To Disavow, or not?
-
Hi - I'm working on a site that has somewhere between 1200 and 1500 backlinks. Somewhere around 800 or 1000 of the links have one of four or five exact keyword phrases that this company paid a former seo to create links for.
They ranked well for those phrases until last fall and then almost overnight they fell completely out of the first 50 SERP results. They did NOT receive a manual penalty. This leads me to two questions:
1. This sounds like they were hit by Penguin, rather than Panda. Do I have that right?
2. Is there any value in disavowing the 800 or so spammy links? Is there any danger in doing so?
Thanks!

In that case have the contact and disavow plan on tap and ready to execute if needed.
Google doesn't want you to just disavow links that they think are bad; they want you to go through the process of attempting to get them removed. Even if you know there is a 0% chance, you'll have to do it and document your process.
There are a couple of good YouMoz posts detailing this.

Thank you for taking time to respond to my question, Craig. I appreciate your help.
Re: "Contacting the sites to get the anchor text changed": that's not going to work in this case. They're just spammy link webs / farms and they don't respond to such requests.
We are indeed publishing new content and working to get some new links via that approach.
Thanks!

Based on what you are describing they may have tripped an algorithmic penalty based on anchor text density.
Since the site has not (yet) received an unnatural links warning, you don't have to start removing those links - but I'd recommend you have a plan just in case.
Rather than disavowing these links, have you thought about these tactics:
1. Contacting the sites to get the anchor text changed.
2. Coming up with a new content campaign to generate more (and more diverse) links to reduce the anchor text density and add more quality links to the site

If I disavow bad links on "disavow link webmaster" will they still show up on my moz reports?
We recently found out we have a lot of bad links linking back to our website from spam sites, I disavowed them through the google disavow link webmaster. On my moz report it still shows the links, is that normal?

Quick way to review Disavow?
We've recently taken on a new client that has a very large Disavow file. I'm wondering if any good backlinks are being disavowed in the list and want to do an audit but wondered if there was a tool I could use that could give me some high level stats on each of the domains in the Disavow? Ideally, I'd love to be able to drop a list of domains into a tool that can tell me PR, DA, Spam Score, Citation Flow, Trust Flow in an exportable table. Does such a tool exist?

Submit new list of links to be disavowed
I had a question and I am hoping that some one on this community will be able to help clarify. We went through a link removal and disavow process last year. If we see more unnatural links showing up in our link profile and we want to disavow those links, what should be included in the new list of links that need to be disavowed: Only new links or domains Old list that was disavowed + new list that needs to be disavowed Thank you in advance for your help.

Google Disavow File Update
Is there any specific format to update the Disavow file? Also if I submitted the file a months ago, and need to update it now... should I leave the old 'excluded domains' or should I remove them? Lets say this is what I have: How would you update it? #explanation from to Google went here... and ended here.

To disavow or not?!
Hi, I've been rooting around my GWT account and noticed two what may be dodgy links, they look like a blog network - no contact details on the site and basically just blog posts about various subjects that all contain keyword rich links. The two that are pointing at me are two seperate articles on two sites that both contain around 3 keyword links to our website. I have no idea why these are linking to me as I have not requested them, so not too sure if someone has done this on purpose on what! Looked on the sites in question and there is no way of contacting the person responsible for the sites. Not had any warnings yet (touch wood) in GWT, how you you go about trying to get shut of links when there is no contact info on the sites? Bit wary of using the Disavow thing in Google as some people say go for it while others say avoid? Any hints/tips would be welcomed as this has got me a bit worried! Cheers Ted

Disavow links returning?
Morning Mozzers, Happy Presidents Day. We submitted a disavow file about 4 weeks ago and in GWT saw that our links went from ~20k to about ~1300. Now this was good as majority were dubious at best. What is strange is I logged into GWT today and see many of the links that appeared to be 'disavowed' are back in our profile. I do not have any messages from Goog. Has anyone else seen this? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for you help.

Is there a way to easily add "domain:" in front of an entire list of domains you want to disavow?
I'm submitting some disavow reports for clients. As most of you likely know you can either disavow a URL or a domain. So, to disavow a url, you would enter into the text file: http://www.example.com/this_page.html and to disavow the entire domain you would enter: domain:example.com I find that in most cases you would want to disavow the domain. For example, if there is a backlink on www.exampledirectory.com/health/page24/, by the time Google goes to disavow that link it may be on page 25. However, it is super time consuming to take my list of urls from a spreadsheet and type, "domain:" in front and also remove the http://www. Is there a way this can be done programatically?
