Hello!
Phil just flagged this up to me. Great Question. The keyword level targeting for video is no where near as specific as Search advertising. I would say even Display Network keywords have more accuracy (which is saying quite a bit about how horrible the YouTube keyword lists are).
Phil's suggestion is excellent. I would do that in addition to taking these steps:
I would first start with a retargeting campaign with video. You can make the list in Analytics and bring it into AdWords.
Then I would make a target group based on Topic & Interest (topic being the content of the video, and interest being interest of the user). You can always go in and see where your ads are appearing and exclude, like the Display Network.
But, the first half of your question was referring to ROI and tracking. It's tricky. You have to override the system. Here's how:
Step 1. Create a mirrored landing page...a version of an existing page which you can direct all video traffic to with an unique URL. eg www.DOMAIN.com/NewLandingPageStep 2. Tweak the GA code (ONLY on the mirrored landing page) to something like this http://www.youtube.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=VideoAdsFull example below
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-123456789-1']);
_gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'Domain.com']);
_gaq.push(['_setReferrerOverride','http://www.youtube.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Video']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);})();
(no matter how hard I try, this won't format the way I want it to.
I'm sorry that looks so shitty)
Regular video traffic from the GDN should be tracked normally but if not then creating a second page and having a different dummy referrer should be easy enough.
This is the hack that one of our Google Reps provided us. I don't have much information on ROI. I haven't dedicated a great amount of time to it (which is something I need to do and figure out this month).
Hope this has helped!

Hi Dylan,
I'm afraid I don't know a great deal about this - so I've asked one of the PPC experts from Distilled to jump in too.
However .. one tip I would suggest is specifically choosing the channels and videos that you want your ads to appear on, if you can spend the time with this detail. Based on the kind of content you have and the audience it's likely to appear to - you should really consider what your target audience are likely to be searching for and watching on YouTube. Mimic their expected actions and then choose the videos you find to place your ads on.
Dependent on the keyword volume for the terms your targeting, you may not be able to get a great deal of impressions this way, but you can ensure that you're targeting the right users with excellent accuracy.
Cheers,
Phil.

Running Google Ad Grants? How Much Is Your Monthly Spend?
Hi all - here's a question for everyone running Google Ads through the Ad Grant. How much of the $10,000 available to your account per month do you actually end up spending? I'm trying to see if I am in line with others in the industry. Would you mind sharing with me the type of nonprofit and the amount you're able to spend of the grant per month, on average? Thank you!

Will pausing my AdWords PPC campaigns impact my organic rankings?
Over 95% of my revenue comes from organic search; less than 5% comes from AdWords PPC (all other sources account for about 1-2%). My ROI on AdWords is roughly zero. It's negative if you include opportunity costs. My question is: if I pause all of my AdWords campaigns, is there ANY chance that my organic rankings (and organic click-through rates) will suffer? This is really two questions. First, could Google retaliate to my reduced ad spending by dropping my rankings? Second, will searchers think differently about my organic link if they don't also see the accompanying paid link on the SERP?

How to track in Google Analytics 2 different subdomains (one for website, the other for PPC landing pages)
Hello Mozers! I have a website with organic visits/goals on www.site.com and a few AdWords Campaign landing pages on lp.site.com whose goals are tracked with both adwords conversion monitoring AND analytics (not imported from analytics into Adword). The landing pages of the campaign have nothing to do with the web site (different cms, they don't link each other, totally isolated) and viceversa. Given that, what would it be the best practice to configure Google Analytics to track the website (www.site.com) AND a PPC campagin (lp.site.com)? I have been told to set up different views of the same property, but do I really need that? Please let me know what are you thinking. Thank you very much. DoMiSoL Rossini

PPC - Fixing the campaign so ads always rank in positions 1 - 3
Hi everyone, I have more of a SEO background than a PPC one so excuse me if this question seems simple. I have inherited a Google Adwords campaign and want to accomplish the following Fix the campaign so the ads only appear in positions 1 – 3. The campaign came with a relatively good structure. Is there some way I can fix the settings to accomplish this? Conversion rates are high but quality scores vary from 6 -10 Thanks

Convince me I need a professional PPC service provider
Very new to SEO and somewhat new to PPC but I have managed a few campaigns before for an old website. I am very good with numbers, calculating ratios, conversions, etc. I have a strong analytical and business mind and the theory behind PPC makes sense to me. I know my target audience very well. I am an expert in the that field but I am not an expert in PPC. I am just starting out with a very small website advertising myself as a professional consultant in my field. The thought of spending extra money on a PPC guru when that money could go into my site or pay for visitors is a little scary. Do you think I can learn and teach myself all the tricks of PPC or is this an area where it really makes sense to hire an expert to do the work for me? My budget would be small at first ($500 or less per month) so every little dollar helps. Thanks.
