New Website Redesign: Any Design Comments or SEO Suggestions?
-
Hi!
We recently launched our new website after MONTHS of work. Now that it is live, we are looking to fine tune the design and SEO efforts.
This is our new website.
And for reference, this is our old website.
Any and all comments on design and SEO would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your help!

Hi Ron,
We did the design in house. Our graphic designer and I sat down and just started critiquing all of our competitors. We found things we liked about sites and things we didn't. Then we took a hard left turn... we started looking at web design websites, hip and trendy consumer product pages (we do B2B), we actually even looked at a really cool ice cream distributor's website to get some inspiration.
BlueGlass posted this article last June on 21 Tools to Unlock Your Creative Genius which definitely does get your mind working in a different way.
And here is an AWESOME site that has "the best designs" - which is pretty true to its name.
Once we had our inspiration, we started wireframing and drafting things. When we had the basic idea of what we wanted the pages to look like, we paused and made sure that it would be able to accommodate our SEO plan as well. We made some changes for SEO purposes... then just went with it.
Hope this brief information gives you an idea of how we were able to come up with our design.
Mike
PS our graphic designer and his brother do some freelance webdesign work. PM me and I can get you his contact information.

Do you mind if I ask who designed the site for you. Did you do it in house or through an agency? So hard to find a good designer these days.

You're welcome Mike!
Yep, getting a bit obsessed with GTMetrix at the moment. Great resource though and your score on there already is good.
Great job again!

Thank you for your response Tom!
Spot on about the H1s. I noticed this in my on page report card and that is definitely something I am going to look into fixing ASAP!
You recommended GTMetrix in another post and I ran that test a few days ago. We are looking into leveraging browser caching. I just need to sit down with our webmaster and explain the benefits of it to our site and our visitors.
Thanks for the awesome and prompt feedback Tom!

Hi Mike
Visually I think that looks fantastic, while still offering a great amount of readable content for a crawler. Think you've done an excellent job with design.
Couple of things off the bat that I can see. Your meta description exceeds 155 characters on the homepage - which means that it might be truncated in the search engine results. With your call to action at the end of that description ("Request a free demonstration today."), it's at risk of being ignored and not shown by Google, which would be a great shame.
I see you're using 5 H1 tags but 0 H2s - now the H1 tag definitely has lost its strength that it used to have in the rankings, but to have 5 is sending a somewhat conflicting message to Google about what the site might be about. Would it be possible to have one H1 and the other 4 as H2? It might not be ideal, as I don't think you'd want to interfere with the design too much as I think it looks great. If the H2 is not that different from the H1 I think it might be an idea to do that - it gives a nice sort of hierarchy for the crawler in that way.
Here's a link to a GTMetrix speed report for your site. The scores are pretty good, but there's a key priority fix there that could make a key difference for your site and that's leveraging browser caching. If you click on it, click on the "What's this mean?" button in the top right and then the "read more" link that pops up, you'll get a guide on how to do it. It's quite an easy and quick fix, so I'd recommend it.
Other than that, the design looks great, it's a nice clear text, the site architecture looks good and interlinks to your pages well, title tags look good - I've not done keyword research for those terms, but they look good ones to target - all in all I think it's a great looking site with a solid SEO foundation, that with a few tweaks can be really strong.
Think you have an awful lot to be proud of here Mike, great job!

Is there a way to host my website.com/BLOG URL PATH from a different host than my main website.com host?
Is there a way to host my website.com/BLOG URL PATH from a different host than my main website.com host? Is it accomplish-able with DNS settings or are there other considerations that might lead to complications doing this? Specifically, we are investigating install WordPress on a dedicated host, JUST to power the blog for our main website, but our main website is on an internal proprietary hosting and CMS. So basically we're trying to host: website.com --> OFF OF CURRENT INTERNAL HOSTING website.com/blog/ --> OFF OF THIRD PARTY HOSTING (USING WORDPRESS) I know this is a technical question beyond the scope of SEO, but I'm figuring there are members of the community that may have tried this already so I'm floating it here. Many thanks! Cheers.

Questioning people that left the website?
If we have a pop up on our site and new customers have subscribed to get 5% off (which i believe shows intent) and they do not purchase would you contact them and find out why they have not purchased to get a better understanding of issues with the website, If so I believe it needs to be more than the standard email of further discount (for example receive an extra 10% discount) or standard do you need help email (we need to either talk direct with them or offer something for there help such as 50% off) Any help would be appreciate in finding our pain points on the site www.fastprint.co.uk.

Does a Website Overlay Hurt Ranking?
We are looking into personalizing visits on our website. Rather than to write Tb of code on each page, we want to use a little line of Java script on the page, that would allow to place overlay on the site, depending on the visitor. Example: Change the home page picture when a returning visitor comes back on the website and show him/her a different picture bases upon the pages he/she visited prior. Would that overlay be caught by Google and would G have a problem with that? We all know about cloaking, but G does not penalize for heat mapping overlays, for example. Or not to my knowledge they don't. Thanks all for your personal insights! Peter

What would be the best way to translate my website for international seo?
I am planning on creating a multi language website that targets different countries and would like to know what would be the best way to translate my content from English to multiple different languages (French, Spanish, Swedish, Chinese, etc.). I would hire a translator but doing so for all these different languages would be too costly. Using Google translate will leave me with at best a rough translation. What are my other options? Is there a website that can provide me a better translation? Would Fiver be a better/cheaper alternative? Thoughts?

Do pull quotes affect SEO positively or negatively?
I like the design element of a pull quote to ad interest and highlight an important point. If I use an exact quote from the page in a pull quote on that page, does that negatively affect SEO as duplicate content? Are there formatting or tagging methods that could help pull quotes to boost SEO? For clarity, by "pull quote" I mean a stylized bit of text that floats on a page in such a way that the body text wraps around it. It is actual text (not text embedded in a graphic) but it behaves like an image with text wrapping around it. Here's an example (in red on the right side): http://www.21ct.com/resources/news-room/21ct-announces-its-latest-us-patent-for-advancing-big-data-security/

Website redesign testing environment
An external company is redesigning our website. They have a draft version active in a folder on their website to enable us to view it (example: www.externalcompanywebsite.com/ourwebsite/). There is no permission required to view the website, anyone with the url could just go there. I am not sure if they're using the robots.txt to block crawlers, or if they're blocking specific ip addresses. If the engines are allowed to crawl their website and they index pages of our draft website, does that affect our website negatively in the future once we host it on our domain?

Mobile sites! Any advice or suggestions for building one?
Hello Mozland, I'm looking to have a mobile site built. We have a fair amount of traffic coming from smart phones, tablets etc and want to capture this traffic better. Do you have any advice on how to have it built properly, if/how it can be optimised, what good features to include, or anything else you think might be of help? Many thanks Martin

Best Ways to Handle a Website for Different Country Locations?
Currently our website is being redesigned into a CMS for our Headquarters in the US. We have three other locations. Germany, UK and Australia. Each Location has there own domain and hosting in there designated country. How safe will it be to upload our New Headquarters site to each of our different locations? I would like to stay uniform throughout. The content would be similar, but translated to the correct language. And some of the products would be different. Will this be a pretty easy process and will this cause any duplication issues? Are there any suggestions or MUST DO's for localization websites? The website is being designed with Wordpress and Magento as a custom CMS.
