Correct URL Parameters for GWT?
-
Hi,
I am just double checking to see if these parameters are ok - I have added an attachment to this post.
We are using an e-commerce store and dealing with faceted navigation so I excluded a lot of parameters from being crawled as I didnt want them indexed. (they got indexed anyway!).
Advice and recommendations on the use of GWT would be very helpful - please check my screenshot.
thanks,

Hello BJS,
The parameters look OK. Keep in mind that adjusting parameter handling in GWT is more of a band-aid than a cure. There are lots of other ways to handle faceted navigation, including rel canonical, robots meta tags, robots.txt and others. Read this article if you haven't already:
http://moz.com/blog/building-faceted-navigation-that-doesnt-suck
And here's a Whiteboard Friday on the topic: "http://moz.com/blog/whiteboard-friday-faceted-navigation
Keep a close eye on rankings once you've implemented those parameter handling rules. Be sure to annotate your analytics account with the date on which this was done for possible future diagnostics. See: http://www.google.com/analytics/features/annotations.html

Seems that your putting all sorts of work into an issue, and trying to solve it a way that is the most difficult, and still not getting the results you want, which leads you to do even more work.
Try breaking the issue down into several categories: "Do not index", "Please index", and "Group these together"
Now in you Robots.TXT file use the syntax "DISALLOW: \high-level-path" which tells the google bot not to index ALL the pages in you site that have "\high-level-path" an any other additional lower domain structure in their url. So if you were to use DISALLOW: \mydomaine.com, Google will ignore your entire domain.
second issue instead of trying to include all the "Rules" in GWT it would probably be simpler to include all the URL you definitely want indexed in your "Sitemap.xml" file. The free program " Soft Plus Gsite crawler" will automatically build this file for you.
Lastly: The Canonical tag is an easy way to tell Google which pages are similar, like your "Page" parameter

Url title and then category vice versa
We have recently developed a site with the structure of domain.com/page-title/about/category Instead of the traditional domain.com/category/page-title We want to optimize more on each single article rather than the category its in. However now we get the info from a seo company that this is rather a bad idea and it hurts the SEO performance because google doesnt understand the structure. The archive page of each category is domain.com/category/overview Whats your input on this?

Where is the best location for my primary keyword in my URL?
http://moz.com/learn/seo/url says: http://www.example.com/category-keyword/subcategory-keyword/primary-keyword.html However I am wondering about structuring things this a little backwards from that: http://www.example.com/primary-keyword/ (this would be an introduction and overview of the topic described by the primary keyword)
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | TheEspresseo
http://www.example.com/primary-keyword/secondary/ (this would be a category landing page with snippets from articles within the niche described by the secondary keyword, which is itself a niche of the primary keyword)
http://www.example.com/primary-keyword/secondary/article-title/ (in-depth article on a topic within the scope of the secondary, which is within the scope of the primary) Where http://www.example.com/primary-keyword/ is the most important page targeting the most important URL. Thoughts?0 -
Double hyphen in URL - bad?
Instead of a URL such as domain.com/double-dash/ programming wants to use domain.com/double--dash/ for some reason that makes things easier for them. Would a double dash in the URL have a negative effect on the page ranking?

I know this can be a major issue and could lead to tons of errors. What is everyone's thought of doing such a huge Migration, Should I do it all in phases? or should I do them all at once so they can all be indexed together? What would you suggest to be the best way to go about doing such a massive migration?

GWT URL Removal Tool Risky to Use for Duplicate Pages?
I was planning to remove lots of URL's via GWT that are highly duplicate alike pages (similar pages exist on other websites across the web). However, this Google article had me a bit concerned: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1269119?hl=en I already have "noindex, follow" on the pages I want to remove from the index, but Google seems to take ages to remove pages from index, which appear to drag down unique content pages from my site.

Is this a Correct Time to Use 302 Redirects?
Hi Mozzers! We are going through a rebranding process, and as of this morning we have 3 domains, all with identical content. For example (not real domain names): www.fantastic.com
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Travis-W
www.fantasticfireworks.com
www.fireworks.com We are using 3 domains to ease the rebranding transition. We currently only want people to visit 'www.fantastic.com,' and if they visit the other 2 domains we want them redirected. Since we will be using these other domains eventually, should we use 302 redirects instead of 301s? The other domains are new and do not have any domain authority or sites linking in, so we do not need to worry about link juice. Does it really matter what type of redirect we use? Thanks!0
