What happens when I redirect an entire site to an established page on another site?
-
Hi There,
I have a website which is dedicated to selling ONE product (in different forms) or my main brand site. It is branded similarly, targets similar keywords, and gets some traffic which convert to leads. Additionally, the auxiliary site has a Google Rank 2 in its own right.
I am thinking of consolidating this "auxillary" site to the specific product page on my main site.
The reason I am considering doing this is to give a "boost" to the main product page on our main site which has many core keywords sitting with SERP ranking of between 11-20 (so not in first 10)
Because this auxiliary site it gets traffic and leads in its own right, I don't want this to be to the detriment of my leads overall.
Question is - if I 301 redirect the entire domain from my auxillary site to the equivalent product on my main site am I likely to see a large "boost" to that product page? (i.e. will I likely see my ranking rise from 11 - 20 significantly)

my take from my experience:
if you are already ranking for that key term, then you redirect it to a related topic, you'll rank on that spot within a week.
lasting on that position is a different story especially if you stop linking. You can drop within a month or 3 months down the road or you can stay put for years. Not really something I can predict as it is a keyword to keyword, niche to niche basis.

People can only speculate on this and those speculations might be wrong.
However, I believe that the page on your main site would get a TINY boost. This auxiliary website is only a PR2? That is not very much.
But, how much of a boost you get will depend upon the strength of the auxiliary site and how badly your primary site is being beaten by other sites in your niche.
Also if the auxiliary site has the same links as the main site then you are not really adding anything new of value.
How much of a boost you will get is unknown unless you do the redirect. It might move you up a couple positions if you are on the second page. I would be really surprised if it moved you up any more than that.
If I had a main site on the second page I would put my energy into adding new content and promoting it until it completely eliminated the value of the auxiliary site.

Hard to give a definitive answer on this. So many factors to consider here. Have you run an analysis on opensiteexplorer for the sites in spot 1-10? If so, how close were you from a DA, PA, Linking Root Domains, etc standpoint? If the leads from the aux site are not that significant then it would be a good experiment. Of course you could always consider doing some link earning to the main site page. If you think you are close then 5-10 new links might seal the deal. If I were you I would probably do the 301 based on the info you gave. However, then I would get focused on some linking earning to that page. Building up some new link equity is probably your only chance at really making a dent. Spot 11-20 can be further than it seems from where you might want to be. From experience I have seen there is a huge difference when you have a site that falls out of spots 3 and 4 to spots 6-8.

Competing Pages on Ecommerce Site - Very Frustrating
We have multiple issues with this situation. We rank #1 for "Lace Fabric", #3 for "Lace Trim", and #80 for "Lace". We also rank for "Lace Ribbon", and "Lace Appliques". The Lace Fabric and Lace Trim pages have plenty of backlinks, wherein may lie the problem. We have a similar issue for "Satin". "Silk Satin", "Polyester Satin", "Satin Trim", "Satin Ribbon", etc. This is a very annoying and common pattern. Our backlink profile is sterling, and our competitors with inferior backlink profiles and branded search are outranking us. We outrank them across the board for 2 word terms. Based on my evaluation of TF/CF, PA/DA, Content, etc., we should be on page 1 for "Lace". IMHO, these pages are competing for the head term. Any ideas on how to eliminate this issue to rank for head terms?

Can Googlebots read canonical tags on pages with javascript redirects?
Hi Moz! We have old locations pages that we can't redirect to the new ones because they have AJAX. To preserve pagerank, we are putting canonical tags on the old location pages. Will Googlebots still read these canonical tags if the pages have a javascript redirect? Thanks for reading!

301 redirect for page 2, page 3 etc of an article or feed
Hey guys, We're looking to move a blog feed we have to a new static URL page. We are using 301 redirects but I'm unsure of what to regarding page 2, page 3 etc. of the feed. How do I make sure those urls are being redirected as well? For example: Moving FloridaDentist.com/blog/dental-tips/ to a new page url FloridaDentist.com/dental-tips. So, we are using a 301 on that old url to the new one. My questions is what to do with the other pages like FloridaDentist.com/blog/dental-tips/page/3. How do we make sure that page is also 301'd to the new main url?

Changing title tags in well established site - should I do this gradually to avoid risk of penalty?
Hi, I'm altering title tags in a well established site (many of which are duplicates) and was wondering whether there's a risk associated with adjusting them all in one go? Should I just make gradual changes instead in case I flag anything?

Is it a problem to have too many 301 redirects within your site
my website is translated into 10+ languages, but our news articles are often only published in 1-2 languages. Currently, URLs are created in the unpublished news languages that then 301 redirect the user to main news page since the content doesnt exist in that language. Is this implementation okay or is there a preferred method we should be using so that we don't have a large number of pages on the site with redirects? Thanks!

Will thousands of redirected pages have a negative impact on the site?
A client site has thousands of pages with unoptimized urls. I want to change the url structure to make them a little more search friendly. Many of the pages I want to update have backlinks to them and good PR so I don't want to delete them entirely. If I change the urls on thousands of pages, that means a lot of 301 redirects. Will thousands of redirected pages have a negative impact on the site? Thanks, Dino

Redirecting a Page from Domain A to Domain B
We have a page on Domain A, an established and well-ranking website, that would be more appropriate on Domain B, a site that we launched about two years ago. This page ranks well, pulls nice search traffic and has traffic from external links. We would like to move the page and its traffic from Domain A to Domain B using a 301 redirect. Have you ever done this or have you heard of how it has worked for someone else? Thanks!
