Branded keywords
-
I'm trying to understand this concept a little further.
Say if I create a branded keyword, "dc widgets"
I then start to add keywords such as "maker" "toy" and apply the branded keyword to it.
Does this mean that they then become "maker dc widgets" and "toy dc widgets" ?
What purpose does branded keywords offer?
-
Howdy,
If your branded rule is "dc widgets", then yes - the phrases "maker dc widgets" and "toy dc widgets" will both be considered branded keywords.
Branded keywords are important for many different reasons. As opposed to non-branded traffic, branded keywords are an indication of true business visibility. If folks are searching specifically for your business, this is a good indication of health as opposed to random keyword searches.
Here's an excerpt from a post we published when SEOmoz introduced branded rules into the web app:
Keywords related to your brand tend to show up at the end of the conversion funnel, when visitors are already aware and interested. They’re more specific and unique, often based on company and domain names, key products, and variations/misspellings of those names and products. They aren’t subject to the fluctuations caused by search algorithms in the same way that non-branded keywords are. This makes them useful as indicators of long-term strength and popularity. For that reason, most sites should see a decent portion of traffic coming from brand-related keywords.

For better or worse, Google loves brands. The more branded traffic you receive the easier it is to succeed in other areas... typically.

Well branded keywords in SEOmoz have simple meaning... for instance you are receiving traffic from tons of different key phrases from organic, paid and other channels... in organic you are receiving traffic from different keywords some includes your company name and others will be the niche related information keywords...
Branded keywords are the keywords that contain your brand name so that you can get to know that how much traffic is coming on your website with your brand name and how much is coming from other organic key phrases...

I have a new website and would like to use the keywords my competitors are using and was wondering the best way to take a look using Moz Pro?
The website is www.fapwrap.com - it's a new adult wall decals website. [editor's note: may not be safe for some workplaces] The wall decals we have are obviously a bit more niche than the bigger competitors, but I want to get into the first page to see how it helps us. I'm slowly taking over some kws like "xbox wraps" and "ps4 wraps" but those have low search volume and I feel like "wall decals" will help - though it's highly competitive. Suggestions? I just kinda want to plug in my competition and pick from their list of existing kws..... Ha.

What's up with Yahoo and Bing in my keyword rankings?
SEOmoz is good I've learned a lot from it. I'm on my 3rd month and now have 8 keywords in top 50 for one site and 1 keyword in top 50 for another. This is for Google US. For Bing and Yahoo! US however I am still not in the top 50 for anything. I have read elsewhere that meta-tag page words can be regarded by these engines as a spam signal. In my meta I have used competative keywords that are relevant to my content, some of which are in the body, but are not my actual targeted keywords as a red-herring to potential competitors. Also might be usefull for other smaller places that still use meta-tags. Could not appearing in BingHoo! have something to do with their alogrithms and the meta-tags? or is it an SEOmoz issue? I have another question also. The " / " after a domain name doesn't appear in my Firefox address bar (I think I did a 301 redirect), but when I copy and paste it into an entry box (e.g. for a link submission) it puts the " / " there at the end which I take off. Does this make any difference?

Terminology -branded vs non-branded
I never say nor used these terms before joining SEO moz. can someone explain what this is and how it affects your analytics. SEOmoz actually has a way to select branded words and treats them differently. What is the point or benefit of this? How do you use this to help you with analytical deconstruction.
