 links max on a page" rule, yet also states that each link does divide your PageRank. Do you think that this applies to links in an image gallery? We could just switch to another viewer that doesn't use "a href" if we think this is really an issue. Is it worth the bother? Thanks.

Do Internal Link Anchor Text Count Towards Overall Ratio?
I have a few pages that have dropped in rankings recently. I suspect it is because of the ratio of the anchor text. For example, you have 20 links pointing to page site.com/mens-jeans.html, and 15 have the anchor text "mens jeans". If I am looking to dilute the exact match anchor text, will the internal links count? Thanks

Links from Directories
We are currently listed in a number of Association Buyer's Guides. We signed up for these last year in an effort to increase our external links. With recent Panda changes, do these links carry any value for us? Here are some examples: http://buyersguideforeducators.com/ http://wasteindustrymarketplace.com/ http://wefbuyersguide.com/ We're in about 40-50 of these different directories. Thanks, Ben
