B2B International Subdirectory - How Unique is Unique?
-
With the power to upload unique xml sitemaps for a subdirectory targeting the UK, geo-target the UK in WebmasterTools, and the ability to adjust content to adhere to en-gb standards, would it still be essential for a site to re-write all of it's content if it wanted to rank well or could we just use the same content as our en-us pages with the dialect changes and other tools mentioned above?
Not interested in unique TLDs or subdomains.

Appreciate the feedback, Mike. I'll take a closer look at SAP.

I understand that you don't want them to have a different experience; however, you should want them to have a unique experience.
If you are just doing it for Google, I would read the link I included in my original post, which states, "...in some cases, content is deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt
to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic. Deceptive practices like this can result in a poor user experience, when a visitor sees substantially the same content repeated within a set of search results." and "In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed
entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results."Here is an example - SAP provides business software solutions globally. They have MANY versions of their website. Look at the subtle difference between content, images, etc. SAP-US and SAP-UK. They have the same type of pages on both sites, but the content and positioning is slightly different.
I understand that you are saying your visitors want the same end result whether that is a product or service from your company. You may just want to try having a landing page specific to the UK? You could design it like your homepage and then have it link to content throughout the rest of your site (the same stuff you are linking to for US based customers). You would then want to add domain.com/uk to all of the UK based business directories and such. Maybe create a Facebook page that is for that UK based domain?
Hope this helps. It is a good idea to target other areas... I am just saying that if you start duplicating your content, you could run into trouble with Google rather quickly.
Good luck.

But really, I don't want the user to have a different experience. We are doing this solely for the purpose of getting more traction in the UK. We've built amazing sites in the US with tons of pages and why not have UK visitors receive the same pages? The content isn't specific to any country. We don't mention locations.
So really we are just doing this for Google.
-
I guess it depends on the extent of changes you make when you say you would modify it for dialect changes.
Google refers to duplicate content as, "Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably
similar."So, if you are changing a handful of words/phrases and just changes the location from X to Y, that probably wouldn't be very unique. You want to keep in mind that not only do you want to create unique content for search engines, but you want your users to see unique content as well. For instance, if a visitor was on your site and they were looking at your office locations and read your US page, then your UK page and they were almost identical, that would provide for a poor user experience.
I would suggest that you rewrite them to be as unique as you can. Can you get by with just changing the dialect and location on those pages? - maybe; however from a user standpoint that would not be good form.
Hope this helps.

International SEO errors
Hello, In a muddle here. A website has a .co.uk and a .com version. They want to target the UK market and the USA market respectively. The content for the UK version has been localised for the UK audience (e.g. spellings etc) but the content is the same in both sites. There are errors in .co.uk version in webmaster tools : International Targeting | Language > 'en' - no return tags__URLs for your site and alternate URLs in 'en' that do not have return tags.**Q 1) What does this mean?**I can see that both the .com and .co.uk version has only this in place:**2) Should they actually have respectively?**3) Do they also need rel=canonical from the .co.uk to the .comAny help would be appreciated.

Search visibility increase with international SEO
Hi Moz Community, I am wondering if there is any tool and/or any sort of standard increase in search visibility I can assume that we will have with our website if we expand to start targeting Spanish with our site. At the moment we receive about 6000-7000 visits a day with 75% of that coming from the US and UK. I am wondering is there any way to make a rough assumption on visibility that will increase by launching a new Spanish speaking website. It would be a subdirectory, not a subdomain or gTLD. I am struggling to find a concrete answer on this and i'd like to make a semi-accurate forecast of the traffic we can expect based on the increase in search visibility that our Spanish language site will provide us. Thanks

Is International Geotargeting with Duplicate Content Effective?
A company located in Canada is currently targeting Canada through the geotargeting setting in Google Webmaster Tools. Google.ca rankings are good, but Google.com rankings are not. The company would like to gain more traction for US people using google.com. The idea on the table is to set up a subfolder www.domain.com/us/ and use WMT to designate this version for the US. Here's the kicker: the content is exactly the same. Will Google consider the US version duplicate content? Is this an effective way to target US and Canada at the same time? Is it better to forget a duplicate US site altogether and use the "unlisted" setting in WMT?

Need advice - International SEO strategy
Hello Moz ! I've been working for some months on a very interesting SEO project. I even opened some discussions on it (Multi Regional website - Folder strategy, Multi Company websites) with amazing feedbacks from the community. INITIAL PROJECT Set up an international website with different subsidiaries name, 1 person to manage the whole web, different locations / regions / languages and same products. INITIAL IDEAS For the beginning of the project we opened a main website in .com with subfolders for the other subsidiaries .com/es ... However our business is mainly in English so we decided to focus harder (closing the .com/uk, using a unic com/blog, opening more pages etc.) on the main domain in .com CURRENT ISSUE How to rank locally our services with: Main domain in .com Last Google updates against link building Most of customers searching in English in different countries Company working in more than 80 countries, through 13 subsidiaries **IDEA ** I was thinking about using our blog to focus 3 months on a thematic around one service (blog post with link to the services article on our website, guest blogging with link to a blog post, discussions on Linkedin around the thematics, etc.) QUESTION What could be the best strategy to rank locally our products in this case ? Hope you can share your best advise. I guess I'm not the unique one to face this issue. So it'll be good to make a good strategy for all our community 🙂 Tks a lot ! Florian
