Is z-indexing a black-hat trick?
-
I use z-indexing for a floating bar that scrolls vertically along the side of my page. I'm not hiding anything. Is this safe or not?
-
You're good then. It's the negative z index implementations that have issues.
-
It's completely visible. I'm just using "z-index: 1;" I'm not using a negative number. It's for a java floating box that scrolls along side the page with the user. It just makes the floating box stay on top, but it's only covering a couple pixel widths of white space behind it.

you say its for a floating bar that scrolls vertically. Is it hidden from a site visitor or visible? If it's a negative z index, it could be "perceived" as a problem by Google's automated system. They claim that your intent counts. Except I've never seen Google guarantee that they'll assign a human to review every single site that is flagged with potential problems. This is why you "should probably be okay if you're not using it to fool Google" but where they consistently communicate "we have a right to do what we want to do" and thus, when in doubt, consider the risk/reward to make your decisions.

Page Indexing without content
Hello. I have a problem of page indexing without content. I have website in 3 different languages and 2 of the pages are indexing just fine, but one language page (the most important one) is indexing without content. When searching using site: page comes up, but when searching unique keywords for which I should rank 100% nothing comes up. This page was indexing just fine and the problem arose couple of days ago after google update finished. Looking further, the problem is language related and every page in the given language that is newly indexed has this problem, while pages that were last crawled around one week ago are just fine. Has anyone ran into this type of problem?

Google Indexing Desktop & Mobile Versions
We have a relatively new site and I have noticed recently that Google seems to be indexing both the mobile and the desktop version of our site. There are some queries where the mobile version will show up and sometimes both mobile and desktop show up. This can't be good. I would imagine that what is supposed to happen is that the desktop version is the one that should be indexed (always) and browser detection will load the mobile version where appropriate once the user is on the site. Do you have any advice on what we should do to solve this problem as we are a bit stuck?

Google Indexing of Site Map
We recently launched a new site - on June 4th we submitted our site map to google and almost instantly had all 25,000 URL's crawled (yay!). On June 18th, we made some updates to the title & description tags for the majority of pages on our site and added new content to our home page so we submitted a new sitemap. So far the results have been underwhelming and google has indexed a very low number of the updated pages. As a result, only a handful of the new titles and descriptions are showing up on the SERP pages. Any ideas as to why this might be? What are the tricks to having google re-index all of the URLs in a sitemap?

Bing is not Indexing my site.
Hi, My website is four months old and has more than 8000 pages. Bing has indexed only 8 pages till date and Google also keeps playing hide and seek with it. There was a time when google indexed almost all the pages of my site but now there are only 5000 pages indexed. Moreover when I check my site on google (by typing site:socktail.com), it shows only 26 pages. Please let me know what should I do. If somebody wants to take a look, my website is http://socktail.com Thanks

Importance of an optimized home page (index)
I'm helping a client redesign their website and they want to have a home page that's primarily graphics and/or flash (or jquery). If they are able to optimize all of their key sub-pages, what is the harm in terms of SEO?
