Duplicate Content

Is making tabs with general product information on similar products considered duplicate content?
-
That content is duplicate content, yes. However, it's more important to have a decent amount of unique content on each page than it is to worry about how much duplicate content is on each page. Duplicate content isn't the end of the world if each page has substantial unique content, which is the first explanation I'd put forth in why you're still seeing those other domains ranking fine. This is how you'd strike a balance between having useful duplicate content and pleasing search engines.
Regarding having too many products to write unique descriptions, unfortunately you're going to have to bite the bullet on that one if you want to rank better. It might seem unfeasible for you to write all of those, but writing them one by one or hiring a writer to rewrite each one in batches is going to be essential to you ranking well.

I have issues with duplicate content due to the way our system works and the CMS feeds. It bothers me, but I've also realized we can OK in spite of it. So, to your point of seeing sites rank anyway, it helps to have a quality domain and be credible
I partly suspect duplicate content is a hold over from the old days of spammy sites who intentionally created a lot of duplicate content in an attempt to appear to have depth of content. I think Google has figured out that businesses that sell similar products, but maybe are only different via color or size, will have duplication. And that it's not misleading to try to fool the search engines.

I feel you, I know that sometimes is very difficult to play around with content only to please Google, especially when you know that you did the right thing for your users.
But I wouldn't worry that much... I mean if you have only some general info as dupe content, and you have also some product related unique info, it should be ok (I'm sure that you can describe each product a bit ... color, size, fabric, a testimonial, distinct images and alt texts etc.)
I think Google can handle these situations.

Thanks guys,
I actually already knew the answer to the question, but I see a lot of websites ranking high while still using tabs with general information (exactly the same) on similar products.
My website has mainly custom made products so the general information is the same and there are too many products to write it as unique content. I now use a button that leads to a separate page with all the information but somehow I just don't like it. It just looks so much more informative to have all this information on the product page itself without having to go to another page.
If Google really cares about giving as much information as possible, why isn't there a way to have this type of duplicate content?

Hello Sylvana,
duplicate content refers to content that is similar and appears on two or more pages of the same website (or different).
So, if those tabs are displayed on a single page, than you should not worry about but if the same tabs are displayed on multiple pages you might want to think writing unique product infos for each of your pages.
Cheers.

Yes, after all, the content is 'duplicate' across these pages. It depends on the amount of duplicate content across pages whether Google will consider it a problem though.

Duplicate Content for Event Pages
Hi Folks, I have event pages for specific training courses running on certain dates, the problem I have is that MOZ indicates that I have 1040 duplicate content issues because I'm serving pages like this https://purplegriffon.com/event/2521/mop-practitioner I'm not sure how best to go about resolving this as, of course, although each event is unique in terms of it's start date, the courses and locations could be identical. Will Google penalise us for these types of pages, or will they even index them? Should I add a canonical link to the head of the document pointing to the related course page such as https://purplegriffon.com/courses/project-management/mop-management-of-portfolios/mop-practitioner. Will this solve the issue? I'm a little stuck on what to do for the best. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. Kind Regards Gareth Daine

Index Page Content
Mozers, I am of the believe and as a person who puts the utmost emphasis on the index page of any website I am trying to rank, especially with a new domain ... insuring content is relevant, structured, optimized and we have some link juice flowing in. I find once we get the index page ranked, Google's little bots then start to index and rank accordingly the rest of the website ... and we start producing results. We also develop websites (dare I say its where we expertise in) and unexpectantly the client has asked us to carry out SEO work additionally to their web development. Problem lies here, their index page, has absolutely no written content at all, just one large image with a logo (Fashion Website) ...Which I identify as a huge issue as per my explanation is paragraphs one or two. I am sure withe the many more qualified SEO experts and gurus within the SEOmoz community, you have also come across this issue So a few questions, if you don't mind adding advice. 1 - Am I putting too much emphasize on content within the index page, in terms of indexing and actually ranking ...yes I appreciate that terms within the website will be ranked against other pages other than the index page, but will it harm us for having no content at all within the index page 2 - If so, and yes is the answer to above, how do we handle it, we have spoke with the client and he is pretty adamant that he want the index page as is, he has been through out the whole website building process. As suggested, any advice would be really appreciated, its a difficult market to rank within a it is, and i can only see this index page making the task a lot more difficult Cheers John

Duplicate pages
Hi, I am using a CMS that generates dynamic urls that according to the SeoMoz tool will be indexed as duplicate pages. The pages in questions are forms, blog-posts etc. that are not crucial to achieve ranking for. I do worry though about the consequences of having 20 (non-duplicate)pages with static urls and about 100 pages that are duplicates with dynamic urls. What consequences will this have for the speed that the robots crawl the site and could there be negative effects on ranking for the entire domain?

Why does SEOmoz use /blog/content-title vs /category/content-title? Any difference?
Assume a brand new blog being designed and all other things equal. What are the pros & cons between using the url structure /blog/content-title vs. /category/content-title? Note:
