Best approach to ranking locally
-
Hello,
What are the best approaches to ranking locally. Ie a user in Dallas googles "mechanics" and local results return.
I understand Google+ local pages to be an important factor for the location based listings on maps.
What about about location specific pages on the site? Meaning if we have a page on the site talking about areas we serve in Dallas.
Other suggestions?

Hi Call Ring Talk,
You have already received such awesome and helpful replies from the community, I will only add a bit here, some of which will be a summary of what others have written.
Local rankings depend on a ton of different factors. Where you have a physical location, your best bet is typically to pursue local rankings. If you are a Service Area Business (SAB) you must pursue organic rankings for your service cities. Per your original question, the development of city landing pages on your website is one of the best tactics for achieving organic rankings for cities where you serve but where you have no physical location. For more information on the topic of city landing pages, I have been told that this piece has been really helpful to a ton of people:
The Nitty Gritty of City Landing Pages
If the whole concept of Local SEO is new to you, I recommend that you read through all of the articles on GetListed.org, which is a MOZ website. Here is the link to the Learning Center:

I further recommend that you follow Local Search Godfather, Mike Blumenthal, on a regular basis:
And that you review the 2012 Local Search Ranking Factors report, though many things have changed in the past year. For many years running, this has been the premiere Local SEO industry survey:

Very Detailed and top the point answer by Tim!
Once you are done with the basics like Submission to Local Maps on Google, Yahoo, Bing and Business Listings on Yellow Pages and Data Aggregates...now it’s the time to do few Advance stuff!
1. Review Collection
You can start this by contacting your previous customers and request them to write a review about their experience while working with you! Initially it will be a pain but you only have to collect first few comments then reviews will bring more reviews...
2. Local Bloggers
It is a good idea to contact local bloggers and ask them to write a review about your product or service... if the bloggers are within your niche you can also request a column as a guest write on their blog.
Hope this helps!

Great response from Tim.
To add a few further pointers:
1. There are some great lists of citations around so take a look and get a list together
2. Total volume of citations matters and more is generally better (there are diminishing returns obviously) and you wan to make sure you have all of the important ones your competitors have. You can easily dig in and see you local competitors citations with some Google-Fu:
“Competitor biz name” AND “Competitor zip” -site:http://www.competitorssite.co.uk
This will show you a good batch of citations for your competitors (look at the top 3) and you can create a hit list.
3. Quality of citations - beyond getting the NAP 100% consistent and dialled in make sure you look at each one of the citations as a potential advertisement for your business. Build in your keywords and the service areas into the description as well to work on that co-occurance of keywords and improve the ability for your site to rank for these sub areas.
4. Reviews - 5 reviews will generally give you a bit of a boost (around 2 places). 10 reviews will give you a quality score in your listings again which can influence clicks and more importantly persuade customers to get in touch. Create a policy to drive positive reviews. Don't cheat, but ask clients you know who are happy if they would not mind reviewing. If you can figure out a way to get them to work in your keywords and location into the review as well then that will only help (again, don't cheat, don't build dodgy reviews, they will know and it will hurt the other good work - do this properly).
5. Make sure your on page optimisation is dialled in 100% - no excuses on that one
**6. **As with the citations make sure your Google+ listing is as good as it can be. Images, video, a great description. Don't just copy and paste the same description, write it out each time so it is a little different. Take your time. Do it properly.
7. Local links are also important so if there are local business organisations or sites then look to get links (and possibly citations) from those sources as well.
Local is deep and complex when competitive but in most cases, in the UK at least where we operate, it is easy to get up there with some simple strategies as listed above and small businesses can get found by local customers without having to do some of the bigger player strategies that are sometimes out of reach.
Hope that helps!

Yes, you are correct, Google+ Local pages are important, but this is only one small piece of what you need to do to rank locally. To answer your question regarding location-specific pages on your site, the answer is "it depends." For terms Google considers local in nature, like mechanics, you are not going to trick the search engine into moving you up the ranks just because you have a page on your site optimized for that area.
For example, if you had a Plano mechanics page, Grapevine, etc., but you don't have a physical location in those areas. Your best bet is to rank for where your address is. If your address is Dallas proper, then work on ranking in Dallas. If there is a landmark area, such as the Galleria, and it is near your address, then having that on a page ("near the Galleria") can certainly help. For areas that are not nearby, consider using Adwords and not waste time doing local SEO for them. Once you understand this, proceed with these general steps.
Step 1: Confirm the best data that should be used for the business (name, address and phone). Typically there are multiple variations of each that have been propagated around the web depending on the source. For business name, use the single best version that customers call the business. For address, you will need to see what currently exists, however as a rule of thumb, use the USPS version: ex. Street - St (no period after), Avenue = Ave, East = E (no period). Finally, use the single best local phone number - not an 800 number and not a tracking number (per Google).
Step 2: Use this same NAP (name address phone) on your website and on all sites around the web including Google+ Local. When you find listings with a different version, clean them up and make them match.
Step 3: On-site, put your NAP on every page in Schema format. Embed a Google map on your site using the same address. If you have multiple locations, give each its own Contact page with your NAP, hours, maps emebd, etc.
Step 4: Complete your Google+ Local profile using your NAP and complete all fields.
Step 5: Use the same data and add, claim/ verify your business listing on other sites around the web. Use GetListed.org as an initial guide.
That should give you a start.

Big ranking drop after 12/Jan/2017
Hello, moz users. Has anyone confirmed that keyword ranking dropped since last few days? I've tracked several keyword ranking by Moz and SEMrush and the ranking dropped big time on both tools today. one of the keywords dropped its ranking from 10 to out of SERP. Mozcast has shown high temperature so I assume there is or has been algo update but I would like to know someone encountered the same issue. Thanks.

Our Journey back to Good Rankings.
17 year old support site on the topic of hair loss. The home page (and pretty much all internal pages) enjoyed Page 1 Place 1 ranking out of 64 million search results for 12 of those years, for our main search phrase: hair loss. Other internal pages ranked #1 for other search phrases. I believe we were blessed by Google because we did everything the best we could: Genuine, manually constructed, unique, relevant content that was created from the heart. Other generalized health sites linked-to our site for more information on hair loss, and we had a couple thousand back-links that we never had to pay for. For the last 7 years or so, core content and news center went stagnant, but user-driven content (discussion forums) continued chugging along. Very old CMS systems had created duplicate content (print pages, PDF pages, share pages) and the site was not mobile-friendly at all. By the end of 2013, our home page had been bumped to the middle of Page 2 for "hair loss" as Google began pushing us down. Replacing our 700 page site dedicated to the topic of hair loss with random news articles, and dermatology organization sites that had little more than a paragraph of content on the topic. Traffic and income dropped by over 75% with this change, and by 2015 we were looking at a 9 year old site design that wasn't mobile-friendly, and had no updated content outside of the Forums for about as long. Mid 2015 we began a frantic renovation. The store was converted to a mobile-friendly design, tossed into HTTPS, and our developer screwed up, forgetting to put canonicals in place. Soon after, our store rankings dropped to almost zero. By the end of 2015 this was fixed, and we were spending tens of thousands to convert a very large, very old site into WordPress with a responsive, mobile friendly, lightning fast page-load design. We had no Google Analytics data prior to this either. Actions Taken starting Jan 1, 2016 - May 2016: Static Homepage + core content > Now put into WordPress. (80 pages) - proper 301's. News section running a 10 year old "PostNuke" CMS > Now put into WordPress. (300 pages). 301's. Forums running a 5 year old vBulletin > Now put into XenForo. (160,000 pages). 301's. Profiles section running a 10 year old "SocialEngine" CMS > Now put into new SocialEngine. (10,000 pages)* Site moved from HTTP > HTTPS. Proper 301's. Store CMS already finished months prior but sales dropped by 90%. Almost zero. Old forum CMS had created countless duplicate URLs. All of these 410'd. Old forum CMS had 65,000 pointless member profile pages indexed. All 410'd. Old news CMS created 4+ dup pages for every article (print, etc). All 301'd to new Article URL. Our HTACCESS file is thousands of lines long, trying to clean everything up, and redirect everything back to one, accurate, proper URL for each piece of content. It was a lot of work! After 17 years, we obviously had spammy sites linking to us. I quickly deleted content on my site the worst offenders were linking to. Then hired an SEO person to create a disavow audit on the other 20,000 sites liking to us. He settled on around 300 URLs needing disavow, but commented that didn't see any evidence we'd been penalized by Panda. He finished Friday and we will submit disavow Monday. Ran Screaming Frog audit on the site Cleaned up Google Search Console fully Created properties and submitted new sitemaps there. Monitored each property for the last 3 months and addressed 100% of issues raised. Revived Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, and Instagram Accounts. Began publishing new content in our /news/ section and cross-posting to Social Media. Began improving up our Title Tags in the Forums as they often were pointless: "Hi! Need help!?" **Despite this, nothing has helped. Nothing has budged. Our traffic hasn't moved an inch since January. Sales have dropped 90% and site income has almost dried up. ** I have taken out a $25,000 personal loan just to cover my mortgage and pay my bills while I attempt to identify what's going wrong, and how to fix it. It bought me about 3 months, and that 3 months is almost up. I hired 2 or 3 different SEO experts with varying levels of experience. Due to no Google Analytics data to draw on, none of them could come up with any specific explanations for our drop in ranking over the last 4 years. That's why I took the approach to just "do everything" to fix all problems identified, and then cross my fingers. It hasn't worked. As of today our home page is not even found in google for our main search phrase: hair loss. Its simply not there. At all. And the only thing that is ranking is our forums, ranked at "67", which is horrible. But I don't understand why a site that was doing so well for over a decade has now been completely dropped from Google, without a single notice in Console or otherwise, explaining any problems. I realize this is a massive undertaking, and an equally massive post. But any time you can spend helping me will be forever appreciated.

Decent rankings in Google, nothing in Bing and Yahoo
Hi there, I'm in the process of SEOing a site in a very competitive sector, the short term loans market. The URL for the site is http://www.piggy-bank.co.uk. I've managed to get a fair bit of success in Google for some very competitive keywords like short term loans, short term lender etc but in Bing and Yahoo I'm having no luck at all, with only 2 visits in the past month and no decent rankings!! I think I'm doing everything right, with regular new content on the site, decent technical SEO, semantic site structure, regular site map upload, a 10 year old domain, holistic link building through guest blogging etc, but still no luck at all. Looking at the webmaster tools in Bing, 95% of the URLs are indexed, but I'm getting such a low impression count, and obviously, an even lower click through. Am I missing something really obvious? Does anyone have any suggestions to improve my Bing and Yahoo rankings? I've worked on 100s of other sites and Yahoo and Bing tend to be the easy win to make the client happy 😉 Thanks in advance for your help. Dan

Google Places Rank Replacement
Hi Guys We have recentley done work for a client where they ended up position 1 for their chosen keyword, which was great. Since then there rank has changed and they are now first in google places rank but not on organic search at all, where as before they were on both? Any suggestions on why this may have happened? Not to sure at why google would have replaced the organic rank with the places rank? Cheers Chris

Has Panda update made you lose your ranks but put them back again?
I noticed recently that one of the main sites I run dropped ranks quite heavily across the board. I then noticed that with very link building during the time that the ranks were down (about 1 month) that my ranks went back up again really quickly. All this with very little link building effort, and its the same link building campaign I've been running for a while. So I'm wondering has any been experiencing ranking flux between jan and feb? I know that people reckon if you fix some things your ranks can improve again, but I barley fixed anything on the site and yet it dropped some keywords from 1st page to 3rd page and then back to 3rd page; some keywords went back to original position some were lower but non were higher.

Ranking #1 for decent traffic keywords, but not receiving any traffic?
A site I work on is ranked number 1 for a few keywords. To see how much a keyword is searched per month I rely on Google Adwords Keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). Using this tool I see that the keyword receives 880 local monthly searches and another keyword they rank #1 for receives 1300 local monthly searches. To me these keywords are not the biggest as far as traffic but they are not small by any means. Now here is the issue. Like mentioned above, the site nmber 1 for multiple keywords. They have been ranked number 1 for these keywords for months. Looking in analytics the other day I notice that on a month to month basis both of these keywords are getting 1, or 2 visits. This past month (October) one of the keywords did not receive ANY visits, and that is being ranked #1 for a 1300 monthly searched keyword. It just doesn’t make sense. I would imagine getting at least 100 or so visits a month from these search terms. Could someone please help me understand this a little bit better?

Does the browers type affect rankings?
This may be a rooky question so apologies in advance if it is! A client of mine has asked why his site's rank is different when he searches for it from his iPhone or computer (where he uses IE) and also on Bing. Obviously I know that there will be differences between Bing and Google so I can explain that to him. But he seems to be implying that the different browsers are affecting the results on his iPhone and computer. I've tried this myself using Firefox and IE and on Firefox the site ranks page 1 but on IE it ranks page 3 (both using Google). Is this likely to do with the browser having information about my past search habits or is it actually the browser affecting the SERP? Again, sorry if this is a stupid question! Thanks in advance.
