Traffic stats disaster
-
Hi,
We have recently moved a few old websites to an existing one and redesigned the existing website too.
The visits in Analytics have fallen though the roof in the last few days.
I would expect the traffic to have gone up because visitors from the old websites should now be on the redesigned one.
Not sure what the problem is entirely.
GA code is on the site but not before the closing head where I asked for it to be put. It's just before closing body tag. Does it make a difference? (It's a CMS site). GA code must be working because visits are being recorded (tens rather than the expected hundreds).
Redirects have not been done properly - not sure what IT have done there. Would the lack of proper redirects be the sole reason for the drop? I am still hassling for 301's to be sorted.
Thanks all

Thanks.
Just had some light shed on matter though - the GA code was only partly correct. There was one lot of code on some pages and another on the others. Unfortunately the majority had the wrong code and it has now been updated. I found the missing traffic on one of our old GA numbers.
Still working on redirects though but they can't be done through our CMS - it's an ancient version of Alterian and one we are locked into for some time :(.

Hi Houses, and your GA code is probably fine. It's javascript, so nothing wrong with it being before closing body. I actually don't even think it matters as much with the asynchronous tracking codes.
and my first reaction to this read was the same as EGOL's. Permalinks changed, old ones didn't get redirected. This is essentially like starting over (for those pages, not entire domain), if it's a new url, it's a new page to search engines.
and just so you know, most CMS' make it darn easy to implement redirects, or usually your hosting account will have some kind 301 tool. It's literally as easy as typing the old url, the one that replaced it, then clicking "ok".

Thanks Ergol.
The site is indeed a candidate for lots of problems (poor meta data, duplicate content etc) but they will have to be sorted in time. Roger Bot is crawling as we speak and I'm sure he will be deeply unimpressed!
The IT dept have only done a few redirects and these seem to be a bit random in the choice of which to do and where to redirect them to! I would love IT to sort the redirects as soon as possible and if I can prove that the lack of them is very detrimental then they may do them quicker....
Obviously there can be other reasons for a traffic drop but I guess I need to know whether the GA code will be affected by where it is and whether it is reporting true stats or not. If the position of the code doesn't affect the stats very much, I can assume the redirects are a major contributor. If the code is not collecting data properly, it will be hard to go to IT and say their lack of redirects are affecting the visitor numbers adversely.
Hope that makes sense...

Would the lack of proper redirects be the sole reason for the drop?
Many things could cause a traffic drop. It sounds like your site is a candidate for lots of problems.
I would hire a pro to review the site since the site has these obvious problems - my bet is that there are other problems and things that could be improved.
I think it would be money well spent.

My beta site (beta.website.com) has been inadvertently indexed. Its cached pages are taking traffic away from our real website (website.com). Should I just "NO INDEX" the entire beta site and if so, what's the best way to do this? Please advise.

Discontinuing a site & Redirecting Traffic to an Internal Page
We are wondering the best way to redirect the traffic from a site that will no longer exist. The Scenario:
Technical SEO | | TopFloor
Our client wants to discontinue this website http://www.animalcarepackaging.com/. We’d like to redirect the traffic from this site to an internal page on our client's other website: http://www.glenroy.com/packaging/. This internal page is the most appropriate to the content that appears on animalcarepackaging.com (as opposed to just the entire site glenroy.com). Possible Options We Are Considering:
Option 1: Keep hosting animalcarepackaging.com and add a 301 redirect for all pages to glenroy.com/packaging/. Our concern with this option is that Google/Bing will see animalcarepackaging.com as a gateway, which could hurt glenroy.com. Option 2: Keep hosting animalcarepackaging.com and add a 301 redirect so all pages are sent to glenroy.com/packaging/; AND file a change of address with Google and Bing. We believe this will allow people who have bookmarked animalcarepackaging.com to go to glenroy.com/packaging/; while people searching for animalcarepackaging.com will go to glenroy.com's home page. We would augment this by posting a message on the homepage of animalcarepackaging.com notifiying users that the site will be discontinued and info will be found at glenroy.com/packaging. Option 3: Do a change of address with Google/Bing and send all traffic to glenroy.com (rather than an internal page). Post information on the homepage of animalcarepackaging.com that the site will be discontinued on X-date, and info about animalcarepackaging.com will be able to be found at glenroy.com/packaging. Looking for feedback on our options and suggestions on how this can be handled.0 -
Rebranding and New Domain Effects on Search Traffic
If we are to change our branding and set up a new domain name to match that branding, we will need to set up redirects for all URLs. The new website would exactly match the old. Using HTACCESS we can redirect all URLs fairly easily. Will this exercise cause use to lose authority?

Traffic drop with no explaination
Hello Everyone, I made a post a few months ago about one of my sites, Poker On A Mac dropping off the face of google. I found out that it was hacked, and redirecting traffic from google to other, pharmacy websites. Doing some research, I found out it was the WordPress PharmaHack, and we ended up recovering from it. Now, since October 23rd traffic has went down again mainly organic traffic, I tried to see if it was hacked again, with the same thing and their was nothing I noticed. I was wondering if anyone could give me any insights as to why this happened? Thanks Zach CwFda.png

Targeting US search traffic
Hello, I've noticed the site I'm working on gets about 30-40% of Google organic search traffic from the US and the rest comes from around the world. All the site's customers are in the US and so the thought is to focus getting traffic more from the US. I know google webmaster tools has a geo targeting mechanism for the site in question but what I don't want to do is turn that on and then traffic from non-US sources goes away; I suppose that's not so bad if traffic from the US bumps up accordingly. Do you have any experience on this area? thanks -Mike
