DNS Settings went wrong....
-
Hi,
I'm going to have to give you a little bit of a back story here...
In July last year we launched a brand new website, www.turnkeylandlords.co.uk. It was on a new domain.
The IT department set it live, and unfortunately messed up the DNS settings so that the site was launched under the wrong domain, smartloan.co.uk.
This error was rectified within hours.
Unfortunately in those few hours, Google indexed it!
I then had to set up webmaster tools for both domains, so I could use the 'remove URLs' tool in there, to remove all the URLs from the smartloan domain.
That all worked fine, the Landlords site was probably set back a bit, but we're now achieving some quite good results for it.
2 weeks ago we launched Smartloan as a product, and of course launched the website we've been working on for months...
You guessed it! Google is now looking for all those old Landlords pages under Smartloan.
My first thought is that we should do 301s. Would that be the best course of action, do you think? Webmaster tools has found 25 of them so far, but I know there are more - the Landlords site launched with about 90 pages...
And where should I send the 301's? To the Landlords site, or to the smartloan root?
Is there anything else I should do?
Thanks for your help!

Thank you again, Scott!

You can safely mark them as "fixed" since there is no other website linking to those pages. They aren't actually broken links.
Don't worry about doing a 'change of address' now.
If you feel my answer is appropriate, please select "Good Answer".
Thanks.

Thanks for replying Scott!
In webmaster tools there are 25 crawl errors. These are all pages that never actually existed on that site. Like I say the IT department messed up the DNS when they set our landlords site live - all the landlords pages were listed under the smartloan domain.
I haven't marked them as 'fixed' yet because I haven't actually fixed them (yet)!
Landlords does not reference smartloan at all - and vice versa. They are completely separate businesses (though owned by the same holding company).
I haven't done a change of address - maybe I should have done this back in July 2012 when this problem first happened?? All I did then was to noindex the urls in smartloan's robots.txt, then in WMT I did the remove urls thing, which worked back in July.
What is concerning me is whether this will affect smartloan - as a business it will pretty much depend on natural search visits, and won't survive without it...
Thank you again for replying and for your reassurance that it probably isn't something to worry about - my developer says the same thing, so maybe I'll just let sleeping dogs lie and hope for the best!
Have a great evening (or morning/afternoon if you're in a different time zone!!!)

When you say: "Google is now looking for all those old Landlords pages under Smartloan." Do you mean in GWT you are seeing broken links reported?
After marking those URLs ask "fixed" in GWT, do they come back again as broken links a week or so later?
Are there any references to the smartloan site from the landlord site that are not supposed to be there?
Did you do a "Change of Address" in GWT or just request to block certain URLs? If you did a Change of Address, you might want to check to see if that is still in your GWT settings and remove it.
Otherwise, I imagine after a few weeks, the GWT will just clear up naturally by itself. It probably is not an issue to be concerned about.

What's wrong with the algorithm?
Is it possible that Google is penalising a specific page and in the same time it shows unrelated page in the search results? "rent luxury car florence" shows https://lurento.com/city/munich/on the 2nd page (that's Munich, Germany) and in the same time completely ignores the related page https://lurento.com/city/florence/ How I can figure out if the specific page has been trashed and why? Thanks,

URL Parameters Settings in WMT/Search Console
On an large ecommerce site the main navigation links to URLs that include a legacy parameter. The parameter doesn’t actually seem to do anything to change content - it doesn’t narrow or specify content, nor does it currently track sessions. We’ve set the canonical for these URLs to be without the parameter. (We did this when we started seeing that Google was stripping out the parameter in the majority of SERP results themselves.) We’re trying to best strategize on how to set the parameters in WMT (search console). Our options are to set to: 1. No: Doesn’t affect page content’ - and then the Crawl field in WMT is auto-set to ‘Representative URL’. (Note, that it's unclear what ‘Representative URL’ is defined as. Google’s documentation suggests that a representative URL is a canonical URL, and we've specifically set canonicals to be without the parameter so does this contradict? ) OR 2. ‘Yes: Changes, reorders, or narrows page content’ And then it’s a question of how to instruct Googlebot to crawl these pages: 'Let Googlebot decide' OR 'No URLs'. The fundamental issue is whether the parameter settings are an index signal or crawl signal. Google documents them as crawl signals, but if we instruct Google not to crawl our navigation how will it find and pass equity to the canonical URLs? Thoughts? Have I set up my structured data correctly, the testing tool suggests not?
Hi, I've recently marked up some Events for a client in hope that they'll appear as rich snippets in ther SERPS. I have access to their Google Search Console so used the Data Highlighter facility to mark them up, rather than the Raven plugin available for WordPress sites like this. I completed this on 10th July and the snippets are yet to appear - I understand that this can take time and there are no guarantees - but as a novice it would be reassuring if someone can advise that I have done this correctly. We did incidentally resubmit a sitemap after completing this task, but I'm not sure if that makes any difference. I've read that it's the structured data testing tool that I need to use to test my markup, but when I input the urls below, the tool doesn't tell me a lot, which either suggests I've marked it up incorrectly, or don't know how to read it! http://www.ad-esse.com/events/19th-august-2015-reducing-costs-changing-culture-improving-services/

Google Disavow wrong Sample URLs
Sometime last year we were penalized for unnatural links by Google. We followed a couple of good posts on MOZ on how to go about correcting all of this (Excel Showing work, Google Docs, Ahrefs, semrush, etc...) and submitted a reconsideration request as well as a list of urls using Disavow Tool. So today, about 20 days later, we get a reply from Google stating that we still have some links that are outside their quality guidelines with 3 examples. Problem is, none of the 3 examples they listed have our website on them. I even did a View Source and checked all our inbound link reports for these websites. All of the 3 examples are Lawyer / Legal Advise websites and ours has nothing to do with this. Any ideas on how to reply and ask them to double check? Maybe they mixed up with another account they were working on at the same time.

Wrong page in serps
Hi
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | niclaus78
I've been working with a law firm's website for a couple of years and we've encounter a problem. The pages were divided to target employers and employees separately. For the very targeted keywords mentioning either employees or employers everything was good but for broader less targeted keywords e.g unfair dismissal keywords chooses either one or the other which is a problem. Now I created this ''bridge'' pages where all the topics are explained and then users are directed to and then they will chose where to go. the problem is a lot of off page was created during this years either targeting on or the other. What I plan to do is: -Create a new site map and changing the priority, so the new pages will have a priority 1 and the others less. - bookmarks, articles, etc will be targeting now to the new pages. I place the new pages linked from the home page so that they get the link juice of the home page and they are also now more a category page in the map, so a level up comparing to the previous ones. Questions: 1- Is it worthwhile adding a rel canonical tag to the new pages and rel alternate to previous pages, or if its not a question of duplicate content it shouldn't have an impact? What other things should I take into consideration? Thanks a lot. nico0 -
DNS or 301 Website Redirect
We are running a marketplace site, so we have thousands of vendors selling their products on our site. Each vendor has a Profile page and we are soon to launch a premium store-front that is white label. Many of these vendors will want to point a custom url to their premium store-front (which is a sub domain of the marketplace) and we are trying to get an understanding of how we should instruct them to point their url in a way that will give the main marketplace site the seo juice. We also want to understand what will show up in the address bar. Will it be their url or our sub domain? Will any of the marketplace seo juice boost their url local listing status?

How to Set Custom Crawl Rate in Google Webmaster Tools?
This is really silly question to set custom crawl rate in Google webmaster tools. Any one can find out that section under setting tab. But, I have confusion to decide number for request per second and second between requests text field. I want to set custom crawl rate for my eCommerce website. I checked my Google webmaster tools and find out as attachment. So, Can I use this facility to improve my crawling? 6233755578_33ce83bb71_b.jpg
