For an e-commerce page with more than 2,000 products, how should I conduct my initial keyword research?

Hi all,
A confused and frustrated SEO noob needing a little guidance here
I'm a bit lost on how I should conduct my keyword research for a start-up e-commerce site selling dietary supplements (~200 brands and ~2000 SKU's).
From my understanding, there are two different types of pages I have to optimize for other than the Homepage & CMS pages: Category pages and product pages.
As part of the fundamental on-page optimization, I'm planning to write unique category/product descriptions for better visibility (as well as to avoid duplicate content issues) on SE. Consequently, this process has prompted several questions related to my keyword research.
My questions are:
- How would I determine which keywords to optimize for?
- How many keywords should I target per product page? per category page?
- Should I include product / brand name as keywords?
The site isn't live yet, but is set to launch in mid-August. Any ideas on how I can conduct my keyword research to be used for category/product level pages?

Determining What Keywords
1. Create List - Create a long list of as many keywords as you can come up with for each category or product. Throw in everything you can think of - and use www.ubersuggest.org and Google Keywords tool. Use two columns in a spreadsheet. One for the keyword, and the second to label the category or product.
2. Gather Metrics - Then we're going to add the most "bare bones" metrics. Grab exact match search volume for each keyword from AdWords keyword tool. Run rankings on the site for each keyword (although your site is not launched, so you probably don't have rankings ). You can also pull maybe CPC (to get an idea of how commercial a keyword is) or Moz Difficulty for an idea of competitiveness. Add your metrics to new columns as you go.
3. Analyze & Choose keywords - Using sorting and/or filters. Look at keywords for one product or category at a time. Basically, you want to choose keywords with a good amount of search volume that you think you could rank for, and they're relevant. You could create a column to tage keywords you're going to use.
How Many To Target
You should really target one, and it's variations. For example - if it's turmeric supplements you'd target "supplements made with turmeric" "turmeric health supplements" etc.
Follow one of my favorite SEO flowcharts of all time (made by Rand) to decide if you should split words into separate pages.
Product / Brand Name
I assume you are selling 3rd party products? Abso-heck-lutely include the brand and product name. People are gonna be searching on those brand and product names. These are very transaction / intent-to-purchase searches - and if you can serve up a result that's compelling enough to get the click, there's a high chance you'll get the purchase.

In my ecommerce site I work by top level category and make a list of what has the best margin, cross reference that with what is high value and is easily posted and that usually narrows it down. Then I work down through the cats and use the same principle all the way down. I try to hog for brand names in top level and work down to specific products as I get deeper into the Patricia assuming you already use the keyword tool and trends etc.

1. I would recommend you to optimize the name and purpose of your product as keywords on each product page.
2. Don't stuff too many keywords on the same page. Optimizing 2-3 main keywords on each page is the optimal.
3. I suggest you to create separate pages on your ecommerce for brands, especially if you are going to have 200 brands as you said, and there you can include your product's brand name as keyword.

First off I would ask the client what products they have the highest margins for and also which are their best sellers. Â Then ask your client which other products they would like to sell more of right away (ask them to prioritize). Â Take those lists and go from there.

Coworker and I see totally different keyword volumes on same paid keyword planner account
My coworker and I are both connected to the same company's paid keyword planner account but are using our own individual google accounts to log in. When I look up the keyword "joint bank account" I get a search volume of 9,900, while she gets a search volume of 2,900. Does anyone know why this might be? Do we know which might be more accurate? This doesn't seem to be connected to Google lumping semantic variations together. I've seen it happen way before that update. It's hindering our headline pitching since the volume she sees does not meet our minimum search threshold. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Laira

Google Adword Keyword Planner
Previously I always utilsed the Google Adword Keyword Tool to provide traffic estimations in order to assist with my keyword research. I have recently revised these levels of traffic using the new Keyword Planner. Local Traffic results are approximately have fallen approximately 85%, I have anaylsed this over approximately 50 results. I am aware that the new Keyword Planner does not have a local traffic column anymore so I have utilised the location filter. I have the same problem in all my campaigns, in two different countries, please can someone advise why this is and how I can collect accurate keyword data. Kind regards

What's your keyword research system?
What is your process for keyword research? I used Google's Keyword Research Tool for the bulk of my research in the past, so I'm pretty lost right now. However, I'm on the ground level of developing a content strategy for my company's website refresh, and this is a great chance to start from scratch with a sound process. The goal, of course, would be not to respond to keywords, but rather, letting holistic keyword research guide our content strategy. But obviously, I still want to grab low-hanging fruit where I can and beef up weaker parts of the site where possible. After reading Ruth Burr's excellent post last week, I'm testing a few tools, and so far am leaning toward Wordtracker for volume/competition data, cross-referenced with Moz's ranking reporting. However, I still need to check out SEMRush and get friendlier with Keyword Planner. I just want a little SEO angel to fall out of the sky and give me a recipe to follow. No? In case someone asks, my current goal is to identify our target audience's search habits to better reach them through content on our company website. While we serve several communities and do plan to geotarget, we're not there yet. So while I'm glad we have that option on Keyword Planner, there's not much I can do with it today.

How can I easily track multiple keywords for multiple pages?
We are creating landing pages to target keywords, and would like to be able to have something set up so at a glance we can see each page's rank for its targeted keyword. For example, if we have pages with the URLs of example.com/sites/purple-widgets, example.com/sites/purple-widgets-for-cheap, example.com/sites/cheap-purple-widgets, etc., we'd like to see the rank of each of those pages for their respective keyword ("purple widgets", "purple widget for cheap", "cheap purple widgets", etc.). Any suggestions?

How reliable is GWT's keyword data & what is the most accurate way of determining keywords you currently rank for?
I have been monitoring the query data (keywords, average position, CTR, etc.) in GWT, but sometimes the ranking data seems off. I filter the dates for the past week, so it is the most recent. I manually check some of the rankings and they are way off. Does anyone have feedback on this? If you have access to multiple domain data, that would be great. What is the most accurate way of determining keywords you currently rank for? I have also used keywordspy, and that is off too!

To Meta Keyword or Not To Meta Keyword, That Is The Question
I can't seem to get a reliable answer on this one. It seems to be split down the middle as far as who agrees and who doesn't, of course some of that content is outdated. So, for today, should I be using the meta keywords tag or not? Thanks, Steven

Question about keyword
I had read a post in SEOmoz about keywords. According to it, The best keywords are 1. High Volume (many searches/month) 2. Low Competition 3. High Value (large % of visitors convert) My question is how can i find about 2nd and 3rd point. High search volume is shown in many Tools including Google adwords, but how can we be sure to find keywords that are low in competition and at the same time high value.
