Is a directory like this white hat? Useful?
-
This is one of my competitor's backlinks:
Prices for inclusion on this page go from $50 for 6 months to $300 for a permanent listing.
Do most of you guys do paid directories like this for your SEO Clients? My gut is telling me to run away...but I don't want to miss a good opportunity if I should be taking it.
-
The directories with clear prices on the home site are not as good, because even if does not result in penalties, much of the SE can identify, and take the relevance of external links.
Furthermore, this is a directory PR 3, not so high to run any risk, if greater than or equal to 5, you could think about it.
Another aspect is it has many links, which divides the relevance of external links, one less reason to pay for it.
Hope this has helped.

at that price i would not bother.
But paid and free directories are fine, it depends on their quality on how much good rthey do, but I can not see then doing harm.
As matt cuts said, if they are charging money to be reviewed then that is fine, in fact that is good, his advice was look for diirectories that are reviewed and those that do not link to anyone or accept everyone.
But unless you are part of some automated linking scheam youy will be fine

I use a very simple litmus test: Would I personally find this directory useful?
My answer for this site is no. I can't think of a point at which I'd want to browse sites from around the world loosely based on an industry. Frankly I'm surprised this directory has so much domain authority. My guess is their value in the SE's eyes will continually drop.
-
That's what I thought. Every now and then I start to slip down that road of..."maybe I'll give this a whirl"...and then I have to kick myself and come back to earth and work on good content that will attract links naturally.

Paid directories are not beneficial the way it used to be long time ago. Any paid links is a serious no no even though the case that directory services provides is that they don't charge for links but for resource required for manual inclusion.
There are some exceptions to high quality directory such as Yahoo. One should always ask the question if this directory provides a benefit to the user and if the answer is no then a backlink from this site is worthless for both traffic and seo.

Good vs Bad Web directories
Hi this blog post Rand mentions a list of bad web directories - I asked couple of years ago if there is an updated list as some of these (Alive Directory for example) do not seem to be blacklisted anymore and are coming up in Google searches etc? It seems due to old age of the blog post (7 years ago ) the comments are not responded to. Would anyone be able to advise if which of these good directories to use? https://moz.com/blog/what-makes-a-good-web-directory-and-why-google-penalized-dozens-of-bad-ones

Dynamic Content Boxes: how to use them without get Duplicate Content Penalty?
Hi everybody, I am starting a project with a travelling website which has some standard category pages like Last Minute, Offers, Destinations, Vacations, Fly + Hotel. Every category has inside a lot of destinations with relative landing pages which will be like: Last Minute New York, Last Minute Paris, Offers New York, Offers Paris, etc. My question is: I am trying to simplify my job thinking about writing some dynamic content boxes for Last Minute, Offers and the other categories, changing only the destination city (Rome, Paris, New York, etc) repeated X types in X different combinations inside the content box. In this way I would simplify a lot my content writing for the principal generic landing pages of each category but I'm worried about getting penalized for Duplicate Content. Do you think my solution could work? If not, what is your suggestion? Is there a rule for categorize a content as duplicate (for example number of same words in a row, ...)? Thanks in advance for your help! A.

Can you use the image description for IMG ALT?
ello ello! We're running an ecommerce site with thousands of products. None of the product pages have an IMG ALT. We're been thinking about an IMG ALT rule to apply to all product page images. Every image currently has a detailed caption so the thought was, why don't we use the description as the IMG ALT? It's perfect as it explains the image. Now the thing is, the length of the description, some of them come to 150 - 200 characters with spaces. Do you think this is too much? Also, would having a caption and the IMG ALT be the same cause issues? Have you guys employed any rules for IMG ALT in a bulk way?

Advice on using the disavow tool to remove hacked website links
Hey Everyone, Back in December, our website suffered an attack which created links to other hacked webistes which anchor text such as "This is an excellent time to discuss symptoms, fa" "Open to members of the nursing/paramedical profes" "The organs in the female reproductive system incl" The links were only visible when looking at the Cache of the page. We got these links removed and removed all traces of the attack such as pages which were created in their own directory on our server 3 months later I'm finding websites linking to us with similar anchor text to the ones above, however they're linking to the pages that were created on our server when we were attacked and they've been removed. So one of my questions is does this effect our site? We've seen some of our best performing keywords drop over the last few months and I have a feeling it's due to these spammy links. Here's a website that links to us <colgroup><col width="751"></colgroup>

| http://www.fashion-game.com/extreme/blog/page-9 | If you do view source or look at the cached version then you'll find a link right at the bottom left corner. We have 268 of these links from 200 domains. Contacting these sites to have these links removed would be a very long process as most of them probably have no idea that those links even exist and I don't have the time to explain to each one how to remove the hacked files etc. I've been looking at using the Google Disavow tool to solve this problem but I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not. We haven't had any warnings from Google about our site being spam or having too many spam links, so do we need to use the tool? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Let me know if you require more details about our problem. <colgroup><col width="355"></colgroup>
