Removing text from Homepage - Bad idea?
-
Hi Mozzers,
I've just read this great article: http://moz.com/ugc/how-to-build-a-great-online-fashion-brand-34-things-that-really-amazing-fashion-retailers-do
I'm working with my wife on a small (hopefully, growing) fashion website www.vintageeheirloom.com
One of the points was not to directly sell on the homepage, rather draw customers into different areas of the site. Seems good advice and it's followed by many big brands online.
As a small company, doing fairly well for some targeted keywords, do you think it would be a good or bad idea for me to remove most, or all of the text on my homepage. The main emphasis of our site is vintage Chanel and using the tool nTopic I score 99% relevancy for 'Vintage Chanel'. Removing would certainly affect this. Obviously I could amend my Vintage Chanel shopping category to include all this.
I'd be grateful if you have any thoughts / similar experience.
Thanks !
Kevin

Thanks Irving,
So this seems like an aesthetic choice for brands that don't need to rely on on page SEO for their homepage (most have no text !) and drive customers in other ways.
I'm concerned my homepage looks cluttered. Would you know if Google still pick up text if I manage to implement an accordion for the chunk of text I have? Any possible penalties?
Thanks again...

Bad idea, without content the homepage won't rank. This is one of the #1 cardinal SEO rules. Homepage must have content.

Unsolved What should I do with WordPress Blog homepage
Hi, I have a large WordPress blog with thousands of posts. By default, the blog homepage contains the excerpt of each posts. As there are so many posts, the homepage is paginated(Totally 1341 pages) I use siteliner to check and find a lot of duplicate contents on the blog homepage. So, what should I do with it? Should I noindex the homepage and all the paginated pages accordingly? Thank you

What to do with removed pages and 404 error
I recently removed about 600 'thin' pages from my site which are now showing as 404 errors in WMT as expected. As I understand it I should just let these pages 404 and eventually they'll be dropped from the index. There are no inbound links pointing at them so I don't need to 301 them. They keep appearing in WMT as 404's though so should I just 'mark as fixed' until they stop appearing? Is there any other action I need to take?

On-page tool idea. What do you think? Like to hear it!
Easy on-page checker idea feedback Some script I wrote. Is this handy for someone? Try the script yourself like most things I like the Moz on-page grader (a lot!) but it does not do everything I want it to. So sometime I write my own little checks and other times I want to see list for of example all images without ALT tags. For this I wrote some code for myself the last few weeks. Now I bundled them for a handy little checker that is as is and not meant to make money with. It's just my handy work so to say and I would like to hear some feedback on the very simple but I think effective method of checking anchors on a front page against the page they link to. This is a very basis page checker for some important on-page ranking factors. If you type links in the option field then all links found on the page are listed Per link anchor quality check: The idea is very simple: if we assume for the simplicity of this method that the anchor text found first linking to an other page on the website this anchor text determnines the keyword with which the page is indexed. In made the links found on the page clickable. When clicked it starts the same scan but then only for the anchor text provided with the link clicked. If the on-page checks are ok I reccon your doing alright. idea is to start with the front page of any website and click the followed links, The page linked to is graded for match with anchor text as keyword. Try the script yourself Gr Daniel

Bad to have "As Seen on" links sitewide
I've seen a lot of people saying that sidewide external links are a no-go. Does this also apply to links of a vanity variety? What I mean by this is "as seen on" links or links to awards given to the business? This intellectually seems okay to me, but I want to make sure I'm not shooting myself in the foot. Any evidence, case studies, anecdotal stories would be appreciated!

Adding Tags in the blog is good or bad?
Hi Friends, In my blog I used to write unique content in between 300 to 450 words and add the related tags up to 15. When I research about adding tags in the blog I come across this video from “Matt Cutts” says Is it worth spending time on creating tags and categories? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A96yDPqa2rs Key Points from Matt Cutts Video are given below: No Need Tags - In general, Google figure out what your post is about, so don't worry too much about it. So my question is do I need to remove all tags from my blog or can I reduce the tag count to 5 alone? Currently I am using 15 tags to each post, is there any dis-advantage by adding tags like this? Let me know your suggestions? Thanks

Does class and id names considered as text content by google
Does google and other search engines considers the class and id names as part of text content. Will it be included in the keyword density and treated as a content. For Example: <a <span="">href</a><a <span="">="http://xyz.com" title="xyz" class="topmargin_rightside_middlenavigation_home"></a> Will google considers the words "topmargin rightside middlenavigation home" as part of the text. Also If i am supposed to use this class as many times on a page, will the keyword density affects.

Does the homepage of GetSatisfaction have very good on-page SEO? please give some critique
Hi Mozzerz, If you have done successful on-page SEO optimization in the past, this may be easy for you to analyze quickly. (especially if you have some tools to help you compare things like keywords vs code weight etc) Does the homepage of www.GetSatisfaction.com constitute a well done on-page SEO? Could you please critique the homepage's SEO value and say why it is very good or why it is OK, or why it is bad.
