Is joomla better than wordpress let me know your thoughts
-
Hi, i am wondering if wordpress is better than joomla. We have been having a talk and been wondering if our main site www.in2town.co.uk should stay in joomla or if we should think about moving it over to wordpress.
I would like to hear what people think, if wordpress is better than joomla for a magazine or if we should stick with joomla and forget about moving over to wordpress.
It would be great to hear people's opinion and maybe some examples of popular magazines or newspaper sites that are using wordpress instead of joomla.
It would also be interesting to know how hard or how easy it is to move across to wordpress from joomla.
Would value your thoughts on this issue and find out which is better for seo.
many thanks

It depends on the use you are going to give to the CMS and what kind of capabilities you are looking for. Here is a link to a resource site were you can compare any CMS side by side and have a glance at it's features and capabilities compared in a friendly manner: http://www.cmsmatrix.org/
And here is a place where you can test them: http://opensourcecms.com/
Good luck with your choice!

Wordpress is more user friendly (my opinion).
You not will see big difference in SEO between Wordpress and Joomla.
Example of big site based on Worpdress - http://www.smashingmagazine.com/ - Alexa Rank - 1159

Tim Ellis,
I will start this message by saying, that we have built a lot of custom WordPress sites lately, so we are a bit partial.
Saying that though, we have found that a lot of people like WordPress, because they have found it as an easier to use(content management system), especially once you start utilizing some of the advance features such as Gravity Forms.
From an SEO perspective, Wordpress allows for you to easy create pages and posts easily, as well as optimize each one of them for search. There are tons of SEO plug-ins such as Yoast, head-space, all-in-one SEO, and so on.
However, I tend to agree with everyone else on here if you are using Joomla and have no problems with it, why switch? If you're simply talking about making the switch from one CMS to another, just because someone said so...I would not do it.

After speaking to our hosting company they feel that it would be better to stick with joomla although they are a fan of wordpress.
I have read a lot about people moving from Joomla but I feel after what i have read on here and heard what our hosting company have said, we will stick with what we have

Wordpress and Joomla are both just tools at the end of the day and can both be effective depending on how you are using them. I personally have had negative experiences trying to optimise existing joomla sites (complicated templates, weird plugin functionality, slow load times etc) but I am sure those more experienced with it would say these things can be overcome.
The real questions are why you want to switch systems and how much effort it would require to do so? It looks like you have quite a bit of content in your site, so migrating to wordpress would likely need a bit of technical experience and time to complete. I am sure there are scripts around that will help in that process, but migrating a db from one system to another usually has a few gotcha moments along the way! You would also need to account for any changes in url structures and 301ing the old urls to the new. All in all not a decision to be taken lightly.
If there is not a specific reason you want to switch (ie something you are trying to do in joomla that is proving impossible for some reason) I would think that switching platforms might be more hassle than it is worth. As for one or the other being more customisable and/or secure than the other, I don't think there is really any difference between them, both are fully customisable and are as secure (or not secure) as you make them if following best practices.

hi, thanks for that. we have a dedicated server. my hosting company have sent me a report where they say joomla is better than wordpress when it comes to customizing the site and security.
-
I started loving joomla because now it's really easy to set up. It gives you more possibilities for customization and hosting I think. Also, you have full control over templates. In WP, this is sometimes limited (not sure, wordpress.com and wordress.org makes the difference I think). Now, while Joomla is fully open source, I think you have to pay to be able to fully customize WP (correct me if i'm wrong).
But just looking at the nature of your site I think WP is probably a really good choice and you'll have better performance and less maintenance trouble if you go for dedicated hosting.

Can You Get Better Ranking/Conversion by Reducing the Number of Pages?
I am seriously considering reducing the number of pages in a section of our website. We currently have 39 webpages. I'm considering reducing it to 6. The site architecture would make more sense giving recent design changes. And we could focus more attention on improving conversions from these 6 new pages. But I'm considering doing this mainly because I think it'll help us do a better job of communicating to and converting our audience. The new pages would be longish. The existing 39 pages are by no means stubs, but these new pages would be longer. Anyway, what I want to put out for discussion is the SEO impact. What are the good SEO reasons for reducing the number of pages? Can 6 well-done pages out perform 39 pretty-well-done pages? How many queries can one page rank for well? Is this SEO suicide? Honestly, there's a part of me that cannot believe I'm saying this, but I think my heart is in the right place.

Does anyone know of a great inexpensive article writing company overseas?
Hello, I'm hoping someone here has used or knows about a content writing company overseas that is very good. We would provide a lot of the information, and they would gather the rest by internet or talking with manufacturers by skype. We need at least 200 articles written, and we're on a tight budget. The articles need to be unique content, and very helpful to users. The people or person I hire will provide the articles in Microsoft Word, I'll do the rest. So far I've posted on Elance. Any useful people, companies, or helpful hints in doing this is appreciated! Thank you.

Duplicate Page Content WordPress blog with categories?
Just got a crawl report back from SEOmoz and it gives me lots of errors for "duplicate page content". Upon investigating, I notice this is because my WP blog is setup into categories so the home page is almost identical to one of the category pages. None of my actually posts are the same but the category pages have some overlap since the same post could show up in two or more categories. Is this a problem or can I just ignore this error? Any thing I should be doing differently? Thanks!

Wordpress Security and Alternatives
No matter how secure we try to make our wordpress blogs they still got hacked. We recently got hacked(server level hacking, javascript insertion that took our server down, through the askimet plugin), anyway there was nothing really showing in the front end, no inserted links and nothing suspicious looking code. Oh well we are changing the passwords now and going through and deleting the javascript. The problem im facing is that i am handling over 100 blogs, so its very time consuming to do this. I know that once or twice a year everyone goes through a wordpress crisis but we really cant afford nor have the resources to fix it all the time. Are there any alternatives to wordpress blogs(as good as wordpress). Wordpress has been showing good results so far so it works as far as SEO goes, but we are trying to figure out what to do in order to not get hacked. Besides alternatives id like to know if there are any work arrounds to not get hacked with little maintenance needed. Any tips?

What are the best reasons not to use Wordpress as a CMS?
I'm a big fan of Wordpress (.org) as a content management system. However, I recognize that Wordpress isn't necessarily the best CMS for all ocassions. For those of you who don't like Wordpress, I'm interested in understanding your strongest reasons against. So, why not Wordpress?
