Social Icons Link to Inner Pages
-
We have the social icons (facebook, twitter, youtube etc) in the footer of our homepage linked to inner pages instead of our actual social accounts. So, if you click on the facebook icon you go to one of our inner pages talking about our facebook profile and why to like us on facebook. Then on this inner page you can get to our facebook profile.
We do this so we can pass on PR juice from our homepage to our inner page, and not lose it right off our front page. Is this a good idea? Or does it just confuse users? Most people think when they click on a facebook icon they will go to an actual facebook profile.
Here is my homepage, http://www.buyautoparts.com/ click on the icons on the footer and let me know your thoughts.

Quick reality check here, Brad. Your home page has over 180 links. So each of these social media links you're wondering about is passing 1/180 of the PR juice of the home page. I certainly wouldn't be fussing about this either way. Far bigger challenges to be focusing on.
That said, I certainly wouldn't be risking compromising user experience and user expectations in order to conserve 1/180 of a page's value. I'm not saying you're doing that - I think in some circumstances a dedicated social media page can be great. But as always - make the best decision for your users, not the search engines, especially in this case.
And to reinforce what Adam said - no-following links in NO WAY conserves page rank - that hasn't been the case for well over a year. No-follow has very specific purposes - to denote a link that you don't trust (e.g. from user-generated content like comments) or when the link is a result of a commercial relationship with the target site. The third use , which might apply to a few of your home page links, is to tell the crawlers not to follow links to pages that are of no value to users other than being purely transactional - like your View Cart, Checkout, Create Account, Track Package etc.
The reason to no-follow these isn't to "save Pagerank" but to help conserve crawl budget so the crawlers can spend their time indexing more important pages.
Hope that helps?
Paul
P.S. If I were looking to conserve and transfer front page influence more effectively, I'd be seriously looking at reducing the sheer number of links on the page so the links that remain can transfer more value to the most important pages/sections of the site. Not going to be easy while maintaining usability, but that's where i"d be focusing my attention.

Abandoning your website is always something to worry about, always handle outbound links to open on "_blank" windows (new) and include a rel="nofollow" attribute to your links, or simply opt for a good social widget on your own "Social Landing Page" like you are doing it right now, just make sure your social tools are GOOD enough to replace the purpose of the Social media page itself, so you don't disappoint your visitors, since they are expecting to see your FB or Twitter page instead, I dont personally see a problem by adding a click to the process, specially when they will see a nice widget with a lot of faces and posts.
Good luck!

There was a post not so long ago that said that if you put nofollow's on your internal links you dont save any page rank it just doesnt get passed along so it evaporates to nothing.
Since then I've taken all nofollows off my internal pages...

Hi Brad,
If you are worried about losing the PR off the front page you could just add a "nofollow" attribute to the buttons. Also if you aren't trying to rank the sub-pages then you are kind of wasting the PR anyway, just in a way with one additional step.
Just a thought, hope it is of some help.

Trying to link a Legacy Youtube account to a Google+ Page, the option isn't available...
Hello,
Social Media | | allstatetransmission
I am working on one of my clients projects and would love some advice before making some changes to their Google+ and Youtube account. We created the youtube account before Google+ and Youtube combined so we have a seperate name for the Youtube and Google+ Profile. They were created using separate emails, but both emails are managers of each others "account." We can't combine the two as it won't give me the option, only the option to create a new Youtube channel based on the Google+ Profile. But I already have videos loaded up on the Older Channel that I would like to keep and use for my current Google+ Profile. I have tried to disconnect the Youtube channel to hopefully get the option to link the two, but it just says it is a unavailable option. So my question is:
What advice do you guys have with any of this type of Youtube and Google+ mismatch profile/channels? I am not finding much online besides links to unattaching accounts but that is giving me a message saying that it isn't possible. Or would creating a new channel linked to the Google+ page and just reuploading the videos/transcripts be my best bet? Thank you for your feedback, and if you want anymore details (I know this description when not looking at the accounts might not be enough info, feel free to ask.) I really appreciate it. J0 -
Getting Connections to Follow LinkedIn Company Page
I've just started a freelance contract with a client promoting their content over social media, primarily Twitter and LinkedIn. As I've started to manager their accounts, I noticed they have set up both a personal LinkedIn page under the company name as well as a Company Page. The "personal" account has 330 connections but the Company Page only has 17 followers. Has anyone had success with a good strategy for quickly and effectively promoting the Company Page to the personal connections? I'd like to actually migrate the connections over to the Company Page, which should be the primary focus. Thanks for any help.

Makeoverfor our Facebook page titles! question about open graph and Google
Hello, We have two Facebook pages for our company, one in English and one in Arabic. A few weeks ago we wanted to change the Facebook page titles but this option was not allowed for both pages. Now Facebook is giving us an option to change the title for both pages: We had a lengthy discussion regarding the best way to name our Facebook pages. Currently our Facebook pages titles are: For the one in English: "X" ( X - our brand name in English*) For the page in Arabic: "X - Arabic" ( X- our brand name in English*) We agreed to change the title for the page in English to: X - (The main 3 keywords in our brand's field in English) ( X - our brand name in English).* for the Arabic page we suggested to change the title to: X - (The main 3 keywords in our company field in Arabic)** ( X - our brand name in English).* **** We will translate the main 3 keywords to Arabic** We have a few questions: - How does the search work in Facebook? Does the open graph algorithm take into account the page's content and/or its title and description? - Is there any preferred way to name the Facebook pages? We were debating using the company's slogans versus the main keywords for our brand. ? Or should the title contain just the brand name? - What components of the Facebook page title and URL affect our page's visibility in Google for a search on our brand name? It's important to mention that Google currently does not show the Arabic page in the 1st page in Google. Thank you in advance for your help!

How is your social media profile?
Hi At the moment im trying to make a social media strategy for the company i work in, whcis is a big insurance company. Of course i want to add value on the different social media, but i also want to take into account which value the social media can add to my SEO. Facebook

We have a profile on Facebook, with around 5.000 likes, and as far as im concerned the important thing on Facebook is to get people to share your links? Google+ At the moment we dont have a Google+ account, but my suggestion would be that we create one . maybe not to generate alot of content, but in order to get more info on the branded search results - and i have a presumption that Google will put more and more emphasis on Google+ in the updates that lies ahead. Twitter We have a profile, but are there anything we could do in order to optimize the SEO-effect via Twitter - what i have heard is that because their links are no-follow it dosent have any effect on SEO. Instagram
Is there anything to gain on SEO if you create a profile on Instagram? Please let me hear your views on this. Thanks in advance.0 -

How does SEOMoz Code its Social Badge on Blog
On the blog section (and most other pages of the site) there is a social badge on the right hand side of the page where it shows the number of followers on Twitter, FB fans, etc. How does SEOMoz pull those numbers? It seems like its not using the normal Javascritps supplied by FB and Twitter, Feedburner. Thanks

Anyone have a great example of a confirmation page with a social element?
We're thinking of adding social elements to our confirmation page, which as of right now doesn't ask for any specific action. Might as well take advantage. i.e. "Tweet this" or "Share this" with a shortened link to the landing page. Does anyone have any great examples of Twitter/Facebook being incorporated into a confirmation page? Visually pleasing, striking, great copy? It can be a confirmation for any type of action, whether you've just bought something, subscribed to something, joined a site, anything really.
