Blog Not Ranking Well at All in Search Engines, Need Help!
-
Hi Mozers,
Need some help on a CMS I've been working with over the last year. The CMS is built by a team of guys here in Washington State. Basically, I'm having issues with clients content on the blog system not getting ranking correctly at all.
Here's a few problems I've noticed: Could you confirm and scale these problems based upon being, "not a problem" "a problem" and "critical must fix"
1. The title tag is pulling from the title of the article which is also automatically generating a URL with underscores instead of dashes.
- Is having a duplicate URL, Title, and Title tag spammy looking to search engines?
- Are underscores on long URL's confusing google? Where shorter one's are fine (i.e. domain/i_pad/
(i.e.http://www.ductvacnw.com/blog/archives/2013/05/20/5_reasons_to_hire_a_professional_to_clean_your_air_ducts_and_vents),
2. The CMS is resolving all URL's with a canonical instead of a 301 redirect (I've told webmaster tools which preferred url should be indexed).
- Does using a canonical over a 301 redirect cause any confusion with Google? Is one better practice then the other?
3. The H1 tags on the blog pull from "blog category" instead of the title of the blog post.
- Is this is a problem?
4. The URl's are quite long with the added "archives/2013/05/20/5".
- Does this cause problems by pushing the main target keyword further away from the domain name?
5. I'm also noticing the blog post is actually not part of the breadcrumbs where we normally would expect that to populate after the blog category name, Problem?
These are some of the things I've noticed and need clarification on. If you see anything else please let me know?
-
I understand from where you are coming from,
did you try to run the website on screaming frog or Moz Crawler? did u see certain anomalies ?
-
Agreed,
since I'm seeing these issues across all sites that use this CMS with all the above issues I mentioned could it be that these are all causing a critical issue with the indexing/ranking issue. I must say, I've had a much easier time ranking the pages with the CMS which give me more control then I have had with ranking the blog articles of the websites using the CMS.
As this issue seems to be consistent across all sites using the CMS I'm trying to figure out the problems that need to be actually fixed within the CMS (as the programming costs us lots of dough).
-
Great Keith,
I just want you to take what i said and go a lil broader.
ie. Google is not quickly indexing or knowing about your content when you hit publish. which indicate:
- Low authority
- Crawlers is not used to / not trained to come to your website regularly to check for updates.
- Trust Issues
fixing these 3 bullets points will help your problems that you are facing
Sincerely,
-
The ranking issues were happening before any content was syndicated elsewhere. However, you do make a good point. I just wanted to clarify that the issue has been happening before any syndication occurred on all sites using this specific CMS.
-
All Problems you mentioned are opportunities that you can make you blog "better" but there is no "critical must fix" that is preventing google from indexing and rankings your website.
but what i see in the serps that you are syndicating your blog through blogger and wordpress and it seems that google is discovering the content on blogger and wordpress before your site(your site cache is on 21st the wordpress/blogger it shows may 20th).
what i will do is try to disable that syndication and try to submit your rss feed to google under sitemaps (http://www.ductvacnw.com/blog/latest.atom)

Need Help - Lost 75% Of Traffic Since May 2018
Sorry to go in-depth here, but want to give all available information. We went live late April 2018 with our two websites in Shopify (moved from Magento, same admin, different storeviews...which we find later to cause some issues). Both of these websites sell close to the same products (we purchased a competitor about 5 years ago, which is why we have two). The nice thing is that they do almost identical amounts in sales. They have done very well for years, especially in the last two years. Well, the core algo update around May 22nd-24th 2018 happened and wiped out about 65% of our Google traffic for one website (MySupplementStore.com). And this latest update, wiped out another 20%. I couldn't figure out why this would have happened, because we were very cautious about keeping things separate, unique descriptions etc. So I did some digging and this is what I found: The reviews we migrated over from Magento somehow were combined and added to both websites. This is something I didn't notice. I had this resolved a month ago so that each site's reviews are now only on that website. Our blog section was duplicated across both websites during the migration. Again, something I didn't notice, as we have close to over 1,000 blog posts per site. This was resolved two weeks ago. As I was looking more, I found that the last 6 months, a person working for us (for 3 years), started writing descriptions and pasting them on both websites, instead of making them unique to each website. I trusted her for years, but I think she just got lazy. She quit about a month before the migration as well. We are currently working on this, but its been taking awhile because we have over 5,000 products on each site and have no idea which ones are duplicates. I did also notice: Site very slow when checking site speed tools. Working on that this week. When I take snippets of text or do searches, many times it shows up in omitted results. No messages in Google Webmaster Tools So the question is... Do you think it is the duplicate content issues that caused the drop? Our other site is Best Price Nutrition, which didn't see a big drop at all during that update. If not, any other ideas why?

Ranking Above sub-domains
So I work for a company that has a very successful affiliate that operates under a third level domain name such as "region.company.com". Their SEO practices are very good and they rank highly in keyword searches. However "company.com" does not even though it is not a subdomain. Even after optimizing the company.com's pages etc, the regional sub domain ranks much higher for keywords and the main company fails to rank at all. Is Google discounting the main company's page? Is it a matter of trust or time? or is it something else? How can I get Google to prioritize the main company website rather than a lower level domain affiliate?

Need help with huge spike in duplicate content and page title errors.
Hi Mozzers, I come asking for help. I've had a client who's reported a staggering increase in errors of over 18,000! The errors include duplicate content and page titles. I think I've found the culprit and it's the News & Events calender on the following page: http://www.newmanshs.wa.edu.au/news-events/events/07-2013 Essentially each day of the week is an individual link, and events stretching over a few days get reported as duplicate content. Do you have any ideas how to fix this issue? Any help is much appreciated. Cheers

Help Needed With .htaccess RewriteRule
Hello Fellow Mozzers, I would really appreciate a little help as I have been banging my head against a wall for the last few hours trying to create a .htaccess RewriteRule. My site has multiple H1's, one in the logo image and one as a header. Is there any official stance from the search engines on this?
In doing some research on this issue, I came across this blog post which seems to suggest it certainly will be a trigger to search engines. http://www.seounique.com/blog/multiple-h1-tags-triggers-google-penalty/ Could be a false positive on his specific case, but I was wondering what the community thought. Thanks in advance!

My ranking spiked then died in the butt? why? Please help!
Hi guys, I have been persevering with this ranking for some time now and thought you might be able to help. Or direct me to where I can get help. I am learning a lot through SEOmoz but I am still very green. Basically on the 20th of the 12th we jumped up to a 2nd place listing and then dropped back down on the 17th of the 1st 2011. The site is http://mlb.broomeaccommodation.com.au and the search term is 'Broome Accommodation' as you can see it is a considerable drop and really affecting our bookings and sales figures. I have attached a link to a screen capture of the problem - http://exitforward.com/kimberleyaccomm/seomoz.png Interested to hear your thoughts and get some help on this frustrating matter Kind regards Bodie Czeladka
