Backlinking

Dear community,
How do you deal with website that ask for return links?

It is ok to link to partner companies and related websites if you think the links are useful and they are relevant. I see this question all the time and the answer is always the same: Just use common sense.
If you have a site that sells bicycles online linking to a real estate site in Chicago and a law office in New York it is going to raise some flags.
If you have a site linking out to hundreds of other websites, ALL of which link to each other in some kind of 2-way, 3-way or more complicated network it is going to raise some flags.
If you have a store selling bicycles in Chicago that links to its other locations in other cities that is fine.
If you have a website design company linking out to some other local businesses, clients' sites, etc... that is probably fine.
I have never heard anyone from Google come out and say "All reciprocal linking is bad". If you're doing it for SEO it's probably worth reconsidering. If you are doing it for your visitors and potential clients/shoppers it is probably ok. Common sense.
In regard to the original question, I think Dimitri gave really good advice. If someone says they'll link to you if you link to them you should probably just walk away because they've said that to everyone else too.

As you mentioned, Google does not allows such reciprocal links.
I think, you should avoid making this kind of deals, i.e. ignore them.

This is something I'm also interested in, in the last post from OP he suggests that exhcaning links is something google like. What about partner compnies etc. We are listed on a number of our friends websites such as photographers and we're going to be putting a link page up which will list of few of these people. We're very selective about who we link to but am I right in now thinking this is actually a damaging practice?

Hey Dimitri Roinishvili,
Theres a possibility that i havent formulated my question correctly.
I'm trying to get links to my website on other websites. How i am finding these websites is by analysing competitors, with opensite explorer, to find out which pages links to their website.
Some of these websites ask for a return link, which is not alloud by google. My question is how do you deal with theseso called backlinks?
-
It depends who asks and how. If it is interesting, I tweet/share the link.
There is a very interesting video: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/what-separates-a-good-outreach-email-from-a-great-one-whiteboard-friday

Backlink Audit
Hello, I have a quick question for the MOZ readers about my companies current backlink audit. We've noticed many of the backlinks that the Google Webmaster Tool has found come from websites that are no longer in existence or have error messages. Are these websites counting negatively against us or should we ignore them? Thanks! Alex Rubin

Is it worth 301 redirecting an old backlink from a 404 to a landing page?
I was reviewing the 404 report in webmaster tools, when I found a 404 back link from a 10 year old forum topic on a very high DA site. It seems the poster did a direct hotlink to a pdf that was on our site a very long time ago, but is now gone so you get a standard "can not be found" page on our site. Is it now worth redirecting the url to an appropriate landing page, considering the age of the post/ link and the sites DA, or is it not worth it because of the age of the link, its a forum, and we are still getting some juice from it anyway despite it being a 404, and won't get much more out of it. Just want to know it good practice if I find many such links (very old links to now 404 pages) Thanks

Backlinks From Press Releases - Should I Disavow Them?
About 2 months ago, I published a press release through PRWEB with a link back to my website of course. Now it must have been one of those morning where the coffee wasn't strong enough as my website already has a Penguin penalty I'm trying to get lifted. The intent wasn't to spam the web but rather to gain some traction in the business hosting world. Like I've said, the coffee must've been too weak that morning as it didn't even cross my mind to see if I could "nofollow" the links in the press release. I just hit the submit button... As I'm in the process of submitting a disavow links request to Google, I'm wondering if I should include the URLs to copies of those press releases? I mean, there's no way I can find all those links as it was submitted not long ago. Google and link tools will keep discovering other copies of the PR for months to come probably.

Cant get no satisfaction: Backlink tools leave me frustrated
Bonjour from 7°C Overcast Wetherby Uk, I'm trying to get the backlink profile for a website that will tell me what inner pages are being linked too not just the home page but I'm not having any luck. Ive used Link Diagnosis but that just gives me a total backlink count, no good, I need to know what inner pages are being linked too. I then tried Yahoo Site Explorer but you can only use it know if you give them your mobile tel number for a windows live account, err no thanks! Ive also used the Site Exploerer API here via the dashboard but again no luck again 😞 So my question is please; "Is there a Tool I can use to see what deeper pages on a site have backlinks" Thanks in advance,

Does getting reblogged on Tumblr offer any positive/powerful backlinks?
This would be under the assumption that our company blog was hosted on tumblr.
