Todo steps when you switch products offline.
-
Dear SEOMoz community,
By means of this message I hope someone can clear this up for me.
Let's say you have a web shop and sometimes you have to put a product offline, because they are not in production anymore.
Could anyone tell me they activities that you have to undertook when you switch products to offline? Think about the redirection of URL, etc.
Preferably a specific answer will be most appreciated :).
Thanks in advance,
Martin

The process we use with several clients follows this flow
is the product out of stock temporarily?
-Yes, leave page up but remove from category pagesis product out of stock permenantly?
-Yes, redirect to category page and remove category page links (if not done automatically). -
That should do it. Nothing else really to consider as long as the page no longer has internal links going to it.
On a side note, ensure that the redirect is relevant. For example, if you were a visitor to a website and thought you were looking for a torch, you wouldn't be happy if you were redirected to a bird cage. This would usually just result in them leaving your site and would probably have an adverse effect on your site's performance as drop rates would increase.
If something really cannot be redirected to another similar page then redirecting to the homepage is your best bet.

Thanks for your quick responce, I appreciate.
Is that everything what I should do? Or are there other aspects I have to consider?
We are redirecting them like u said.
Best regards,
Martin

I'm assuming by taking them offline you mean discontinuing the product permanently? If so, it is important that you 301 redirect (always 301 redirect unless the product is coming back at some point) the page to the nearest closest product or if there is nothing similar that you sell, redirecting it back to the closest category page.
Hope this helps a little?
Matt

Discontinued Product on a Ecommerce site
To create a better customer experience, rather then remove discontinued product from a site, we remove many links from the page, and remove it from the navigation of the site, but we keep the url and show that the product can no longer be purchased. This keeps the links, keeps the content, and gives customers the opportunity to find other products we have. But I often wonder if we should allow this items to just 404 and be done with them. Here is an example. http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-dyn-bm5a-list. Any advice?

Amazon Product Descriptions and our website's product descriptions
I am updating our product descriptions site-wide. I wanted to also update our amazon listings for those same products. Is that considered duplicate content if it would be on amazon and our site? Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to do that? Is google product ads also a problem?

Repetition of Product Names considered Spamming?
We have long lists of products are displayed on individual web pages ... with the only variations being in product dimensions and prices. Could the Search Engines consider these lengthy lists of products for sale to be attempted spamming efforts? (Example: http://www.just-insulation.com/overview_of_celotex_product_buy_cheapest.html) Thank you.

What steps can you take to help a site that does not change
Hi, i am working on a product and services website www.clairehegarty.co.uk but the problem i have is, the site does not really change. The home page stays the same and the only time it changes is when a new course is advertised. The most important page on the website is http://www.clairehegarty.co.uk/virtual-gastric-band-with-hypnotherapy but we have seen the site drop in rankings because the page is not being updated. This page has all the information you could want on weight loss but we have seen the page drop from number one in google to number four. I would like to know what steps we should take to increase our rankings in google and would be grateful for your suggestions. If i put in articles on the site, had a section where we put a new article every week, would this then get google to visit the whole site more and move our pages back up the rankings, or should we be looking at doing other things.

Product Duplicate Content Issue with Google Shopping
I have a site with approx 20,000 products. These products are resold to hundreds of other companies and are fed from one database therefore the content is duplicated many many times. To overcome this, we are launching the site with noindex meta tags on all product pages. (In phase 2 we will begin adding unique content for every product eek) However, we still want them to appear in Google Shopping. Will this happen or will it have to wait until we remove the noindex tags?

"Products 1-20" text in the Serp Results
We have e-commence site (zen-cart) and we use our category pages (which has the list of the products) as landing pages. In the Serp results our link is showing up like this Our Page Title www.link.com Rich snip stuff Products 1 - 40 of 93 - Meta Description text I just wanted to know where its getting the "Products 1 - 40 of 93" from, and can it be removed (if we wanted to)? On the landing page say "Displaying 1 to 40 (of 93 products)", But i looked in to the source and it does not say "Products 1 - 40 of 93" anywhere, so google must be coming up with that text. I have noticed other zen-cart sites have the same text, and other e-commence sites have something similar like " 20+ Products"

Additional product information: the product's sales page or a blog post?
I want to go in-depth about different customizations for custom caps, which is one of the products we offer. I just don't know whether it would be better--from an SEO perspective--to expand the caps sales page we already have or to write a blog post to give the site another valuable indexed page. From a user standpoint, I don't think it's as important, because if I do it the blog way, I can't just put a link on the page saying, Want more customizations? Visit our blog post. Any opinions?

Switching Site to a Domain Name that's in Use
I'm comfortable with the steps of moving a site to a new domain name as recommended by Google. However, in this case, the domain name I'm asked to move to is not really "new" ... meaning it's currently hosting a website and has been for a long time. So my question is, do I do this in steps and take the old website down first in order to "free up" the domain name in they eyes of search engines to avoid large numbers of 404s and then (in step 2) switch to the "new" domain in a few months? Thanks.
