Penguin Update, what I've noticed
-
Hi Guys, I have spent 2 days looking at our site and competitors after the update, 3 things jump out straight away for us. I am in the travel industry and still on the first page of the major KW's but in the 8 to 10 region, was 2 to 5.
1. The sites that have moved up both have shops selling merchandise which is not the main focus of their site, anyone else spotted sites with a eCommerce section have benefited from latest update?
2. Sites we have links from, although they look like a travel sites, maybe be themed differently by Google. Anybody know a good tool that will help determine what theme a site is? Images, design and content don't always seem to be a good indicator, I think back links to the domain has a big effect on the site you get the link from. Any tool that will help speed up this process would be great. We need more quality links from travel sites (or at least what google thinks is a travel related site).
3. The competitors who have done well seem to have 45% links to home page, we only had 28% so we are focusing now on links to home page.
We don't really stand out from the top 10 sites in any other way in terms of other indicators like branded keywords vrs money making kw's.
Any thoughts or feedback would be great.

I think alot off people are not taking into account about the penguin 2.0 update its site that are backlinking to you might be devalued.
So you look at your own backlink profile and you think its ok, but the backlink profile of the site that backlink to you might have hand there authority reduced (maybe even penalised). And then what about the backlinks to the backlink of the backlinks ( backlInkception)
My under standing is that penguin 2.0 is only about backlink profiles (like 1.0), and everything else is speculation at this stage without a lot of research.
I'm not saying what your have noted is not correct, just that there are far to many variables at this stage to come to any conclusions and some bigger research needs to be done on it.
"so we are focusing now on links to home page" I think that might be a good idea, more links to the homepage would look more natural IMO

When the site's entire URL structure changed, should we update the inbound links built pointing to the old URLs?
We're changing our website's URL structures, this means all our site URLs will be changed. After this is done, do we need to update the old inbound external links to point to the new URLs? Yes the old URLs will be 301 redirected to the new URLs too. Many thanks!

How do you know if you've received an algorithmic penalty?
I have been going through potentially harmful backlinks using Moz's Open Site Explorer spam rankings and contacting site owners to request removal. Some of these links do not have contact information. For these, I have considered using the Google Disavow tool, but I see warnings all over the internet to only use it if absolutely necessary. My idea is to only use it if I actually receive a penalty. My problem is I am not sure if we ever have received a penalty or what it would even look like. In short, how do you know if you've received a Google Algorithmic penalty?

How to remove my site's pages in search results?
I have tested hundreds of pages to see if Google will properly crawl, index and cached them. Now, I want these pages to be removed in Google search except for homepage. What should be the rule in robots.txt? I use this rule, but I am not sure if Google will remove the hundreds of pages (for my testing). User-agent: *

2013 Panda Update Question
Hi everyone, I'm new here 🙂 So far I've had wonderful success seo wise and none of the updates (Penguin nor Panda) affected any sites, until this one. For example, one site has 7 keywords I'm optimizing for. Out of those 7, all but 2 (and variations of the 2 - one word vs long-tail) completely tanked. These keywords were all on page 2/3. One of the two survivors never budged from page 2 (it's a brand keyword so I was sooo happy to finally get it to page 2) Now when I check rankings, the other terms show up in the 200-400 spots, but NOT for the URL I was optimizing for (category page) but instead for random products in the category. The only thing I've done differently with the 2 keywords that are still doing well, was focus - we did more link-building for those, but not an extreme amount. Never over-optimize. My question is, how did 2 survive and 5 are still floating up and down. Last night I saw one go up 122 spots, now today down 14. I'm really struggling with this. Thank you

Optimized page titles post penguin
Just a quick question to hear a few opinions on page titles in a post penguin/panda world. For example, we are working on a large downloads portal that offers Addons for games called FSX and FS2004... Page titles are currently as follows: Concorde for FSX - Civil Aircraft Downloads

British Airways Boeing 747 for FSX - Civil Aircraft Downloads
Quants Airbus A380 for FSX - Civil Aircraft Downloads I thought it would be beneficial to remove the boilerplate "Civil Aircraft Downloads" to stop the template effect in the titles. Yay or nay? Good idea or bad idea? Other ideas? Also, after removing that the titles would be as follows: British Airways Boeing 747 for FSX We still will have "for FSX" boiler plate text...is this okay? Perhaps we should remove the "for" and just have the title as "FSX Concorde" or "Concorde FSX" -what do you guys think? Are there any other title suggestions you guys can recommend? Your thoughts, tips and suggestions are very much appreciated.0
